... Some friends of mine were at the Texas Capitol building today, and took some pictures. Actress Stephanie March (Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU) was there to speak; she's a friend of theirs, and from our hometown in West Texas (not West, Texas, which is a town, but West Texas, which is a geographical area of the state).

Some more pics of the crowd on hand today.

The view from the 4th floor of the Capitol:

Oh, and then this popped up.

The GOP responded by cutting power to the power outlets so people couldn't charge their devices, and then cutting the public WiFi.

And then the GOP ran away like frightened children.

You can't seperate the two. If you could we would not have an issue. It come down to who you think has more rights, a fetus or a women.

What makes it even more super-awesome is that it's a take-off on the whole "Molon Labe" meme AND the University of Texas's Longhorn mascot - they're printed on Texas Orange tees, too.

Hee, hee, hee; that's great, Mike! I read about the impending demonstration, sighed and thought to myself "But it won't mean a damned thing, 'cuz they're not in the government"...we've seen enough times in the past few years just how little some in government give a damn for the will of the people, and this will sadly just be another demonstration of same.

Good for them, nonetheless.

ETA: To answer your question, of the three news sources I check first every day, nothing on Time or Christian Science Monitor, two stories on the filibuster/special session on CNN. On the protest: Nada. Bit surprise...

Yeah, Rick Perry and the GOP are big supporters of "democracy" - right up until THE PEOPLE actually show up to have their say and be heard.

At that point, they quickly fold up like a cheap suit and then run and hide. They're in hiding now, praying that this all just goes away.

Surely not, Mike! I can't imagine either Perry OR the GOP hiding. They know they have the power to do what they want, the public be damned, and they've done it often enough before that I can't see it bothering them again this time. I'm sure they're completely untouched by the demonstration--ANY demonstration (unless, like the filibuster kerfuffle, it actually KEEPS them from doing what they want). Even then, they just turn around, call people names, and do what they want anyway.

They'll have their special session, pass the bill, Perry will sign it and things will go on just like before. For now at least. It will take a change in who has power in the government before they'll bat an eye at what their constituents want, surely.

It's also a reference to the Cannon Incident - TexASS being more or less founded by folks run out of every other halfway decent place on earth, often for good reason, and the Mexicans loaned them a small cannon to keep the pissed off (also having good reason to be given the conduct of the Texans) Comanche from slaughtering them in retaliation.

With a changing political situation internally and the increasing belligerence of their Texan guests, the Mexicans tried to take the cannon back only to be fired on and chased off (the Texan militia outnumbered them by 50% over and the soldiers were reluctant to kill them) by the Texans, which started a cascade failure of relations due to the Texans feeling they had the right to do as they pleased and the Mexicans feeling their hospitality had been betrayed, which is a much sorer point in many cultures other than ours.

But anyways, that is also a reference.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Gonzales

Oh, in case it ain't abundantly clear, outside of a few misplaced souls like Mikey here, yeah, I do generally despise Texans, I lived there for almost a year and am well aquainted with their casual regional racism - they use the word "Yankee" like a racial slur, with exactly that kind of hate behind it - damn ignoramuses can't seem to grok that Maryland is SOUTH of the Mason-Dixon line, their general loudmouthed bullying, cowardice and perfidy, nor have other southern states forgotten what a fair weather friend they were back in the civil war....
And yanno, in 180 years, their conduct as a whole ain't improved a goddamn bit.

Au contraire, mon amí - they met for just a few minutes yesterday, with the full throng in full voice just outside, and they then quickly called a hurry-up recess and ran away. They're due back on July 9th - I think the idea at this point is to either keep cut-n-running until the crowd tires of the shenanigans, or do a "super secret" meeting unannounced to the public so nobody can protest.

I'd actually agree with that to a degree. That being said, blanket bans prevent women from having life saving terminations, or from being able to make decisions when severe abnormalities exist. Later term abortions should be made case by case by doctors and the mother.

Where you get blanket bans, in places like Ireland, you see women dying or having to travel while very ill because the ethos is fetuses life overrules mothers life. You don't want it to get like that in the US

Right there - THAT is the point at which the unborn fetus has more rights in the eyes of some than the living woman. When the state mandates no exceptions for rape, incest, or life of the mother, it makes a conscious decision to take rights away from a woman and give them to the fetus.

I find it increasingly odd that our so-called "libertarians" fall so predictably on the side of those states on this issue.

I saw one woman say "Hail Satan" as she passed by the camera. No one was "chanting".

Your point is moot. As you say, this is one person, an outlier, an anomaly.

Besides, what if she's a Satanist? Even Rick Perry says that the Constitution doesn't guarantee anyone "freedom FROM religion."

With all of the singing it was impossible to make out anything else in the background, so whatever you think you heard (or was "reportedly*" said) apparently is fabrication - either yours or somebody else's.

*Rappy reportedly said that all women should be raped until they become pregnant, then forced to bear children.

Also, I noticed that you avoided a fairly direct, pointed, relevant question: At what point do the rights of the fetus supersede (oh, wait! That's a word you don't know yet!) the rights of the woman?

Whassa matter? Did they offend your bitty religious sensibilities by bringing up non-existent people and entities?

Also, did any of those people you so happily call "blasphemers or infidels" behead any christians at the rally?

If not, why'd you bother to bring it up?

If so, where's your evidence?

*IF* anyone was "yeillin" "Hail Satan" or "God is dead", who cares? How is that more offensive than singing religious hymns on public property?

Or are you suggesting that some people should be more equal than others?

Again, *IF* it even happened, so what? What is it you find specifically wrong with it?

And the answer to the question posted "At what point does that fetus have more rights than the woman?"

" never."

No one is suggesting that the rights of one individual should be GREATER than another.

It's about 'equality'. That's all.

When you remove the possibility of abortion in cases where the life of the mother is placed at extreme risk by continuing the pregnancy, that absolutely puts the rights of one "individual" (a fetus, which is absolutely not a child, not a person, not a citizen) ahead of another.

You might claim that YOU aren't suggesting that, but clearly many others ARE suggesting exactly that. And you're cheerleading them all the way.

So stop with all that phony bullshit about being a "libertarian", because where you're concerned, it's more like "Lie-bertarian."

Mike...just reminding you...you're attempting to DEBATE an issue with Rap...you do realize that, don't you?

The fact that the "if" you have mentioned has actually happened; that a NON-VIABLE fetus' life has cost the life of a mother in a documented incident we've all discussed, and there are more if anyone cared to find them, makes your point, but such will have no effect whatsoever on Rap's "argument" OR understanding of the situation (because he doesn't want to understand it, as we all know) means you are merely wasting your time.

Remember, when it comes to certain issues, like a woman's choice, Obama, global warming, ANYTHING having to do with Democrats/liberals/etc., he will NEVER acknowledge anything valid, only continue to spew or take a hard 90-degree turn to come up with some unrelated snark. But you already knew that. Just reminding you... ;o)

See my signature. Remember that little incident? The one where I posted video FROM SEVERAL DIFFERENT SOURCES showing exactly what I said happened? You really got all wrapped up in "IF" it ever happened, even going so far as to accuse me of lying, making stuff up, or being hard of hearing, rather than admitting that what I posted was 100% accurate and really did happen.

Meanwhile, you still can't grasp the whole "IF" thing regarding whether or not Muslims decapitated a Catholic priest - was it really a priest? Were they really Muslims?

And you post a video of one person saying "Hail Satan" in a joking way, one time, and claims it's crowds of people chanting those words.

I remain skeptical.

And as well, I ask you, who claims to be an "atheist", what difference it makes, what does it matter, if anyone DID say such things? Who cares? What does it prove? Are you as equally offended by so-called "christians" singing hymns and praying at the very same rally? If not, why do you give one religion any more credence over another, when you don't believe in any of it in the first place?

As I've pointed out before, you really suck at atheism. Your non-belief has a very pro-christian bias, and you can't help but show it in your words.

Oh, and Niki? I know; it's futile, but it is on occasion high-larious to watch Rappy wrap himself up in his own pretzel-like logic until he's choking himself with it.

Meanwhile, back to the subject of the bill and the filibuster:
Quote:

Texas GOP skirts law on anti-abortion bill

State Sen. Wendy Davis' stand in Texas was the "filibuster heard round the world" -- suddenly everywhere you look, you see news about one state or another rolling back reproductive rights.

Even as all eyes were on resumed hearings in Texas late Tuesday night, the North Carolina legislature was busy sneaking anti-choice measures into an unrelated bill, and Wednesday that bill passed the state Senate over the fierce objections of North Carolina women.

But the more I read about what is happening to women's rights, the less I see about how anti-choice lawmakers are passing these bills.

We're taught as kids that cheaters never win, but that lesson didn't sink in with Republican leaders in Texas and in many other states where these rights are under attack. Instead they've decided that if you don't have the people with you to pass a bill, you can just change the process.

Take the Texas bill: a hodgepodge of arbitrary restrictions, it would close nearly 90% of the clinics that perform abortions in Texas, making it impossible for women across the state to access all sorts of medical care they need and deserve. It would also ban all abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, which compromises the moral and medical autonomy of women who need care.

Following on 12 other states that have enacted the unconstitutional ban, Texas Republicans are trying to put in place costly restrictions to solve a problem that doesn't exist: The number of abortions after 20 weeks is tiny (less than 2%) and are most often sought by women in desperate circumstances, exactly the kind of cases that require close attention by doctors, not sweeping prohibitions by ideological politicians.

The Republicans couldn't pass this bill in regular session -- Texas law requires a two-thirds Senate majority for these measures, and the GOP simply didn't have it. So instead of building support the old-fashioned way for this radical legislation, Gov. Perry decided he'd just change the rules. He called a special session after the end of the normal legislative period, and his friend, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, declared they no longer needed a super majority vote.

What they didn't count on was opposition from citizens who knew the rules and wouldn't stand by while Republicans cheated. In the House, GOP committee members shut down legally mandated public hearings when witness after witness testified that they resented this intrusion into private, personal medical decisions; then committee members voted on the bill in a private room where the public couldn't see what they were doing.

And finally, in the move that earned them national disdain, they tried to use every dirty trick in the book to shut down Davis' historic talking filibuster in the final hours of this widely watched session.

They challenged the content of her speech. They cried crocodile tears about her receiving assistance to don a back brace. They ignored Democrats who were raising legitimate procedural questions. Republicans presiding over the debate recognized their fellow Republicans when Democrats had the floor.

One senator, Leticia Van de Putte, even had to ask: "At what point must a female senator raise her voice or hand to be recognized over the male colleagues in the room?"

And then, after Texans watching in the gallery erupted in jeers at the strong-handed tactics Republicans were using, the GOP leadership held a vote after midnight, after the special session had officially ended. They then changed the time stamp on the official record of the vote, only changing it back after they were caught red-handed. That meant the bill was dead, so Gov. Rick Perry did what cheaters do when they lose -- he called for a do-over.

I wish I could say the tactics in Texas were the exception, but Republicans are using underhanded ploys like these to pass anti-choice bills all over the country.

In Ohio, Republicans sneaked a requirement for unnecessary ultrasounds into a budget bill, without holding public hearings. In North Carolina, they shut out testimony from pro-choice activists late in the night to move their draconian measures to the floor for a vote.

On Monday, I stood in the hot Austin sun with thousands of fellow Texans who share my outrage at this attack on our fundamental rights. But they didn't just cheer for Davis' stand to protect women's rights and health. They were there to celebrate the rule of democracy, rules that Republicans have shown they will change if it suits their political ends.

But changing the rules doesn't change the truth. I don't know what will happen at this next special session in Texas, but I do know that if Republicans cheat their way to victory in this battle, they are going to lose the war for the confidence of the people they seek to represent. http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/03/opinion/hogue-texas-abortion-bill/index.
html?hpt=hp_t4

Amen to that last sentence. But of course they don't care. As long as their electorate is safe, they'll do whatever they can get away with.

That's factually inaccurate. I've acknowledge a woman's choice, early on in her pregnancy, to abort. I've acknowledged that the earth does warm and cool, and have many times made mention of where I agree w/ Obama, Dems, Liberals, etc...

But speaking of taking 90 degree turns on unrelated snarks, YOU'RE the one doing it right now, w/ the outlier of the most extreme cases, to use THAT as your baseline guide, when the discussion I'm having has nothing what so ever to DO with that at all!

The classless Left chanting, as pro-lifers do the unthinkable thing of singing! OMG!

And Kwickie, about the incident you're referring, you absolutely did distort the issue, and misrepresent what / how it actually played out. You know this, and yet you cling to this completely unrelated nonsense, out of some warped since of 'victory' over me. I guess if that's the best you can do, I can see why you'd want to immortalize it in your sig. Who am I to belittle a beggar who finds a half eaten muffin in the trash, and claims that to be a four course meal. Bon Appetit!

But all this fuss reminds me of another case of where something happened ( allegedly ) in public, except there were NO eye witnesses, and not ONE shred of evidence, audio or otherwise, to corroborate that it ever took place. Remember the 'racial epithets', supposedly hurled at black Democrats, as they marched to sign ObamaCare into law ?

100,000 $ was put up for anyone to take, if they could offer up just 1 single audio / video of that event.

No one came forward. Because it never happened.

How curious, that you'll ignore the actual evidence of 1 event taking place, while you buy into that which has ZERO evidence, what so ever.

My days of not taking your seriously certainly have come to a middle.
