University of New Mexico students learn the world won’t end if they say no to Gay activist’s demands

By Emma Karlen, staff writer
So much of what is taught on today’s college campuses is useless “feel good” drivel. It is very often nothing more than pap designed to “build self-esteem.”

Nevertheless, occasionally a genuine lesson will bubble up through the worthless sludge. This is what happened recently at the University of New Mexico (UNM). While the lesson was unintended, it was clear and for a change valuable. Students learned that they do not have to automatically yield to minority opinion and if they tell demanding Gay activists to get lost the world will not come to an end. Here’s how it unfolded.

A group of “frightened” Gay activists on the campus of the University of New Mexico recently got a big surprise when they demanded that Chick-Fil-A be forced to leave, because its mere presence frightened them. Undeterred that a majority of fellow students favored keeping the chicken sandwich shop right where it is, the Gay agitators demanded and got a vote on the matter from the student Senate.

During the debate the hand wringing was classic. Sen. Miquela Ortiz of the Associated Students of UNM said, “Students started expressing to me they felt unsafe to go into their own campus union building. When they said they felt uncomfortable on campus, I felt it was an issue that I should bring up.”

Another said, “Please look at this from a moral standpoint. Look at the kids that are here that are telling you, ‘I do not feel safe on this campus anymore.’”
As it turns out the students living on the UNM’s campuses do have many reasons to be fearful, but deep fried chicken sold by a Christian company isn’t one of them. In the last three reporting years these real crimes have been reported by UNM residents: 10 forcible sex crimes; 15 robberies; 145 burglaries; 20 aggravated assaults; 137 auto larcenies and 15 arsons.

The Gay bleating drew responses such as, “Nobody is in imminent danger on this campus because of chicken,” and, “I have friends that work for Chick-fil-A, and they’re taught to treat every customer with the respect that they deserve.”
The vote was 8 to 3 in favor of the chicken restaurant and at least for one day students went back to their dorms having actually learned something: Don’t be afraid of bullies; Gay or otherwise

Until you and your "kind" are hated and hunted, it is difficult to understand the pervasive fear you live in constantly.

They do not fear a fried chicken restaurant. They fear another institutional endorsement of their aberration and deviancy.

It would be like Jews fearing a chicken restaurant whose owners have a explicit endorsement of Jews being responsible for the demise of the world.

... how was this bullying? They had a friggin' dialogue on the matter and preference for chicken over rejecting the restaurant's politics won out.

That's not bullying. That's the opposite of bullying.

Emma Karlen needs to get a dictionary and spend a bit of her time reading it.

Only it's nothing like that, in the least.

This myth that Cathy hates gays, and bans them from his stores, or gives them poor service, discriminates against them , has been debunked, whole sale.

There's no issue here, save for the phony one a few agitators, speaking on behalf a the entire gay population ( who elected THEM ? ) have tried to make, out of thin air.

Bullying.

Read the ENTIRE paragraph

" they demanded that Chick-Fil-A be forced to leave, because its mere presence frightened them. Undeterred that a majority of fellow students favored keeping the chicken sandwich shop right where it is, the Gay agitators demanded and got a vote on the matter from the student Senate. "

They DEMANDED CFA be forced to leave.

Then they DEMANDED a vote.

The result, by the student senate, was a resounding defeat for them, and a deserving bitch slap at their intimidation tactics.

That's not intimidation!

They wanted something, went to the appropriate place to address it, were rejected in their proposal. End of story.

Intimidation is something entirely else. Intimidation doesn't use a representative body to make decisions based on majority preference and then accepts the result.

This is a big non-story.

They didn't raise concerns, and ask that their grievances be addressed.

No. they first DEMANDED that their desires be met, out of hand, and CFA be closed and forced to move.

Who the fuck do they think they are ? To demand a legitimate business, doing absolutely nothing wrong, not posing any hazard to anyone, in the least, be forced to close its doors and leave ??

And Mal4Prez - you're an idiot.

It's still not bullying or intimidation.

If anyone here stood up and demanded that a certain user be banned - and nothing happens - and then they hold a vote and see their idea roundly rejected and then have to deal with that.. it would also not be bullying or intimidation.

Bullying or intimidation are simply something entirely else.

You can think that this was a stupid and arrogant move. That's a legitimate reaction. Doesn't make what they did bullying or intimidation. It simply makes it a process within the student body. It took place. It is over. There is no need to frame it as something other than what it is.

They tried to use a phony, trumped up claim that merely because CFA was there on campus, at the student union building, they ( the gays ) felt frightened.

There's no history of CFA violating anyone's rights, discriminating gays for being gay, or any such nonsense, and yet this " activist " group figured that if they merely raised the issue that they were scared ( OMG! We can't have THAT ! ) then the school would be forced to wilt and give in.

It's similar to the arm twisting that Jessie Jackson's Rainbow Coalition uses to pressure big companies into giving 'donations' to his organization, under the threat of public intimidation and picketing. Not exactly to that level, but in the same category.

Politics and social issues aside, CFA is ridiculously overrated in my opinion. I mean what is it...a little piece of rubbery chicken on a crummy bun. I've eaten there a few times and was not very satisfied. Best chicken sandwich from a fast-food place is Boston Market.

I was gonna make a similar reply over in the " Obama's a Commie" thread, but you said it better than I could.
The dictionary these people , including Rap, use doesn't match the one I use. And they never let go-- Michelle Obama's not proud of the country quote was, what, 5 or 6 years ago. It's still being taken out of context, treated as literal truth, not the hyperbole it was. As to being a Leninist, there isn't much evidence of that. And while they can dismiss the Chick-Fil-A guy's argument as being long since disproven, they won't extend the same courtesy to anybody who disagrees with them, just keep bringing the same stuff up again and again.

Her comment was NOT taken " out of context ". That's the biggest load of crap that so often gets used by folks who say things they really mean, but then realize they stepped in it up to their waist, so they then try to back track and act as if nothing was there in the first place. It was just a little over 4 years ago, not '5 or 6', right after he won the Dem Party nomination.

Who was it that tried to get, no DEMANDED that CFA be removed from a campus student union ?

Exactly who are you talking about, when you say " them " ? Who is it that keeps bringing this stuff up again and again ?

I wonder where Rap dug up that particularly pathetic piece of drivel? Couldn't be "godlike productions", could it? They gave it BIG play: http://www.godlikeproductions.com/forum1/message2178897/pg1 ...Oh, wait, no, of course, it was Conservative News Central, naturally, silly of me... http://www.conservativenewscentral.com/top-conservative-blogs/

Notice he "forgot" to provide a link, because of course once anyone read that piece of tripe, they'd want to know what kind of idiot wrote it, then they'd go to the link, go "oh, I see" and pay no further attention.

Of course, he COULD have quoted it from any of the myriad OTHER right-wing sources who put it up to hide that, but well, you know.

That is the silliest piece of idiocy I've seen yet today, Rap. But then, it's early, and it's Sunday...

Niki -

It's only tripe when you disagree with it. Got it.

I didn't offer up a link, as none was offered from where I read it. The authors name though, was provided.

So, which part specifically did you object? That there's even a CFA on campus ? Or that there even are any gays there ? Or was it the part where they DEMANDED that CFA be tossed off campus ?

If the story is factually in error, please... enlighten us.

Feb 2008, huh ? Wow. Thats SOOO much earlier than I thought it was, summer of '08.

I guess Michelle was hating America for longer than I had given her credit. Shocking.

And what you do with YOUR fingers, and where YOU stick them isn't really my business.

It's clear you and I use them for different things.

I'm actually enjoying some tasty baked Cheetos, so yeah... I will lick my fingers and enjoy !

No, really, look at what you are supporting. You are calling protest and in the end democratic processes ie voting, 'bullying' behaviour. You don't think that the students had any right to request the removal of whatever that dreadful food place is...

If they were protesting about a Mosque, would you call it 'bullying' behaviour, or is that just how we define what we don't agree with these days.

There was no " protest ", there was simply a demand that CFA be banned, and then a demand that their grievances be voted on by the SGA. Which happened, and they were soundly defeated.

Why is this place 'dreadful '? Have you ever been to one ? ? Do you have ANY gorram clue of what you're speaking, or are you just a knee jerk reactionary ?

Every CFA I've been to is friendly, clean and usually quite busy. Were it that most other fast food places were so "dreadful ".

Why can't they just shut up and get back in their closet. Or better still send them to a camp to be fixed, and if that doesn't fix them of their godhating pansy ways, then FIX them properly.

I'm outraged that ANYONE dare protest against a fast food business. Fucking commies.
