Jim Carrey's "Cold Dead Hand" causes a furor

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...
Quote:Jim Carrey's video mocking the late actor and National Rifle Association President Charlton Heston didn't please some conservatives - not that Carrey himself minds. The video, a spoof version of the old comedy show "Hee Haw," featured Carrey playing both Heston and the leader of a country-western group, mocking Heston's declaration that gun control advocates would have to pry his firearms "from my cold, dead hands" Conservative pundits claimed Carrey was inappropriately denigrating Heston, who died in 2008. Taking particular aim at, presumably, Fox News - the spelling below is his - Carrey responded to the critics Friday. "In my opinion Fux News is a last resort for kinda-sorta-almost-journalists whose options have been severely limited by their extreme and intolerant views; a media colostomy bag that has begun to burst at the seams and should be emptied before it becomes a public health issue," Carrey wrote in a statement. "I sincerely believe that in time, good people will lose patience with the petty and poisonous behavior of these bullies and Fux News will be remembered as nothing more than a giant culture fart that no amount of Garlique could cure," he continued. Heston, who died in 2008, rose to fame as an actor in movies like "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben-Hur." Later in life, however, he turned his attention to political advocacy, eventually becoming the president of the National Rifle Association from 1998-2003.

Quote:We know him as Ace Ventura and the Grinch, among many other memorable comedic roles, but on Friday, Jim Carrey delivered what should be considered his finest line and he did it in a statement responding to a viscous attack by Fox News. After being attacked by Fox News’ Greg Gutfeld for a Funny or Die anti-NRA video in which Carrey mocked Charlton Heston, the Canadian actor released a statement in which he refers to Fox as a “media colostomy bag” full of “kinda-sorta-almost journalists” who have become a “giant culture fart” in society. Here’s the full press release via Hollywood Reporter:Quote:“Since I released my “Cold Dead Hand” video on Funny or Die this week, I have watched Fux News rant, rave, bare its fangs and viciously slander me because of my stand against large magazines and assault rifles. I would take them to task legally if I felt they were worth my time or that anyone with a brain in their head could actually fall for such irresponsible buffoonery. That would gain them far too much attention which is all they really care about. “I’ll just say this: in my opinion Fux (sic) News is a last resort for kinda-sorta-almost-journalists whose options have been severely limited by their extreme and intolerant views; a media colostomy bag that has begun to burst at the seams and should be emptied before it becomes a public health issue. “I sincerely believe that in time, good people will lose patience with the petty and poisonous behavior of these bullies and Fux (sic) News will be remembered as nothing more than a giant culture fart that no amount of Garlique could cure. “I wish them all the luck that accompanies such malevolence.”Isn’t that epic? In the war between Hollywood and Fox News, yet another battle has been won by the left coast. Fox News involved themselves in a fight it couldn’t possibly win. One should never criticize a comedian and hope to get away with it unscathed. But Jim Carrey did more than just hit back; he humiliated Fox News in a way no other media network has ever experienced. I’m sure this statement will have Fox throwing hissy fits for days and that, my friends, is Oscar-worthy.

Quote:Some folks ride like the wind, with the whispering pines to guide them, and the burning light inside them keeps them warm in the snow. Others fear, the sounds they hear, make banditos out of molehills, fill their hearts with porcupine quills. They're dead and buried long before they go. Charleton Heston movies are no longer in demand, And his immortal soul may lay forever in the sand. The angels wouldn't take him up to heaven like he planned, 'cuz they couldn't pry that gun from his cold, dead hand. It takes a cold, dead hand to decide to pull the trigger. Takes a cold, dead heart, and as near as I can figger, With your cold, dead aim, you're tryin' to prove your dick is bigger. But we know, your chariot may not be swingin' low... Cold dead hand, cold dead hand, cold dead hand, cold dead hand, You're a big, big man with a little bitty gland. So you need something bigger just to fill... your cold, dead hand. Imagine if, the Lord were here, and he knew what you've been thinkin'. Would His sacred heart be sinkin' into the canyon of dismay. And on the ones who sell the guns He's sic the vultures and coyotes. Only the devil's true devotees could profiteer from pain and fear. Charleton Heston movies are no longer in demand. And his immortal soul may lay forever in the sand. So you need something bigger with a hairpin trigger. You don't wanna get caught with your trousers down when the psycho killer comes around. So you make your home like a thunder dome, where you're always packin' wherever you roam. But the psychos win no matter what you do, 'cuz they're gonna buy way more guns than you. And while you're ___ on the bed they put five rounds in the back of your head. Or you get depressed 'cuz the money runs out, and you put your old shotgun in your mouth. And your kids walk in and they find you there like a headless ___ in your underwear, And they move the gun and it kills them too. And your wife just doesn't know what to do, so she takes a hand grenade from her shoe, and she pulls the pin, and it's all on you and your cold, dead hand.
Quote:Jim Carrey has divided fans when it comes to gun control. The star has made his opinion known and gotten into a serious tangle with FOX news about his perception of the issues. Whatever side the fans choose, the star seems to appreciate the spotlight as it keeps the issue of guns in the news. On Sunday the entertainer shared a special message with Twitter followers who have supported him over the past few days. “Wow. I shined a light on the hate and now my twitter stream is nothin' but love. I appreciate your support, so much! #Spankyoukindly,” tweeted Jim Carrey from his official Twitter account on Sunday. The star had reposted some pretty intense messages over the last couple of days from other Twitter users who definitely aren't supporting his stance on gun control. Being a celebrity and having an opinion on a very social issue makes Jim Carrey an easy target. Most of the people who dislike Carrey’s opinion on gun control take personal swipes about his performances in the movies. And others are referencing his previous movie titles in derogatory terms to make it look like the star is like the characters he once played. Jim Carrey has really stepped up to push the discussion of gun control. Not willing to let the haters change his mind, it appears those who support him are helping the star get out the message.

Quote:Jim Carrey has been taking major heat from Fox News commentators and other conservatives since his anti-gun music video “Cold Dead Hand” first premiered on Funny Or Die last week. In the days since the video debuted, Carrey has used his Twitter account to defend his motives and retweet messages from supporters. He released a short statement specifically addressing his complaints against “Fux News.” And now, in a blog entry on The Huffington Post, he is tackling the larger issues brought up by the video and confronting his critics head-on. Carrey’s post, titled “I Never Wanted to Take Your Guns Away,” does not address his fiercest critics by name, but it clearly tries to address some of their concerns. On the accusation that as a Canadian he should not be meddling in American politics, Carrey writes:Quote:I disagree wholeheartedly with those who say that there are just too many guns out there to control and that more gun laws won't make a difference. Change must start someplace. I'm pretty sure that no worthwhile endeavor has ever been accomplished without a beginning and reducing gun violence in America is a worthwhile endeavor. These mass shootings and daily body counts on your local news are terrible tragedies. The utter devastation that must be endured by the victims' families is unfathomable. These horrific events are also an invitation for us to become more civilized and to deal with our addiction and entitlement to violence. Not to shut our eyes and ears and scream at those with a different opinion than ours to "fuck off and go back to Canada." I will gladly go back and visit Canada as I have many friends and loved ones there. I am so proud of that country and everything it's given to me, but I am also a naturalized American citizen and I have been bringing as much joy as I can to people in this country for 30 years. I care deeply about our future and I feel it's my duty as a citizen to do everything in my power to make this a better place. To those who call him a “hypocrite” for employing armed bodyguards, as Ann Coulter did on Hannity last week, Carrey writes: Quote:For those who say I'm a hypocrite because I have an armed bodyguard, lets make one thing clear: No one in my employ is allowed to carry a large magazine and NO ONE IS ASKING ANYONE TO GIVE UP THEIR RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS, though it is in the vested interests of those who profit by gun sales to make it seem so. It's just the type of arms, the easy access and the means with which to cause massive devastation to good and innocent people that I hope we can limit. It's the quality of mercy, the tiniest spark of empathy that I know lives in every one of us that I wish to ignite in you. And to the bullies who will try to marginalize and discredit me by saying, "Shut up, you're just an actor," while they brag about what a great president the ACTOR Ronald Reagan was, who threaten me with the demise of my acting career and much worse, I say SO BE IT! How shallow do they think I am? I would trade my money, my fame, my reputation and legacy if there were the slightest chance of preventing the anguish of another Columbine, Virginia Tech, Aurora, or Sandy Hook Elementary School. I ask you, truly, what manner of human being would not? I have been aghast at the level of hatred heaped upon me, my family and the people I work with over a mere difference of opinion on this issue. Perhaps my words were a bit harsh at the onset, but calling someone a "Motherfucker" is far different than wishing them to die. It is shocking to see this concerted effort to brutally intimidate anyone who speaks of a compassionate compromise. These thugs, though menacing, are a minority but they will have their way if good people don't step forward now and make a difference. Every American has the right to speak their mind. Every American has the right to bear arms. But it is up to every American to draw the line when it comes to the type of guns that are considered a reasonable means of self-defense. No one is allowed to own a bazooka. In a movie theater an assault rifle with a 100-round drum magazine can cause just as much damage. So don't just sit there and do nothing. Contact your representatives and let them know that their jobs depend upon change. It won't always be someone else's kids in the line of fire. The time is now. Quote:Rounding up his Hollywood friends, he and they went on "The Joey Bishop Show", which was ABC's late-night answer to NBC's Johnny Carson in the late 1960's. On this show that's probably no longer available to view (and unfortunate for the benefit of TV and American history), Heston, Kirk Douglas, Jimmy Stewart and Gregory Peck all appeared on the show together and told Bishop they were supporting the passing of the Gun Control Act that was up for vote in Congress that week. With a guest lineup like that, this show probably even beat out Carson in the ratings that night. Many of the Reps and Senators who would be voting for the bill were undoubtedly watching that night, too. Whether Hollywood truly was responsible for getting that sweeping gun law passed is up for debate. But it did pass overwhelmingly right after that TV appearance--obviously fueled by Kennedy's death by gunshots and seeing legendary actors getting unusually eloquent on the late-night TV circuit. It initially prevented mail-order and interstate gun sales and prevented anyone under 21 from being able to purchase a handgun. All of this, of course, was still law when Heston was head of the NRA and still is. ..... When he was elected as President of the NRA, more than a few interviews asked him point blank about his support of gun control in the 1960's. It was only the right thing to ask when he was so adamant in his NRA speeches against any sense of keeping guns from being available to those who wanted them to protect themselves. In a famous "60 Minutes" interview, Heston merely acknowledged that he made some mistakes in his political past...but didn't elaborate. But did Heston really think that getting the 1968 Gun Control Act passed was a mistake? Perhaps more evidence of feeling conflicted was in that notorious Michael Moore interview in "Bowling for Columbine" where Moore criticized Heston to his face for holding an NRA meeting in Colorado right after the Columbine High School shootings occurred. Without answering the question--Heston got up and walked out on the interview. He certainly had the right to walk out for being embarrassed on camera, though it seems he felt a sense of being between a rock and a hard place with that difficult question. Trying to answer such a question is really impossible when you are. Some have said that Heston tucked away some of his more left-sided gun beliefs so it wouldn't jeopardize his presidency with the NRA as I alluded to earlier. There were already some in the NRA who weren't too sure of him heading the organization--that is until he made some of those speeches in his deep, mellifluous voice that could pretty much shut anyone up for a while. ..... Heston may have had a moderate take on the whole issue, yet couldn't say it out loud for fear of alienating an organization that was too adamant in its right-wing beliefs. Maybe some people will think that's being a hypocrite. I look at it as being a true thinker who was cleverly able to take two sides of a major issue in his lifetime and bring on some good things in the process. More at http://voices.yahoo.com/charlton-heston-his-changes-philosophy-regarding-1357403.html?cat=9] So now we both know more about Charlton Heston, and I for one am more able to see him as a fuller person. To the world he is a symbol, and it was that symbol which Carrey was parodying, the symbol and the mentality it represents. Here is Charlton Heston, in his own words, from the June 18, 1968 Joey Bishop Show:Quote:TWO WEEKS AGO, ROBERT F. KENNEDY BECAME ONE OF THOUSANDS OF AMERICANS STRUCK DOWN BY AN ASSASSIN'S BULLET. SOMETIME TODAY, IN SOME CITY IN AMERICA, A GUN SHOT WILL RING OUT AND SOMEONE ELSE WILL FALL DEAD OR WOUNDED. Gotcha. By the way, where did you get "war hero"? He served for two years in the military, but there's no mention of any awards or anything...? And he was a liberal in favor of gun control during that time, so does that even count? Are you getting an idea of what I'm saying here?

"In my opinion Fux News is a last resort for kinda-sorta-almost-journalists whose options have been severely limited by their extreme and intolerant views; a media colostomy bag that has begun to burst at the seams and should be emptied before it becomes a public health issue," Carrey wrote in a statement. "I sincerely believe that in time, good people will lose patience with the petty and poisonous behavior of these bullies and Fux News will be remembered as nothing more than a giant culture fart that no amount of Garlique could cure," he continued. Heston, who died in 2008, rose to fame as an actor in movies like "The Ten Commandments" and "Ben-Hur." Later in life, however, he turned his attention to political advocacy, eventually becoming the president of the National Rifle Association from 1998-2003. http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/0433b30576/cold-dead-hand-with-jim-carrey Not all that funny, actually; Carrey us an acquired taste I sometimes have trouble acquiring, but I did love the Sam Elliot impression (adore that man!) and the point was well made...
