I offer just this one small story, from England:
Quote:

Twitter faces backlash over rape-threat tweets

A barrage of rape and death threats on Twitter aimed at feminist Caroline Criado-Perez, who petitioned to have women displayed on British banknotes -- has sparked outrage in the global media and among the Twitterati.

The feminist champion, whose campaign resulted in the Bank of England agreeing to picture Pride and Prejudice author Jane Austen on every £10 bill, tweeted throughout the abuse: "I actually can't keep up with the screen-capping & reporting -- rape threats thick and fast now. If anyone wants to report the tweets to Twitter."

Twitter UK's General Manager Tony Wang said the social-networking company takes online abuse very seriously, offering to suspend accounts, and called on people to report any "violation of Twitter rules."

World media

But the story has ignited a backlash against the site from users and the media alike with more than 50,000 people signing on online petition urging Twitter to tackle Internet trolls.

UK Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper wrote to Wang on Sunday criticising Twitter's "inadequate" response.

In her letter, Cooper wrote: "Despite the scale and seriousness of these threats, the official response from Twitter continues to be extremely weak -- simply directing Caroline away from Twitter towards the police, and, belatedly, directing users to abuse-reporting forms on Twitter."

Writing in The Guardian, columnist Tanya Gold called on "misogynists" to be shamed rather than criticized, describing the Internet trolls as "lonely, fearful and dumb," adding that the emergence of social media "has given the vicious a voice."

The BBC's technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones argues that Twitter now faces a "tricky dilemma" of protecting free speech while under pressure to "make the network a safer and more polite place."

The Telegraph's chief technology blogger Mic Wright recognizes that comment sections on user-generated websites such as YouTube are the "post-apocalyptic badlands of the web... a resting place for the misspelled dribblings of the chronically hard-of-thinking." But he argues the Twitter conundrum is a societal problem not a technology-based one. http://edition.cnn.com/2013/07/29/tech/twitter-criado-perez-abuse-medi
a-reaction/index.html?hpt=ieu_c2

One woman petitions for a female face on currency, and that's how people react, they threaten her with rape and death. A perfect example.

And "post-apocalyptic badlands of the web... a resting place for the misspelled dribblings of the chronically hard-of-thinking." Sounds kinda like this place, too.

Oh heck no. This place has taken some bad turns over time, but there's a reason we're all posting here as opposed to somewhere else. There are places out there on the internet that will make you want to light yourself on fire, and as a connoisseur of human folly, even *I* avoid that stuff. Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, comment pages on media news pages, and WORSE.

I also note that while I like Jane Austen's social commentary as much as anyone, I hate the idea of her gracing currency.

But... The article IS indicative of a much larger trend. Coupled with deteriorating gender relations in the real world, the past five years or so have seen the internet change from laughing about how "there are no girls on the internet" and "a/s/l" and "tits or gtfo" to very hostile territory towards any girl who openly identifies as such online.

I trace this to various real-life movements that have risen up in the meantime that have gender resentment as a basis, and which strongly correlate with a broad group of internet users. They are a vocal minority, but many other male internet users are sympathetic towards them, and the internet is still predominantly male. With few consequences and implicit support, they run rampant.

Of course the kind of male that tries to protect girls on the internet is equally frustrating, for different reasons, and so really the best option is for everyone to be deliberately obscure about which gender they happen to be, and to not correct anyone if they get it wrong. After all, it's not like gender really matters one way or another.

Well, Byte, since I don't "do" Twitter, and almost never "comment", I guess I've been lucky enough to be ignorant of what you mentioned. Think I like it that way; this place is quite bad enough!

Me, I don't mind Austin on currency...there have been many whose faces have ended up there, for far sillier reasons I'm sure!

I guess to a degree it's only logical, that when the status quo is challenged, resentment is the result. Hopefully in time that will change, but certainly changing the "rape mentality" is important, in my opinion.

Where on the internet is all this women-bashing happening? I don't hang out in many places, so I'm luckily not subjected to it.

But then, I've been online since the late 90's any never had the impression that there were no women on the internet, so I obviously never hung out anywhere terribly guy-dominated.

Is it gaming places?

Man, I'm ignorant.

Also: This is horrific. Death threats over a face on currency? What? Who are these people?

It's EVERYWHERE. As you observed, it happened on twitter over currency. Or basically whenever anyone with a female picture posts a blog anywhere too.

However, it is very prevalent in games, primarily because the group I'm talking about on the internet is correlated even MORE strongly with games.

Quote:

What? Who are these people?

They're people who think that anyone who openly self-identifies as female on the internet is just "out for attention." And yes, I'm aware of the unfortunate implications in that re: jobs, recognition, or the suggestion that a woman should never be at the center of attention or draw attention to herself. It's actually what's intended by the philosophy.

It gets worse. If a post identifies as a feminist, or if they are promoting a cause to recognize one single woman without promoting any men to recognize as well, holy shit, duck and cover.

Basically it's the personal grievances of individuals fitted into a massive backlash of guys who think feminism went "too far." And okay, in some ways it did. The political correctness annoyed the piss out of everyone, and there were some double standards with some of the affirmative action and promotional stuff that went on. Plus there's STILL unequal treatment under the law, especially in regards to divorces and alimony and child custody. Guys are also offensively stereotyped as libidinous idiots or violent jerks who are always at fault whenever a woman is involved and that's wrong and unfair.

But then there are those who think that in all of history it's really WOMEN who had all the power, and talk about evolutionary pressures that have victimized men over the ages and now none of them can get dates and no one will consent to be with them or have their babies or there's all these women who want to work instead of taking care of kids. Unless of course they can assert dominance over the women who have reduced men to this state, and all those feminists and lesbians and ambitious attention getting ladies stand in the way of that dominance.

Hence death and rape threats as the go-to.

Because those women are DESTROYING SOCIETY, you see, upsetting the natural order of the breadwinning male hunter and the uneducated stay at home cave-dwelling mother who keeps her mouth shut and relies on the male for everything and who probably was the result of an arranged marriage and dowry. The economy is going down the tubes because of men having to compete with women in both the educational field and workplace. Also women are just such naturally nurturing people they fall for every bleeding heart story and want to finance all the social programs at the cost of bigger debt. Which is why women shouldn't vote. And heaven forbid a woman should be able to chose her partners or whether or not she wants children - that's ALSO destroying society because of the falling birthrate.

There's truth here and there, but it's mostly a load of pseudoscience and pettiness and it's all taken to an extreme.

It's a pretty new thing. None of this was around when I was 12 on the internet. I only started to encounter it maybe two or three years ago.

Do yourself a favour and don't look up "Pick Up Artists" or "The Game" and RUN, and I do mean FULL SPRINT, from anyone who whines about how they're such a Nice Guy but women only want the D-Bags.

Oh, ahaha! In real life, I know to avoid the creeps when they show their colors. I can be quite combative when I encounter disturbing perspectives. No person had best ever mention the concept "Friend Zone" to me or they'll be sorry.

It's really only online that I tend to not encounter it. I suspect I have very female-dominated interests. Fandom, historical geekery, online comics, lifestyle stuff and various news sites. Little opportunity for ugliness. This place is the closest I get to full-on disturbing opinions openly displayed.

...I think those online groups mostly talk about bombing and people they're upset died and successful martyrs and their dislike of America on the internet.

There was a Times News reporter who joined a jihadist group on facebook, that was pretty much what he saw. Also some comments about American reality show contestants and their chances, go figure.

Men's Rights Boards and Pick Up Artists and places in the deep net are the ones on the internet who talk about violence against/ "taking revenge" on women. But that's more of an internet tough guy act, so it is a little silly compared to the actual abuse that the fundamentalists do at home.

But that doesn't mean behaviour towards women on the internet isn't a problem. Or that some of these guys don't become abusive when you get to know them. I've known some girls who got seriously messed up after some encounters with them. As I said, some of them got suicidal. There were some very dicey situations. ._.

Late in the day, but prize for first guffaw of the morning goes to Kiki.

I guess I've been lucky. Or maybe it's that the majority of forums I've inhabited have been either mental-health websites or urban-mushing Facebook pages; this is the only other real example. What I've encountered on the former were mostly females, and what males we had were sensitive, thoughtful people we much appreciated, and a mixed back on the latter with no gender problems at all. The only misogyny I've ever experienced has been here (and the previous Firefly forum). I think I'll keep it that way.

I've certainly SEEN the kinds of comments to which you are referring, represented as "comments" to many articles, but I've never been enmeshed in any site where it was prevalent, again except for the two Firefly sites.

I really dun wanna break Bytes brain, but unfortunately there are girls who play into that whole stupidity, including one in particular I pulled out of a nasty situation who then got pissed at me for daring to ignore her supposed charms (of which a decent personality was not among them).
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ArentYouGoingToRavishMe
You have no *IDEA* how much I desperately wanted to slap her right then, but that too probably would have been playing into her game, not to mention against all I believe - but damn, this crap is bad enough without them friggin playing to it, some of em!

As for gamers and online games - I intentionally use gender neutral usernames, and often get assumed to be female, and yeah verily there's a ton of creeperiffic behavior goin on there.

I do sometimes troll with it though - in Need For Speed 2: Underground, I had built the most ridiculously, grotesquely cutesyfied Peugeot 206, complete with pink paint job, rainbows, everything that just screamed someones-kid-sister, and some of the attention directed at that username was... ugh, apalling - of course vengeance was quickly served, given that little 206 was maxed out and fine tuned to an extreme and I was pretty damn good with it, oh the egos that were crushed, bwah hah hah.

Special mention goes to AnthonyT's wife though, who also plays World of Tanks, and who's primary tactic is a bloodthirsty headlong charge, followed by (and it's hilarious, like Ned Flanders blowing a gasket) Anthony losing his cool cause messing with his girl is his one berserk button, and then me throwing all in with a MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! and thirty seconds later what's left of the enemy team is running the hell AWAY from us in mortal dread.
I wonder if they ever even suspected the Ram-II pilot taking point was a chick, I doubt they'd believe it if you told em.

Anyhows, back to the topic at hand directly - that the GOP has made institutional disrespect of women an integral part of their party platform is one of the core reasons for my hatred of all that they are.

"Anne Coulter."

I'm pretty sure I've heard her use much of the same arguments here. Though how much of it she believes and how much is a joke or some manner of "like it would really happen" is debateable.

Or if you mean in terms of people using dirty underhanded and abusive tricks, yes, I know girls do it too. They have their "Rules" and both genders appear to contribute to making human courtship rituals look like violent mindgame warfare.

I imagine it makes some guys suicidal as well. But it's the girls I've had to talk to about it.

So I am frustrated by both the Men's Rights movement and the feminists, especially when they decide that they're "victims" and deserve special treatment or that they're BETTER than the other group. No, screw that, it perpetuates all of this intolerable NONSENSE slinging back and forth.

The Heroic Campaign to Keep Women Off Money Takes to Twitter

Martin Luther King Jr. Rosa Parks. Gandhi. That nun on Orange Is the New Black. Standing up in noble protest for a righteous cause, even at the cost of getting arrested, is known worldwide as a hard but honorable thing to do. Now we have one more person to add to the pile, the anonymous Manchester, England, resident who was arrested after gallantly taking to Twitter to threaten a feminist activist with rape in retaliation for her successful campaign to have Jane Austen's face grace the 10-pound note. While this anonymous man will have a rough time of it in the legal system, he has earned the gratitude of generations of misogynists who would rather not be reminded that women are, in fact, capable of writing great novels every time they simply want to buy a candy bar and a soda at the local magazine rack. Anonymous Englishman, we salute you.

The Bank of England periodically switches out the face on the back of banknotes (the queen is always on the front) in order to prevent counterfeiting and, with the proposed removal of Elizabeth Fry from the five-pound note, there was a strong possibility that there would be no women on English currency at all. Caroline Criado-Perez, founder of The Women's Room, started a petition to demand that there be at least one nonroyal lady in the mix and was successful when the Bank of England announced Jane Austen would be replacing Charles Darwin on the 10-pound note.

While most people reacted to this news somewhere on the scale between "sounds good" and "cool, Jane Austen is great," misogynists were the only brave heroes to recognize the threat afoot. After all, feminists had already managed to get a woman onto every bill in circulation through their gynocratic innovation of the hereditary monarchy. Now they're trying to convince everyone that women can write, too. It cannot stand. They deluged Criado-Perez online, publishing her personal information and overwhelming her Twitter account with "50 abusive tweets an hour" for about 12 hours. And now the Manchester police, who are wholly owned by the forces of matriarchy, have decided to intervene.

But there is no doubt in my mind that misogynists will not be thwarted, as long experience shows that their dedication to their noble cause is ever stalwart and true. While it seems that the choice to acknowledge a great female novelist—one who flagrantly died without marrying and having children, no less!—is going forward, perhaps the brave harassment campaign will send a message to anyone who starts getting ideas about putting more women on the money. There are legions of female activists, scientists, and yes, even writers who fall at that dangerous intersection of "notable" and "British" that could get them on the money, and for those who want to hide this history, harassment may be their only hope.

Amusing article, too.

I'm honestly not sure AU appreciates both sides of the conversation about the birth control for health issues thing, but trying to explain it just has him digging his feet in more.

I'm also not really sure he's as atheist as he says.

Whozits, however, can sometimes be an example of this generation of internet users, particularly the behaviours and attitudes I already described. And sometimes Wulf and Jack too.

Perhaps the most unnerving thing about this kind of ugly language, when it comes out, is that most of the rest of the time they're probably completely normal people. Not always immediately identifiable, not bothersome to be around or oppressive to women they know. This bad behaviour comes out under the cloak of anonymity on the internet, and most of them probably wouldn't act on any of this. Except for a certain rare few, but there is no need to go into that now.

While I must always call out rape or death threats (or wishing death on others) they're otherwise just going to believe whatever they want to, immune to any attempt to shame them from their beliefs. But that's easy enough to handle. I just have to resolve not to live by the rules or judgements they would impose on me. They can do nothing to me.
