Hate speech about homosexuality, that is. Nonetheless, I found this interesting:
Quote:

Prior to the advent of Twitter, the social media networking site for decidedly anti-social people who can not live in the moment or articulate hatred with their mouths, you had to burn crosses or beat up gay people if you wanted to express your phenomenally, breathtaking idiotic and bigoted views. Now all it takes is an internet connection, 140 characters, and carpel tunnel syndrome.

Geography students at Humboldt State University in California have invented a stunning new interactive map that wonderfully depicts some of the most overtly racist and homophobic regions in America (I mean, ‘Merica) based upon tweets sent out from those places. And once again, Rhode Island has proven to be a racist potty mouth. Not really, but could you imagine? In other wards, we now have an interactive map that confirms Texas and the south are outposts of socially backwards thinking. In what more closely resembles skin cells having sex, the map identifies the most hateful tweets (and Twitter users) emanating from the eastern half of the country, particularly states like Oklahoma and Texas. The most racist tweets came out of lesser populated areas (or the only type of populated areas) in the states of Indiana and North Dakota. No word yet if whether they will start handing out bronze statues in the shape of burning crosses yet. Actual interactive map at http://users.humboldt.edu/mstephens/hate/hate_map.html]

Goodness gracious...look at the San Francisco Bay Area (on the actual map). Over seven million people (in 2010, no doubt more now), and look what a lovely shade of grey, with a light overtone of pale blue, it is. In fact, the only place California gets even CLOSE to red is Saccamenna...no surprise there! Actually, in all of the West, only three spots actually attained "red" status, two in Idaho (no surprise THERE, either!) and one in Oregon. I love where I live!

Re California- I'm surprised Orange county didn't light up red. But maybe their attitude doesn't extend to homosexuality.

It doesn't, NewOld. Orange isn't that bad...terribly right, yes, but see it's MONIED right, that's different from poor, rural right. And they probably don't use Twitter as much, either, hee, hee, hee! They're not as Republican as they used to be, and it's going down steadily. From a high of 74/24 Republican in 1984, they've dropped to 50/47 in 2008 (51/45 in 2012, but still....). The GOP is losing Orange, steadily ( http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/11/24/republicans-losing-strongho
ld-on-orange-county-calif/
).

Modoc County, a little block waaaay up in our Northeastern corner, is our most Republican county, but their population doesn't give them much power (2.5 people per square mile ;o). There are lots of "red" counties--in fact, if you look at the map, by far the majority of counties in California are Republican. It's just that they are rural, sparsely populated, and almost all farm counties in the Central Valley. So while we have our battles within the state, nationally (as in Presidential and Senatorial), we're pretty solidly blue.

So apparently even our Republican population isn't all that interested in spewing homophobic hate speech on Twitter. Probably too busy on the farm... ;o)

Hey, I grew up in Ukiah, up there in Mendocino county. It wasn't always the hippie, NewAge, dope-lovin' place it is now. I remember it as a Republican town in a silent majority Republican county. I notice it's not quite blue on that map, shading a little bit gray. must not be quite totally accepting of homosexuals.

And I live down here in Long Beach, remember. Just across the city limits from Orange County, and I've worked there on and off the last 10 years.'Course, the places I've worked have been the poor parts of OC, and they have the same gang, drug and crime problems as the rest of the LA urban monster. Glad to see that they're improving, and the numbers suggest that they're like Wolfie's growth and victory in the other thread. A few more wins like that, they'll be like the dinosaurs, extinct and found only as bones...

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

The map is about more than homophobia. There are three separate hate categories - homophobia, racism, and disabilities. You can even check out each individual epithet. And then there are the not so grand totals of all hate tweeting.

http://users.humboldt.edu/mstephens/hate/hate_map.html#

It looks like medium and large cities in the northeast, around the Great Lakes and along the west coast are relatively free of hate twittering but not rural areas, and both rural and urban areas in the south and southeast have a high level of hate.

Come to think of it, this matches my personal experience. Being exceptionally white and looking like someone's stay at home mom, I get a lot of hate comments directed at 'them', fishing for a kindred spirit. I just pretend to be deaf. Oh I'm sorry ... did you say something to me? You're going to have to speak up, I'm a little deaf ... If I'm feeling mean I keep asking them to raise the volume till they get too embarrassed to shout it out to the world.

NewOld, I remember when Ukiah and that area were truly rural and pretty damned redneck. I spent a lot of time in Arcata, where my oldest friend in the world was the first female park ranger, back in the '60s when it was just being "invaded" by the left, and know exactly what you mean. Her sister still lives there (retired midwife who used to grow dope)...they sure changed the place!!!

Just to say: I LOVE that area!

Kiki, I LOVE it...you go girl!! I've never experienced that, living where I have, first off, and never having looked like a WASP anyway--coloring does me little good, as I've got dad's olive skin and used to have that kind of so-brown-it's-almost-black eyes and hair, but my choice of clothing was a dead giveaway from 17 on, so I got exactly the opposite. Except no hate speech directed at the "other side"...

I didn't catch that there was more than homophobia, thanx for that.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Apparently, Colorado isn't very hateful. I'm frankly a little surprised, but pleased.

What reason had proved best ceased to look absurd to the eye, which shows how idle it is to think anything ridiculous except what is wrong.
