Disney's legal department tries a really dumb stunt.

Quote:

On May 1, the entertainment giant filed an application to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to secure the phrase "Día de los Muertos," or "Day of the Dead," across multiple platforms. Disney subsidiary Pixar is releasing a film -- for time being called "The Untitled Pixar Movie About Dia de los Muertos" -- this fall.

Here's the problem -- Día de los Muertos is a traditional holiday celebrated on November 1 and 2 in Mexico and across Latin America. People honor the lives of lost family members or friends by building altars, holding processions, decorating gravesites and placing offerings for loved ones. Over the years, the holiday has gained a foothold in the United States, too.

The holiday is the Latin American equivalent of All Saint's Day, and its English, Celtic and American spin-off, All Hallow's Eve or Haloween.
What were the boys at the house of mouse legal department thinking? Seems like nothing much but the size of their wallets.

Reaction among Latin Americans, predictably, has been strong. Lalo Alcazar, the cartoonist, responded with Muerto Mouse.( Which I think is brilliant, and funny, and exactly in the spirit of the holiday.)

Given Disney's well-known attitude toward copyright infringement, they'll probably be all over HIM. They're worst than Fox with the Jayne hats...

Funny, too, because the Big D is often a quite liberal place, doing stuff like offering insurance benefits for same sex spouses, which they did quite a few years ago. But then they also went all out when the theme park employees tried to unionize.

I guess maybe mercenary triumphs over all...

Very simple, straight forward question, Niki.

Even THAT'S too much for you ?

Put down the pipe, dear.

Looks like a fairly white majority to me...

BTW, it took around 30 seconds of Googling to find this. Rappy could have easily put down the pipe and looked it up himself, but he's not smart enough to do his own homework, it seems.

Rappy's response? "You're lying, gullible ( believing in some BS you heard on msnbc ) or hard of hearing."

That's why I didn't bother to reply. They're a major American corporation. Who else is gonna be in their legal department?

I didn't check your source, but obviously, nobody of hispanic origin woulda been so callous and dumb, so insulting of his own culture.
And I have to admit, I never considered the possibility that there could be black lawyers working there. MY bad...
E-T-A: I could nitpick that those were the Board of Directors, not the legal department. If I wasn't so lazy, I'd dig into their individual bios, see how many are lawyers. But I am, so I'll just bet a dollar most of 'em are. I see ONE black guy, out of maybe 20 people on that page. I also note, for the record, that a fair number of them are Women, so maybe I was unfair to say "guys." I stand by "dumb."

Still seems to be a question as to the ethnic make up of those who actually were in the decission process. As this is 2013, & not the Mad Men era of the US business world , it was / is an apt question.

Still not sure why skin color is relevant in this matter. Stupid comes in all forms. Prejudiced much ?

That's what you get out of 1 simple question ?

That's a bit incongruous, coming from someone who makes all sorts of blanket statements and assumptions about anyone he or she perceives as a "liberal".

But you can bet this kind of thing happens in all nations and by their respective ethnicities, don't you think?

I do not recall any other nation trying to copyright "Dia De Los Muertos", Cinco de Mayo, Halloween, New Year's Eve, or Christmas, Easter, or Fourth of July.

Do you have any examples of this being done by all other nations and their respective ethnicities, or is this just more of your usual "I believe it, therefore it's true" kind of "evidence"?
