New Poll Shows Armed Rebellion Supported By 44% Of Republicans

(Poll at http://publicmind.fdu.edu/2013/guncontrol/]) This goes to show that the sensationalistic endorsement of fringe conspiracy theories that are driven forward in the name of freedom and small government by the conservative right are starting to take hold. The history of politics has shown us time and time again that the words that win vocabulary dominance can end up influencing or deciding which way public support goes — and the Republican side of things has proven itself to be quite effective of making use of fear as a motivator, especially through their propaganda wing, Fox News.

Republican Congressman Introduces Bill To Require Political Approval Of Scientific Papers

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) is preparing legislation that would disrupt peer review at the National Science Foundation (NSF). A draft of the bill—which is called the "High Quality Research Act" (HQRA)—leaked onto the web this week. It includes a new set of criteria for NSF projects.

The bill says that any research done using federal funds (which is the majority of research done in the United States) must have its results and finding approved by the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation of the Senate and the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology of the House of Representatives. If the findings are not agreed to, the research is taken from the researchers and disposed of by Congress as it sees fit. http://americanscience.blogspot.com/2013/04/the-high-quality-research-

Conservative Video Teaches Children Homosexuality Is Three Times As Dangerous As Smoking

“Being gay is three times more dangerous than smoking,” claims this video, created by Faith 2 Action, a fundamentalist Christian group that regularly engages in anti-choice and anti-gay fear campaigns under the typical conservative guise of being “pro-family.”

The video starts with a bizarre reading to children of two books that are obviously supposed to be parodies of Heather Has Two Mommies and Daddy’s Roommate, two children’s books that are pro-equality. The reading is bizarre because of the parody books; Heather has Two Cigarettes and Daddy’s Roommate has Lung Cancer, respectively. During the reading, Janet Porter of Faith 2 Action tries to compare cigarette smoking to homosexuality, saying, in fact, that they’re both health dangers and homosexuality is more dangerous. http://mscyprah.newsvine.com/_news/2013/05/03/18035928-conservative-vi

Note: Hours after posting this four and a half minute video, YouTube posted the message: “Your video has been removed as a violation of YouTube’s policy prohibiting hate speech.”

Faith2Action President Janet Porter issued the following statement to the Press: “YouTube’s censorship has made the point of the film we’re now producing–the homosexual movement seeks to silence all those who disagree,” stated Porter.

It's been re-posted without the comment she put up that got it banned: "If we wouldn’t indoctrinate children to smoke, WHY would we do it for something even MORE DANGEROUS?" So if you can stomach it, here it is:

‘Concerned’ Fox News Guest: Scientific ‘Enlightenment And Reason’ Led Directly To The Holocaust

Meet Penny Nance. She’s really concerned. How concerned? Well the Concerned Women for America CEO appeared on Fox & Friends this morning to decry the horrific fact that Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx would dare proclaim May 2nd as a “Day of Reason” in addition to the widely-recognized “Day of Prayer.”

“You know, G. K. Chesterton said that the Doctrine of Original Sin is the only one which we have 3,000 years of empirical evidence to back up. Clearly, we need faith as a component and it’s just silly for us to say otherwise,” she said. But she didn’t stop there. Clearly offended and disgusted by the notion that a governing official would have the audacity to recognize “reason” as a large factor in the improvement of humanity, she brought out the big guns, targeting straight for the origins of “reason” itself:
Quote:

“You know, the Age of Enlightenment and Reason gave way to moral relativism. And moral relativism is what led us all the way down the dark path to the Holocaust [...] Dark periods of history is what we arrive at when we leave God out of the equation.”

Keep in mind that her bafflingly narrow-minded view of history and demonization of “reason” ignores many key points:

1) The Enlightenment brought us what’s known as the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. Two things of which it’s not hard to imagine Nance is a “fan”? The Enlightenment inspired people like Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine to reject the supernatural aspects of religion in favor of a reconciliation of science with their faith in some sort of creator — something called “deism.” This was all part of a greater overall shift towards liberty, republicanism, and religious tolerance. Ugh, hate that stuff so much.

2) Scientific progress and the betterment of life for the millions of humans on earth was dependent on the curiosities that arose from the “Age of Reason.” Without that era of mankind, you likely wouldn’t have had things like the steam engine, electricity, modern medical procedures, life-saving vaccinations, etc.

3) All of that godless scientific progress liberated much of mankind from a life of squalor. And those effects are still being felt today. Before Enlightenment, the majority of mankind lived in filthy conditions that represented a flat-lined graph of health/prosperity for centuries beyond centuries. And then something magical happened: SCIENCE. To wit, compare the “wealth and health” of all nations in 1800 versus today:

Ugh, reason and science and stuff. Always leading to vast improvements in life expectancy and prosperity.

3) Literacy. The Age of Enlightenment and the curiosities it inspired led to a consumer demand for things called books — you know, those things that people read that often isn’t just The Bible. As a result of this new consumer demand, rapid expansions in book-printing technology led to astounding increases in something called literacy.

Throughout the developed world, millions of children began to read at an early age; newspapers, magazines, and books became widely available for the first time in history, leading to cultural developments and more open societies. To this day, the cycle continues: impoverished people’s lives are improved by technological devices which free them from hours of backbreaking labor and allow them time to invest in things like education and literacy. http://www.mediaite.com/tv/concerned-fox-news-guest-scientific-enlight

Again, only if you can stomach it:

My usual question is, how can any intelligent human being who ever considered themselves "conservative" not be totally embarrassed and ashamed of the insanity illustrated by their members on the extreme, as well as by how MANY examples show up daily??

So,

A full 1/3 of Americans are ready to fight a tyrannical government? Wish it were 90%. But we are getting there.

Much better than the 3% of the American revolution, no?

lol Niki, you and your kind are fading away (much too slowly in my opinion). Its not too late for you to repent.

Wulfie, did you even pass elementary math?? Less than half of America (42% as of January) identify as Republican. Less than half of THEM (44%) are in support of your little Rambo-for-simpletons fantasy.

That's less than 1/5 of America, dipshit.

The GOP is shrinking. The Tea Party is shrinking, and has become a joke to everyone not IN the party. Demographics are shifting drastically. Senators who voted against background checks are falling in the polls. I can go on.

It's your kind that's fading, kiddo (well, except hate groups and paranoid militias - they're growing a bit, and you fit in with them, no doubt). I know you live in a fantasy world.... but are you really THAT blind??

To everyone else: Quick, raise your hand if you're surprised Wulfie has trouble with basic math....

Betcha the Repubs are in favor of Armed Rebellion against the government RIGHT NOW, when it's run by Democrats; but, also, betcha that if the R's EVER get back in power, and anybody EVEN SUGGESTS non-violent Revolution or protest against THEM, they'd put the National Guard out on the streets with orders to shoot to kill. And that Wulf, et al, would be on the front lines cheering them on, if not volunteering to help out.
Don't think there's anybody , even around here, DUMB enough to actually put up money against me.

NewOld; nobody with half a brain would put money up against you (which of course still leaves those "at least two" which Mark mentioned), because of course you are absolutely right.

But I don't think Wulf would be right there volunteering; egging them on, certainly, and trying to take credit if he could find a way. But actually taking part? I highly doubt it; he's not into getting involved in the process to improve it LIKE SOME OF US, he's bigger on fantasy and pretend.

Couldn't keep my eyes from avoiding what Six wrote--does that make him one of the "two", Mark, since HE couldn't do the math either, or does that make three of them?

I can't resist:
Quote:

It is said that Republicans are too out of touch, too socially conservative on issues like right-to-life and gay rights. "When you look at the population growth," says GOP consultant Steve Schmidt, "the actual party is shrinking. It's becoming more white. It's becoming older."

Consider the Electoral College picture.

Of the seven mega-states, California, New York and Illinois appear lost to the GOP. Pennsylvania has not gone Republican since 1988. Ohio and Florida, both crucial, are now swing states. Whites have become a minority in Texas. When Texas goes, America goes.

This year could be the last hurrah. Excerpts from http://townhall.com/columnists/patbuchanan/2012/07/27/ in_the_long_run_is_the_gop_dead/page/full/

That was July 2012, and look how it turned out.
Quote:

Bush aide: 'GOP is shrinking daily before our eyes'

When center-left pundits are critical of Republican extremism, it's expected. When a former aide to George W. Bush and John McCain does it, the criticism resonates a little louder. In this case, it's Mark McKinnon, who wants "a new Republican Party."
Quote:

Increasingly, it is becoming clear that the party is against everything and for nothing.

Nothing on taxes. Nothing on gun control. Nothing on climate change. Nothing on gay marriage. Nothing on immigration reform (or an incremental, piece-by-piece approach, which will result in nothing). It's a very odd situation when the losing party is the party refusing to negotiate. It may be how you disrupt, but it is not how you govern, or how you ever hope to regain a majority.

And so, we have a Republican Party today willing to eliminate any prospect for a decent future for anyone, including itself, if it cannot be a future that is 100 percent in accordance with its core beliefs and principles. That's not governing. That's just lobbing hand grenades. If you're only standing on principle to appear taller, then you appear smaller. And the GOP is shrinking daily before our eyes.

From Thomas L. Friedman, three-time Pulitzer Prize winner:
Quote:

Send in the Clowns

WHEN thinking about the state of the Republican Party, I defer to a point that the Democratic consultant James Carville made the other day: “When I hear people talking about the troubled state of today’s Republican Party, it calls to mind something Lester Maddox said one time back when he was governor of Georgia. He said the problem with Georgia prisons was ‘the quality of the inmates.’ The problem with the Republican Party is the quality of the people who vote in their primaries and caucuses. Everybody says they need a better candidate, or they need a better message but — in my opinion — the Republicans have an inmate problem.” The political obsessions of the Republican base — from denying global warming to defending assault weapons to opposing any tax increases under any conditions, to resisting any immigration reform — are making it impossible to be a Republican moderate, said Carville. And without more Republican moderates, there is no way to strike the kind of centrist bargains that have been at the heart of American progress — that got us where we are and are essential for where we need to go.

Republican politicians today have a choice: either change your base by educating and leading G.O.P. voters back to the center-right from the far right, or start a new party that is more inclusive, focused on smaller but smarter government and market-based, fact-based solutions to our biggest problems.

But if Republicans continue to be led around by, and live in fear of, a base that denies global warming after Hurricane Sandy and refuses to ban assault weapons after Sandy Hook — a base that would rather see every American’s taxes rise rather than increase taxes on millionaires — the party has no future. It can’t win with a base that is at war with math, physics, human biology, economics and common-sense gun laws all at the same time.

Do you know how troubled this party is? Two weeks ago, the former G.O.P. Senate majority leader Bob Dole, a great American, went to the Senate floor in his wheelchair to show his support for Senate ratification of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of People With Disabilities. Nevertheless, the bill failed to win the two-thirds needed for ratification, because only eight Republicans dared to join Democrats in support of the treaty, which was negotiated and signed by George W. Bush! It essentially requires other countries to improve to our level of protection for the disabled, without requiring us to change any laws. It has already been ratified by 126 countries. But it failed in the Senate because Rick Santorum managed to convince the G.O.P. base that the treaty would threaten U.S. “sovereignty.” Santorum stopped just short of warning that space aliens would take over our country if we ratified the treaty.

Because they control the House, this radical Republican base is now holding us all back. President Obama was moving to the center in these budget negotiations. He reduced his demand for higher tax revenues to $1.2 trillion from $1.6 trillion; he upped the level at which Americans who would be hit with higher taxes to those earning $400,000 a year from $250,000; and he made his own base holler by offering to cut long-term spending by lowering the inflation adjustment index for Social Security. It seemed that with a little more Republican compromise, Obama would have met them in the middle, and we could have had a grand bargain that would put the country on a sounder fiscal trajectory and signal to the markets, the world and ourselves that we can still do big hard things together. That will have to wait. Now the best hope is some mini-, crisis-averting, Band-Aid.

The G.O.P. today needs its own D.L.C. The Democratic Leadership Council was founded by a group of Democratic governors and activists, led by Bill Clinton, in 1985 to lead the party back to the center from a failing leftward course that had resulted in it being repeatedly shut out of the presidency, except after Watergate. I asked Clinton’s pollster, Stan Greenberg, what Republicans could learn from the Clinton/D.L.C. experience.

“There is a lot of pain,” said Greenberg. “You can’t change the party without pain. You can’t just make some head-fakes to Hispanics.” The D.L.C., he noted, started by building an organization over 10 years and by running more centrist Democrats “in the primaries.” It didn’t just wait to pivot to the center in the general election. It fought for and educated the Democrat base in the primaries, by D.L.C. candidates running in support of free trade, Nafta and welfare reform. “With Clinton, we won the primaries in a way that defined us, so that he could run in the general election as the candidate of broad appeal.” That fractured the party and produced Ralph Nader, which cost Al Gore the 2000 election. But after losing that election, said Greenberg, the Democrats came together around a moderate-left core and did not engage “in dysfunctional primaries.”

Republicans need to go through a similar process of building new institutions and coalitions to support candidates who can move the party back to the center-right. Today, all their institutions, from think tanks to Fox TV, said Greenberg, “are reinforcing the trends that are marginalizing their party.”

Unfortunately, we don’t have a decade to wait for a G.O.P. D.L.C. Some leaders in that party need to stand up for sane compromises right now. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/23/opinion/sunday/friedman-send-in-the-
clowns.html?ref=opinion&_r=0

I think they covered it pretty well. Asshats like Rap and Wulf are what's destroying the Republican Party, and intelligent Republicans know it. Wulf lives in his own fantasy land, and obviously he and his ilk don't listen to the news, where REPUBLICANS themselves have been decrying their shrinking numbers. Which is fine; I sincerely hope they stay in their fantasy land until it's too late. The more they encourage the crazies, the faster it will happen.

My bad Mark... I see where your math comes in now.....

So... when I was all about overthrowing the government years before you started posting here, (well after Clinton was prez, and well before Obama thrust us further down the rabbit hole GWB created) what percentage of what demographic was I back then?

I still disagreed with 70% of the liberal talking points, but I was more concerned with all of the egregious raping of individual rights that were taking place at the time than who was killing their baby.

Hell... to this day, I support your right to kill your unborn baby. I support your right to bury the last known seed to your family linage deep within a male buttox.

I just have two favors to ask.....

The first is from our Government....... Stay the fuck out of our business.

The second is from our Baby-Killing, Prostate Massaging Liberal Front, or BKPMLF for short.... Don't ask, don't tell...

I don't think you realize Mark, that I hated GWB just as much as you hate me.

It's not my fault that his successor was a worse president for our country. It's his.

In the end, GWB is not only accountable for the 8 years of US destruction he watched over, but he's responsible for the 8 following years.

As bad a president as Obama is, I will never concede that he was our worst president.

He never would have gotten elected in the first place if GWB wasn't such a disgrace....

Good morning! Here's you'r daily dose of Crazy From the Right:

Bryan Fischer: "Sexual Selectivity Proves Being Gay A Choice"

Earlier this week, Bryan Fischer, from the American Family Associations, came out with a statement which says being selective in choosing partners proves that being gay is a choice.
Quote:

Jason Collins, a retread NBA center in the twilight of his career, burst out of the closet in spectacular fashion yesterday by declaring on Sports Illustrated that he is gay.

For this he has become an instant national hero to the deviancy cabal and their allies. President Obama gave him a personal phone call, and Michelle gave him a shout out, saying “We’ve got your back,” perhaps not the most felicitous turn of phrase under the circumstances.

He will now have his 15 minutes or more of fame, and likely grab lucrative endorsements to replace the NBA income he is about to lose.

One other significant, significant piece of this story is that Jason Collins is absolute proof that homosexuals aren’t “born that way,” despite the bloviations of that noted geneticist Lady Gaga.

Jason Collins has an identical twin, Jarron, who was “astounded” to discover that his brother had entered into the homosexual lifestyle. He, despite sharing Jason’s identical DNA, is as straight as a laser beam. Identical twins share traits that are genetically determined: height, skin color, eye color, hair color and so forth. If homosexuality is a genetically-caused sexual preference, Jarron Collins should be as gay as his brother. He’s not.

No one is “born gay.” And we have Jason Collins to thank for proving that to all of us. Excerpts from http://onenewsnow.com/afa-blogs/2013/04/30/jason-collins-proves-that-n

Republican Rep. Stella Tremblay Questions Legitimacy Of Boston Bombing Victim’s Loss Of Both Legs

In the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing last month, New Hampshire Republican state Rep. Stella Tremblay pushed a crazy conspiracy theory alleging that the federal government orchestrated the horrific attack that left three people dead and dozens injured. She made the claim in a post on Glenn Beck’s Facebook page.

That lunacy wasn’t enough for Tremblay, however. Despite being condemned by her own party and being called upon to resign by constituents, Tremblay appeared on a right-wing radio show this week and dared to question the legitimacy of a reaction to injuries suffered by a victim of the bombing. The Union Leader reports that Tremblay attacked Jeff Bauman, a victim who lost both of his legs in the tragic terrorist attack and heroically made an effort to talk to the FBI about the suspects despite his devastating injury.
Quote:

“My first gut reaction seeing the horror of that person that has their legs blown off,” Tremblay’s crazy theory began. “You know, the bone sticking out? He was not in shock. I looked and I thought, there’s something. … I don’t know what’s wrong, but it seems surreal to me. I talked to my sister, who’s not into politics at all, and she said, ‘Yes, I saw the same thing.’ He was not in shock. He was not in pain. If I had had those type of injuries, I’d be screaming in agony.”

Tremblay based her theory on a photograph of the carnage, and apparently it didn’t dawn on her that everyone reacts differently to pain, stress, and shock during traumatic events and that a picture represents only a snapshot, a fraction of a second in time.

Now Tremblay is facing even more backlash from constituents and the New Hampshire Republican Party.

State Republican Chair Jennifer Horn condemned Tremblay’s words, saying:
Quote:

“There is no place for a person who would make such insensitive and abhorrent statements in the Republican Party or in New Hampshire State government. She is unfit to serve in public office, and as a result she has been banned from receiving any support from the New Hampshire Republican State Committee.”

Of course, no active Republican has yet to call for Tremblay to resign, which drew a condemnation from the state Democratic Party, but former state GOP Chairmen are doing what active Republicans lack the courage to do.

According to the Union Leader, “Former state GOP Chair Steve Dupree posted on his Facebook page shortly after Tremblay’s remarks on Bauman that she is a, “nutcase,” and should resign immediately. “She is a disgrace to not only the Republican Party of New Hampshire but to all decent people,” Dupree said. Fergus Cullen, also a former state GOP chair, responded to Dupree’s Facebook post by saying, “Thanks for speaking publicly Steve. The crazies have been killing our brand and, until recently, too many GOP leaders in positions of responsibility were turning a deaf ear to it. This is a necessary first step toward re-earning trust from voters.”

Cullen is absolutely correct. Crazy conservatives have all but taken over the Republican in the last few years and if Republicans want to be seen positively be voters in future elections they’d be better off excommunicating the crazies from the party entirely and permanently. But that’s a decision for currently serving Republicans to make and if they are too cowardly to do so, the voters likely will not be so timid to do the responsible thing for them and not only punish nutty Republicans, but also the ones who refused to ouster insanity when they had the chance.

How WONDERFUL to see some INTELLIGENT Republicans speak up for a change!

On the other hand, hey, righties, there's another one of YOUR "representatives" at "work"!

Not to be confused in any way with "intelligence":
Quote:

Fox News gets story wrong about 'forced lesbian kiss' at middle school workshop

A story about an anti-bullying workshop at New York's Red Hook school district has been playing huge in religious right and conservative circles lately. The story, which not only includes the tale of a forced lesbian kiss between middle school girls at the workshop but also boys being told to carry condoms in their pockets, has been the talk of several conservative sites from Free Republic to The American Thinker to World Net Daily. The National Organization for Marriage referred to this story in three separate emails last week as an example of what will happen should marriage equality become legal across the country.

Not surprisingly, the story isn't necessarily true.

According to the school district, during the workshop at Linden Avenue Middle School, no female student was forced to engage in any lesbian kissing, male students were not told to carry condoms, and sexual activity between students was not condoned in any way.

Here is an interesting fact you do need to remember - this story gained steam when it was picked up by Fox News reporter Todd Starnes. While Starnes did cite the area newspaper, The Poughkeepsie Journal, in his post, he choose to add more lurid detail about the alleged lesbian kiss. Also, while The Journal talked about the entire workshop as a whole, Starnes chose to take the "they didn't even notify the parents" route, thereby playing up a semantical tone that the school was trying to "indoctrinate" students.

On Monday of last week, the district sent Starnes an email asking that he update his story with correct information. It is not known whether or not Starnes chose to update his story but now the school district has to deal with what it calls "hostile and hateful emails" from many who don't even live in the area. It puts the blame for this solely on Starnes and the organizations - such as NOM - who chose to repeat Starnes' "inaccurate" story. http://www.alternet.org/speakeasy/alvinmcewen/fox-news-gets-story-wron

How noble of him to come out when he's retired. At least, that's what I assume the article meant since it said "retread" in the first sentence.

I'm not huge on basketball today like I was in my late teens and early 20's but this guy never hit my radar. I can't blame a guy who would never have the income from a lucrative deal with Nike to bide his time. It's really hard to let go of that massive league minimum pay for any reason.

I hope he enjoys that fifteen minutes of fame he never got by being anything more than a below average NBA bench warmer.

I'd love to see the follow up to this story in 2017....

I wonder if Michelle will still take his calls when they've both been cast out of the limelight and are forced to remember what it's like to be just a normal person once again....

Hey, Niki, this is why we don't need Obamacare. Good Republicans can make medical diagnoses without seeing the patients at all, just by looking at a picture. The story doesn't even indicate that she's an M.D., I don't think-- I didn't read it all, just her comments. So Repubs don't even have to go to medical school to be better than doctors.

Reminds me of the Terry Schiavo case-- Republican Congressmen claimed to be able to make better diagnoses by watching video tapes 1000 miles away, than doctors on the scene.

The one thing I remember about shock from first aid training, is that it's unpredictable, it can manifest itself by almost any symptom, hot, cold, redness, paleness, just about any behavior. However any person reacts to any injury IS EXACTLY how they react to it, but there's always a reaction, that must be watched for and dealt with. That's why you send EVERYBODY to the hospital, so they can be evaluated by multiple PROFESSIONALS, over a period of time. And anybody who's lost a leg or legs, traumatically, will, ipso facto, be suffering from shock.

E-T-A: Well, DUH! on me again. The reporter wrote almost exactly what I wrote in that last paragraph, in the bottom half of his story. I need to read complete posts, not just get mad halfway through...

Obviously they don't need (or LIKE) things like science, medicine, etc., so why would they want to go to school to learn about them anyway? As we can see from our residents here, they know everything about everything--wonder if they're born that way?

Don't worry about not reading all of anything...around here, I'm pretty sure if you miss anything, someone will snark at you about it... ;o) But yeah, you and he are both right, which of course means NOTHING to the conspiracy-minded. Well, it's Sunday, the Christian day of worship. So let's have some Christian insanity--it's not just bad to MARRY someone of the same sex, it's heretical to ATTEND such a ceremony:
Quote:

Attending Same-Sex Weddings Will ‘Harm Relationship With God’ Says Bishop

Not entirely unexpected but disgusting all the same. Rhode Island Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas Tobin has written a pastoral letter underlining his church’s backwards views on marriage equality. Rhode Island became the tenth U.S. state to legalize marriage equality last week, the culmination of 16 years of battle in the heavily Catholic state.

But, as with any struggle for justice, the outworn ways of thinking are slow to die. Bishop Tobin is one of those dinosaurs who believes that homosexuality is a sin and that gays are lesser beings without the rights afforded to the rest of us. He proved that with his May 2 pastoral letter:
Quote:

At this moment of cultural change, it is important to affirm the teaching of the Church, based on God’s word, that “homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered,” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #2357) and always sinful. And because “same-sex marriages” are clearly contrary to God’s plan for the human family, and therefore objectively sinful, Catholics should examine their consciences very carefully before deciding whether or not to endorse same-sex relationships or attend same-sex ceremonies, realizing that to do so might harm their relationship with God and cause significant scandal to others.

(There's) the word "objective". The way he uses it, “… therefore objectively sinful…” is directly opposite of the word’s actual meaning. An objective principle is one that is uncolored by an opinion. Facts are objective. While Bishop Tobin might like to think that his archaic laws are objective, that is just not true.

As to “… harm(ing) their relationship with God” goes, who is Bishop Tobin to say that? Yes, I realize that the Catholic church sees men like Tobin as intercessors between God and the members of their church but Martin Luther had a thing or two to say about that several hundred years ago. As far as the theory of intercession goes, I’m with him. Every person’s relationship with God (however they see Him/Her/It) is personal, everyone has their own relationship with the Divine. Every person should be able to decide what weddings they want to attend and base that on their own understanding of God. Perhaps people who do decide to attend same-sex weddings will be thinking of Jesus’ command to love one another instead of trying to find ways to hate others. More at http://www.addictinginfo.org/2013/05/05/attending-same-sex-weddings-wi
ll-harm-relationship-with-god-says-bishop/

It's not really insanity, it's fear mongering, pure and simple, meant to intimidate "Christians" who've bought into that Angry God concept. And it's disgusting.

Harvard’s Niall Ferguson Suggests Keynes’ Economic Theories Were Flawed… Because He Was Gay

Conservative Harvard professor Niall Ferguson reportedly told a large group of financial advisers and investors in California this week that the problem with John Maynard Keynes‘ economic philosophy was that he didn’t care about future generations. Ferguson came to this conclusion because Keynes was gay and had no children.

Financial Advisor magazine’s Tom Kostigen was the first to report the statements by Ferguson, writing:
Quote:

Ferguson responded to a question about Keynes’ famous philosophy of self-interest versus the economic philosophy of Edmund Burke, who believed there was a social contract among the living, as well as the dead. Ferguson asked the audience how many children Keynes had. He explained that Keynes had none because he was a homosexual and was married to a ballerina, with whom he likely talked of “poetry” rather than procreated. The audience went quiet at the remark. Some attendees later said they found the remarks offensive…

[Ferguson said] it’s only logical that Keynes would take this selfish worldview because he was an “effete” member of society. Apparently, in Ferguson’s world, if you are gay or childless, you cannot care about future generations nor society.

Ferguson evidently realized his comments were controversial and potentially offensive, as he published an “unqualified apology” on his website today:
Quote:

I should not have suggested – in an off-the-cuff response that was not part of my presentation – that Keynes was indifferent to the long run because he had no children, nor that he had no children because he was gay. This was doubly stupid. First, it is obvious that people who do not have children also care about future generations. Second, I had forgotten that Keynes’s wife Lydia miscarried.

My disagreements with Keynes’s economic philosophy have never had anything to do with his sexual orientation. It is simply false to suggest, as I did, that his approach to economic policy was inspired by any aspect of his personal life. As those who know me and my work are well aware, I detest all prejudice, sexual or otherwise.

http://www.mediaite.com/online/harvards-niall-ferguson-suggests-keynes
-economic-theories-were-flawed-because-he-was-gay/

That's a very strange apology. If everyone knows he "detests all prejudice, sexual or otherwise", why would he say the things he did? There's a myriad of prejudicial statements in there, from anti-homosexual to misogynistic to the trashing of an entire segment of society...

So I'll call it Crazy From the Right; an attempt to say "I'm not a bad guy" after making NUMEROUS remarks only a "bad guy" would make!

As I explained in another thread; we ARE in the middle, almost all of us on the side of SOME gun control. Those on the other side hate us, revile us, constantly claim we want to take away EVERYONE's guns, do away with the Second Amendment, and on and on. That's why "debate" here on the subject has become impossible, and why I post my disclaimer, because anyone in favor of ANY kind of curb on guns, in any form, is considered a flat-out liar who wants to confiscate ALL guns. Where does that allow civil debate?

If you wanted to take the time to look back, you could see where the "discussion" used to be attempted, repeatedly; now I just post material to bring it to people's attention; I know what the response will be, and I think the other moderates like me have given up trying too.

To me it is one issue among many, but being called a liar, vilified and lied ABOUT, by someone here I once considered a friend taught me how impossible this is to discuss, even moreso than politics or religion, so now I just offer news and comment.

Reminder: I DO NOT WANT TO TAKE AWAY ANYONE'S GUNS, remember? I argue for SOME logical restrictions to the number of guns out there and who is allowed to have them. And I certainly argue against children having guns of ANY kind!

New Poll Shows Armed Rebellion Supported By 44% Of Republicans

(Poll at http://publicmind.fdu.edu/2013/guncontrol/) This goes to show that the sensationalistic endorsement of fringe conspiracy theories that are driven forward in the name of freedom and small government by the conservative right are starting to take hold. The history of politics has shown us time and time again that the words that win vocabulary dominance can end up influencing or deciding which way public support goes — and the Republican side of things has proven itself to be quite effective of making use of fear as a motivator, especially through their propaganda wing, Fox News.

Looking at the cite, 29% of all surveyed think armed revolution to protect liberties might be necessary in the next few years (pretty close to 1/3, eh, Wulf?), with 5% unsure. 44% of Republicans, 27% of Independents, and 18% of Democrats think revolution might be needed.

So apparently there's quite a few "crazy" Independents and Democrats out there too.

I might also note that there's a bit of semantic difference between "... think armed revolution to protect liberties might be necessary" as described in the poll, and "Armed Rebellion Supported By..." in the title.

But children already have guns. Generally guns they use under the supervision of their parents or other responsible people. Our shooting club sponsors rifle matches for youth shooters all the time. Has been doing so for years with no issues.

But despite your statement that "I DO NOT WANT TO TAKE AWAY ANYONE'S GUNS", you ..."certainly argue against (these) children having guns of ANY kind!".

Domo: Moderate when it comes to guns. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough. I'm definitely not moderate when it comes to any number of other issues, but on the issue of guns; we have guns in the house, I have shot guns, my husband owns several, and I don't want to take away anyone's guns, despite Geezer's attempts to split hairs and his need to even specifically misquote me to do so. Which hair splitting, by the way, is a perfect example of what we get from the pro-gun folk, for whom it is a simple case of "all or nothing, period". He's actually wrong even there; I ARGUE against children having guns; I don't want to take away any currently-owned guns, I want to stop MARKETING guns to children.

But of course, that means nothing to our pro-gun posters.

So suggesting better enforcement of existing laws, strengthening reporting of folks adjudged dangerous due to mental problems to the NICS system, improving reporting by mental health professionals, de-stigmatizing looking for mental health treatment, programs to reduce bullying, improving physical security in schools and other public places, and even expanding background checks (although I don't expect it'd do much good), is all or nothing?

Niki. When you argue against children having guns, it seems only reasonable to think you don't want children to have guns. If they already have guns and you don't want them to have guns, the only way to get what you want is to take the guns away.

Geezer, I don't recall those suggestions coming from you; it may have been a while ago and I may have forgotten. If so, I was wrong. I certainly have no recollection of you or anyone else being in favor of any form of expanded background checks; if any of you are, that's welcome news.

Perhaps you could ASK before assuming; many people own guns today which have been made illegal, do they not? Is there not some form or other of "grandfathering", or somesuch, which allows people to keep things which have later been made illegal to possess? There are ways to deal with the issue of children and guns...ignoring the mere fact that my not "wanting" something does not necessarily mean I am always in favor of making LAWS against something or CONFISCATING something. There are other ways of preventing things than going to someone's house, confiscating something and making them to be criminals... If we could make an effort to recognize such things, communication might be possible. Just an idea.
