Placerville’s Hangtown Homeless Camp Preparing To Close
http://fox40.com/2013/10/26/placervilles-hangtown-homeless-camp-prepar
ing-to-close-2
/

"An apparently successful city sanctioned homeless camp will never-
theless close in three weeks because a permanent site still hasn’t
been found.

"Hangtown Haven was started just over a year ago and survived
some serious glitches before becoming a model homeless camp that
has been visited by people from around the country.

“It’s just kind of snowballed into an incredibly successful program,
more so than we would have ever guessed even a year ago,” said
Hangtown Haven volunteer president Art Edwards.
...
"The City of Placrville and many community organizations are happy
with the success of the camp. But Hangtown Haven is operating on
a temporary use permit that has been renewed several times. The
site is on temporary loan, and is not conducive to safe foot traffic.
Water and sanitation are also temporary.

"The latest permit expires in three weeks. Hangtown Haven support-
ers have found a replacement site on county land, but it ran into
objections by nearby businesses and residents."

Last 2 or 3 months, headline was "Homeless Haven to Move."

"objections by nearby businesses" Yeah, I expected that.
The plan was to move them to a location next to Hwy 50 & a cross
street with our three biggest shopping centers.

Business owners would expect panhandling, theft & vandalism.

I have seen a couple of them around my hood that panhandle.
Sometimes begging for cigarettes instead of money. My shopping
buddy & I make our last stop at a convenience store/gas station,
& y'know, I'm a little old lady. After being approached twice by
a homeless man, I began to park in a more visible location & didn't
wait for my friend in the car, but went inside.

There's one enterprising fellow who sits on a chair outside our
thrift store; he plays his ukulele & sings for a living. He's not a
good singer, but people appreciate his effort.

To me, it's a given that El Dorado County should take responsibility
and provide adequate space & services for these people. Until they
do, let the successful homeless camp remain.

Society has demonized compassion, and this is why this society is done for.

WISHIMAY

To a certain extent though, I can see why. I've seen several articles where interactions turn violent with people begging- on both sides of the fence. People take things so far these days. There's a guy who begs at a gas station next town over...The toad quit his job so he could panhandle and actually makes more than he did working. I've had a guy block me in with his car and come give me a sob story (complete lie, btw. he was crashing and wanted money for a fix I think- shaky altered and dilated)

There are people who are really just hard up, but I think there are waaay more just plain bastards these days.

If a guy was crashing from a withdrawal to the point of shaking, that could actually be as life or death as requesting money because of starving. Hope he went to the hospital after or someone picked him up.

I figure that if someone ever asks me for money, it's because they need it. The guy who quit his job and earns more panhandling obviously still needs the money. I also posit that because of my saving tendencies, they also need the money more than I do. If they are violent or persistent, that might be a sign of particular need. I do not consider drugs, bad habits, or addictions a factor.

I derive no satisfaction from this, as I derive no satisfaction from anything. More often it tends to be an annoyance as I never carry much money on my person, and so giving away money means I don't eat that day. This does not lessen the obligation.

FREMDFIRMA

Way I see it, if believing they've sold me some bullshit story is what it takes for them to keep their pride, to make it through the day, it's no skin off my back to LET them believe this, since if I chose to help em I woulda done it anyways.

Remember, the first person society teaches you to lie to, is yourself.
Which is what some of them are doing - a lot of street folk have mental issues, and the situation surely makes them worse.

Of course, in one case the bullshit story isn't needed, I keep a spare sampler bottle of Rum on me for emergencies (as in if I need to perform physical activity which might otherwise disable me with pain) and on the rare occasion I run into someone who needs such a particular fix I just "cut out the middleman" and hand it off to them - fuck morality, I myself have had days I'd not have gotten through without a little help, yanno.

Can't help everybody, can't save everybody, and some you shouldn't oughta try to - but little things here and there, shit... that's just being human, innit ?

As record low temperatures have already set in, east Placerville
& regions higher up feel like Alaska ... I sure hope there ain't
any little kids out in this gross failure of society.

Placerville’s Homeless Running Out Of Places Where They Can Stay Warm
http://sacramento.cbslocal.com/2013/12/02/214096/

PLACERVILLE (CBS13) – They were forced out of their homeless camp
when it shut down. Now former residents of Placerville’s Hangtown
Haven are looking for places to stay warm.

A small shelter is already at capacity and with cold temperatures on
the way, there could be twice as many people coming here to seek shelter.

About 40 people were dropped off by bus today at a shelter in El Dorado
County looking for a place to stay warm.

“Last year at this time there was only 18 to 20 people,” said Kenneth,
a volunteer.

“This is not one of our bigger facilities, so we’re definitely going
to have to pack in here tonight,” said Dallas Privett, who’s staying
at a shelter.

Each person scrambles to find some space to sleep in every room and
every corner of this building.

... And with freezing temperatures on the way, volunteers are worried
there won’t be enough room.

... “We have churches, two churches that are doing double nights only
because we can’t get somebody to host,” he said.

But some of these people worry one day soon, they’ll be turned away
and left out in the cold.

The churches say they are working with the county, but at this point
no permanent solution has been decided on.

So far, five churches in the county are helping to house the homeless.
Volunteers help to coordinate, feed and keep watch.
