The nation's largest pro-gun lobby is set to prominently return to the debate over gun rights and restrictions this week when it unveils the conclusions of its school safety initiative in Washington on Tuesday.

The National Rifle Association first announced the National School Shield Program in December as its response to the Newtown, Connecticut, elementary school shooting a week earlier. It posted a bare-bones website and pledged to report back with a set of school safety proposals.

On Tuesday the NRA will announce its own findings and issue a report on how they believe schools can prevent future gun violence similar to the Newtown tragedy.

The National School Shield Program will present to lawmakers, law enforcement, school officials and the public a combination of policy proposals and resources to implement its recommendations, CNN has learned.

The NRA is expected to give Congress legislative proposals in the Tuesday report.

Law enforcement officials will find training recommendations to prepare the armed guards who the organization believes should be available to schools.

State and local officials will find guidelines on how to alter their ordinances to permit the armed guards.
.....
Funding such programs remains a key sticking point between the White House and the NRA, including how lawmakers would dole out the grant money to local schools.

The Tuesday announcement is expected to heat up the contentious debate between the two sides.

Given the many and myriad abuses by School Resource Officers (read: off duty cops) and how widespread THAT problem has become, I don't see this as working any better, eventually one more problem masquerading as a solution, IMHO.

The armed part is even stupider, as all one really needs is an alert individual with control of access points like doors and adding a weapon to the situation is overkill, not to mention once again that bullets are often slower to stop an active shooter than a taser which would lock them up and drop them all but instantly, so again we must ask the question of whether its more important to see the shooter killed or stopped ?

This is, I think, a case of when-all-you-have-is-a-hammer syndrome, right here.

saw this over on CNN.com

buried in the article is the NRA's recommendation that the armed school personnel have special training and pass background checks.

I love that- ya don't need a background check to buy a gun, but you do need one to be a school teacher.

Oh, well, it probably helps weed out the ( their POV ) commies, fags, and lib'ruls.

I note for the record that in Ohio you do need a background check to buy a gun and you ALSO need a background check to be a school teacher.

Not sure what your problem is here.

haven't been listening, have you? This is not about OHIO.

And you don't seem to remember the NRA's opposition to background checks on gun purchases.

Yup, a pundit mentioned it on CNN just a little while ago--the irony that the NRA's recommendations include background checks but they are fighting like MAD to keep background checks from passing in Congress. The irony shouldn't be lost on anyone.
