"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Quote:

Phil Plait, astronomer, lecturer, and science-writer, reviewed Powell's data and similarly stated, "Now I know some people will just say that this is due to mainstream scientists suppressing controversy and all that, but let me be succinct: That’s bull. Science thrives on dissenting ideas, it grows and learns from them. If there is actual evidence to support an idea, it gets published. I can point out copious examples in my own field of astronomy where papers get published about all manners of against-the-mainstream thinking, some of which come to conclusions that, in my opinion, are clearly wrong.

So let this be clear: There is no scientific controversy over this. Climate change denial is purely, 100 percent made-up political and corporate-sponsored crap."

Actually, you're buying into a political agenda hook, line, and sinker that's being sold to you by your dear and fluffly corporate overlords.

Tornado activity hits 60-year low

The USA in the past 12 months has seen the fewest number of tornadoes since at least 1954, and the death tolls from the dangerous storms have dropped dramatically since 2011.

Just two years after a ferocious series of tornado outbreaks killed hundreds of Americans, the USA so far this year is enjoying one of the calmest years on record for twisters. Through Thursday, tornadoes have killed only three Americans in 2013; by the end of May 2011, 543 Americans had died.

The seven people killed from May 2012 to April 2013 is the fewest in a 12-month period since five people died in September 1899-August 1900, according to Harold Brooks, research meteorologist with the National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, Okla.

The year-to-date count of tornadoes is probably approaching the lower 10% of all years on record, said Greg Carbin, warning coordination meteorologist with the Storm Prediction Center in Norman.

Rap's choice to "debunk" climate change would be hysterical, if it weren't the cause of such horrific suffering.

Oklahoma Tornado: 'Worst In The History Of The World'

An estimated two-mile-wide tornado touched down south of Oklahoma City Monday afternoon, and more storms are expected across the state. http://austinist.com/2013/05/20/tornado.php#photo-1]

He'd die rather than read it, of course, but here's the refutation:
Quote:

It turns out that of all the weather phenomena, from droughts to hurricanes, tornadoes are the most complex to answer from a broader atmospheric trends point of view. The reason is that a warming world affects the factors that lead to tornadoes in different ways.

Climate change is supposed, among other things, to bring warmer and moister air to earth. That, of course, would lead to more severe thunderstorms and probably more tornadoes. The issue is that global warming is also forecast to bring about less wind shear. This would allow hurricanes to form more easily, but it also would make it much harder for tornadoes to get the full about lift and instability that allow for your usual thunderstorm to grow in height and become a fully-fledged tornado. Statistics over the past 50 years bear this out, as we've seen warmer and more moist air as well as less wind shear.

Meteorological studies differ on whether or not the warmer and moister air can overcome a lack of wind shear in creating more tornadoes in the far future. In the immediate past, the jet stream, possibly because of climate change, has been quite volatile. Some years it has dug south to allow maximum tornado activity in the middle of the country, while other years it has stayed to the north.

Although tornado reporting has in prior decades been not as reliable as today because of a lack of equipment and manpower, it's still not by accident that the six least active and four most active tornado seasons have been felt over the past decade. Another statistic that points to the irregular patterns is that the three earliest and four latest starts to the tornado season have all occurred in the past 15 years.

Basically, we've had this push and pull in recent history. Some years the number of tornadoes is quite high, and some years it is quite low. We're not seeing "average" seasons as much any more. Expect this variation to continue into the future as less wind shear and warmer moister air fight it out.

The overall result could very well be fewer days of tornadoes per Harold Brooks of the National Storm Center, but more and stronger tornadoes when they do occur. Nothing about the tornado in Moore, Oklahoma, or tornadoes over the past few decades break with this theory. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/may/21/moore-oklahoma-tornado-cli
mate-change

What is tornado season? Tornado season usually means the peak period for historical tornado reports in an area, when averaged over the history of reports. Niki, if you were paying attention, you'd notice I'm not arguing at all about "WORST TORNADO IN HISTORY"; I've no need to, since it's not an article I posted or cited, and it's not a claim I made.

Rappy is arguing with himself yet again, or with the voices in his head, it seems, arguing against things I've not said, and arguing apparently that since I haven't decried those things, I must be in full agreement with them.

I've heard reporters say that this was the most powerful tornado ever recorded, and others have said the one in Joplin, Missouri that had wind speeds above 300mph was the most powerful. So I've made zero claims about the "WORST TORNADO IN HISTORY", and could really give zero fucks about it in the first place.

I clearly posted who expanded on this 'worst the history of the planet ' crap, so any claims that it's 'voices in my head' are nonsensical. I was replying to the on air comments of msnbc's Bashir, and his hysterical lie.

Also nonsensical, is the insistence that there IS a stated start and end to tornado season, when I've clearly shown that no such start / end date exists with the national weather service, or anyone. It's you , Niki, not I, who is ignoring the facts on this matter.

Tornadoes can form at any time of the year, though tornadic activity does tick up during the spring.

America loves a winner!

I do not believe that word means what you think it means.

There IS an official start and end date listed for Hurricane season.

There is NOT any such equivalent to tornado season.

The debate is settled.

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen

I wasn't talking about just the "tornado season" bullshit, Mike, I meant going back and forth with him in general. However,

I'm trying hard not to be as abrasive as I frequently end up getting (and I'll bet not a single person every noticed or ever will notice), but this time I've just gotta say it:

Nitwits nitpick.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, as I posted before:
Quote:

What is tornado season? Tornado season means the peak period for historical tornado reports in an area, when averaged over the history of reports. There is a general northward shift in tornado season in the U. S. from late winter through mid summer. The peak period for tornadoes in the southern plains, for example, is during May into early June. On the Gulf coast, it is earlier during the spring; in the northern plains and upper Midwest, it is June or July. Remember: tornadoes can happen any time of year if the conditions are right!

Nobody said they couldn't happen any time, and tornado season encompasses different months in different areas of the country. But the simple fact is that there IS a TORNADO SEASON. I could find tons more cites, but I'm not going to engage this silliness any further.
