Could you please just make it stranger? Stranger. Odder. Could be weirder. More bizarre. How about uncanny?

Gary Bettman announced that the NHL players are locked out and the Collective Bargaining Agreement expired between the NHL and the NHLPA.

Enough is enough.

Did you realize there was an NHLFA - NHL Fan Association? I didn't until the other day. Here's why I'm writing... it's totally free to join, so I wanted to give you the opportunity to do so.

Why? Because, long story short, the League Commissioner recognizes the association, but will not consider it a real representation of the NHL fans until they nearly triple their numbers. Presently they have over 22,000 members but need 75,000 for Bettman to HEAR the fans.

Honestly, I wish all the sports would get together and talk about length of season etc. If baseball, hockey, and basketball could organize things so that there's only 2-3 sports going on at a time, things might be more profitable. Oh well, i know league organizers want every buck they can get

My 11 mo. old loves to watch hockey. I'm sad he can't watch the Stars, disappointing as they were last season. I guess we'll have to watch some "classic ESPN" hockey.

Yeah, gotta wait LONGER for the Rangers to stink this year...LOL! But if Bettman is willing to acknowledge a NHLFA then we have to get the numbers there first and THEN we can bend his ear.

Never underestimate the power of several thousand angry fans...lucky for him we are hockey fans and not soccer hooligans.

True, but its kinda the whole symbiosis thing. Bettman sets up for the owners & NHLPA who in turn set up for him who in turn sets up for them... We need another face in the circle and it's easier to get our voice "into the loop" by approaching Bettman than it is to approach EVERY owner and the NHLPA.

Gotta start somewhere, and if that means we begin with the shortest stick in this craphill 'verse *grin* I guess we take it.

Greed of ownership has alway been an inherent weakness of all major league team sports. It can
be a good thing, like Steinbrenner and the Yankees (yeah, I hate 'em too, so don't start!) because he wants to get all the talent he can in order to win and keeps a good team on the field. On the other hand, it can be a bad thing, like the Expos, who always would ship off any good talent before they had to pay too much for them, thus giving up many MANY opportunities to win titles. Or, like closer to home here in Cincinnati, the Reds owner doesn't care so long as he doesn't lose money (The Reds suck, but so long as his checkbook isn't in the red, he won't bother to get good pitching, a leadoff hitter, a third baseman...). The problem is, you find more of the latter greed than the former, and everyone can hate the Yankees, but you know what?...if every owner had GS's drive to win, he *couldn't* get all the talent and the "playing field" would level itself out. Salary caps are nice because they force ownership to police themselves, but it does nothing for the owners who won't pay the money in the first place. But like I said earlier, we just got to start somewhere.

Just my take on it all. :) Keep it real and keep flyin'!

Oh, I think that was a shiny game. Finns put up a decent fight and that was all I was hoping for. It was nice enough we got to play in the final game in the first place. To tell the truth I don’t think I would have stayed up in the wee hours of the morning if somewhere in the back of my mind a little voice hadn’t said “maybe, just maybe”

. But a good game, Canada, congrats and sing away. Hopefully things turn out differently next time (if Finland manages to get to the finals ever again).

I joined that NHLFA thingy, btw, just to help out. For the past ten years or so I've woken up in those wee hours of the morning to watch the Stanley Cup finals (and few other games as well). It's going to be disappointing if there won’t be a chance to do that next summer. And not to see NHL players in the next Olympics would suck too.
