Hey Jongs. You got anything to add to the thread about how your hero Rand Paul is a plagiarist? Or the one where the 60 minutes story about Bengazi is being retracted with apologies?

No?

It seems like he now has to pay more for much better coverage, and earns too much to qualify for the subsidies that will help most people upgrade to these new plans.

If you're moderately rich and healthy, and are buying bare-bones health insurance, expect to pay more due to Obamacare.

It's not personal. It's just war.

Better coverage ? That's a laugh. Time will tell.

But the greater points, Obama lied, knowingly, and who the HELL is the govt to FORCE us to buy a Range Rover when a Ford Fiesta is just fine ?

From Ezra Klein, Auraptor's favourite Obamacare detractor:

Quote:

Last night, NBC's Chuck Todd asked President Obama about the people losing their health insurance despite his promise that "anyone who likes their plan can keep it." (See the video and read the transcript here.)
"I am sorry that they are finding themselves in this situation based on assurances they got from me," Obama replied.

The answer is a bit of a dodge. People aren't finding themselves in this situation based on the president's promises. They're finding themselves in this situation based on his policy. And Obama isn't apologizing for the policy.

"Before the law was passed, a lot of these plans, people thought they had insurance coverage," he said. "And then they'd find out that they had huge out of pocket expenses. Or women were being charged more than men. If you had preexisting conditions, you just couldn't get it at all."

Obama was wrong to promise that everyone who liked their insurance could keep it. For a small minority of Americans, that flatly isn't true. But the real sin would've been leaving the individual insurance market alone.
The individual market -- which serves five percent of the population, and which is where the disruptions are happening -- is a horror show. It's a market where healthy people benefit from systematic discrimination against the sick, where young people benefit from systematic discrimination against the old, where men benefit from systematic discrimination against women, and where insurers benefit from systematic discrimination against the uninformed.

The result, all too often, is a market where the people who need insurance most can't get it, and the people who do get insurance find it doesn't cover them when it's most necessary. All that is why the individual market shows much lower levels of satisfaction than, well, every other insurance market:

Those numbers, of course, don't include the people who couldn't get insurance because they were deemed too sick. Consumer Reports put it unusually bluntly:

"Individual insurance is a nightmare for consumers: more costly than the equivalent job-based coverage, and for those in less-than-perfect health, unaffordable at best and unavailable at worst. Moreover, the lack of effective consumer protections in most states allows insurers to sell plans with ‘affordable’ premiums whose skimpy coverage can leave people who get very sick with the added burden of ruinous medical debt."

Jonathan Cohn puts a human face on it:

"One from my files was about a South Floridian mother of two named Jacqueline Reuss. She had what she thought was a comprehensive policy, but it didn't cover the tests her doctors ordered when they found a growth and feared it was ovarian cancer. The reason? Her insurer decided, belatedly, that a previous episode of “dysfunctional uterine bleeding”—basically, an irregular menstrual period—was a pre-existing condition that disqualified her from coverage for future gynecological problems. She was fine medically. The growth was benign. But she had a $15,000 bill (on top of her other medical expenses) and no way to get new insurance."

This is a market that desperately needs to be fixed. And Obamacare goes a way toward fixing it. It basically makes the individual market more like the group markets. That means that the sick don't get charged more than the well, and the old aren't charged more than three times as much as the young, and women aren't charged more than men, and insurance plans that don't actually cover you when you get sick no longer exist. But the transition disrupts today's arrangements.

(Interestingly, recent Republican plans have focused on disrupting the employer market by ending, limiting, or restructuring the tax exclusion for employer-based plans. There's an extremely good case to be made that that needs to be done, but it means much more disruption for a much larger number of people. Obamacare's focus on disrupting the individual market -- and only the individual market -- is a more modest approach to health-care reform.)

There's been an outpouring of sympathy for the people in the individual market who will see their plans changed. As well there should be. Some of them will be better off, but some won't be.

But, worryingly, the impassioned defense of the beneficiaries of the status quo isn't leavened with sympathy for the people suffering now. The people who can't buy health insurance for any price, or can't get it at a price they can afford, or do get it only to find themselves bankrupted by medical expenses anyway have been left out of the sudden outpouring of concern.

If people have a better way to fix the individual market -- one that has no losers -- then it's time for them to propose it. But it's very strange to sympathize with the people who've benefited from the noxious practices of the individual market while dismissing the sick people who've been victimized by it.

Obama is rightly taking flack for making a promise he wasn't going to keep, and he's right to apologize for it. But he shouldn't apologize for blowing up the individual market. It needed to be done.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Well, unfortunately none of it holds up to actual inspection.

First, Dylan Ratigan is not an "MSNBC Anchor", to start with. He left MSNBC back in MAY to become a hydroponic greenhouse farmer. http://www.mnn.com/money/sustainable-business-practices/stories/msnbc-
anchor-dylan-ratigan-gives-up-fame-and-fortune-to
#

Second:
Quote:

Dylan Ratigan seemed like the next candidate to become the face of the "I liked my plan and I lost it" movement on Friday. He tweeted that his $170-a-month catastrophic health insurance plan had been cancelled.

It's worth pointing out that he can find a plan for less that $600 a month. Ratigan lives in California, and Covered California has a great shop-and-compare tool. A 41-year-old living in San Diego County (where his farm is located) can easily find a Bronze Plan for about $70 a month more than what Ratigan is paying now.

Insurers are currently steering customers towards their more expensive plans, which, given how much pricer $600 is compared to all the available plans, seems like a strong possibility in this case. http://www.theatlanticwire.com/politics/2013/11/former-msnbc-host-dyla
n-ratigan-lost-his-healthcare-thanks-obama/71413/
]

In other words, the $600 he's talking about may well be what his PREVIOUS INSURER is now offering as a replacement for his plan, NOT what is actually available to him.

Third, Ratigan's argument all along has been that the ACA "doesn't break up insurance monopolies or restructure the health insurance industry'--in other words, he's for single payor, like many of us. You can read his rant on that at http://www.dylanratigan.com/health/.

He was making a million dollars a year, so he's not eligible for any subsidies. What he had was a "catastrophic health policy"--it don't cover shit. This is a guy who could afford to pay for most everything out of pocket, unlike most of us.

Also:
Quote:

Ratigan doesn’t say where he got his quote, but according to the website, an Orange County resident his age can get a Bronze plan for $380 a month, or a cool $2650 a year less than the rate he tweeted.

According to Covered California, that $600 a month could net a Platinum plan. Ratigan doesn’t go into detail about his old plan, except to repeatedly emphasize how very bare-bones it was. Surely, Ratigan would never knowingly try to compare a pre-Obamacare catastrophic plan with a Platinum plan. That would be dishonest. http://www.mediaite.com/online/how-millionaire-greedy-bastards-author-
dylan-ratigan-can-save-2600-on-health-insurance/

So he's either claiming (lying) that the only thing available to him is what his previous insurer suggested, comparing a "catastrophic health policy" with a "Premium plan", or ignoring completely the health-insurance market under the ACA in California, where he lives. No wonder he's the new conservative hero--only be careful if he starts opening his mouth about how he thinks we SHOULD have handled health insurance, righties!

I ssume Rap got this "information" from O'Reilly, who made a big deal out of it without ever mentioning a word of the truth. Idiot conservatives like Rap are eating it up.

See how easy it is if you just ignore the facts? Nice try, tho'.

Only if you buy new, which in 18 years of driving I've never done.

The most beautiful car I ever owned was a relic that came off the assembly line the year before I was born.

It weighed nearly 3 tons. It was solid metal. It was a car, yet it had a larger back seat than a lot of kids can say they have for a bed at night. It had an MPG of about 8. It DID have seat belts, but although it had wipers, it didn't have any discharge system for wiper fluid.

"WAKE UP CALL"

When I was "young" enough for the government to care, I had good insurance and a father making decent middle-income money.

My parents were lucky. White, Middle-Income people at the right place at the right time. Their old jobs can be done by Camel Jockeys in India for 1/5th the price now.

Bottom line....

If somehow you can afford to buy a new car with the highest 5-star family rating, chances are you don't have a family to care for.

... Ratigan was a propagandist on MSNBC who told his audience for years how great Obamacare was gonna be. He made a lot of money. When he left MSNBC he could have bought any healthcare plan he wanted.

... Now he bitches to the world that the plan he did decide to buy was cancelled due to Obamacare, and he tells everyone the cost difference, and he throws in a sarcastic dig at Obama. Again, his words, not AURaptor's or anyone elses.

That is what's known as an old-fashioned chicken-coming-home-to roost story of irony and comeuppance if ever there was one.

No wonder the MSNBC regurgitators here are desperate to put their own spin and interpretation on his tweet. They cannot handle even one simple dose of reality to invade their liberal dome of delusion.

Here it is again. Maybe if they read it instead of pissing into the wind over it they'll get it. But I doubt it.

Truly pathetic. There's no pretzel twisting; the only way you can even imagine that is if you are willing to TOTALLY IGNORE all the facts. I guess you are. You're happy as a clam to ignore that Ratigan compared a bare-bones "catastrophic insurance" policy with a comprehensive "platinum" policy and LIE blatantly about what was available to him, because it fits your talking point. Gotcha.

And no, "Ratigan was a propagandist on MSNBC who told his audience for years how great Obamacare was gonna be." Far from it, Ratigan was NEVER a proponent of the ACA. He was big on "hot spotting", and he wrote a lot of material on it. In his own words: "According to data from the CIA, America ranks 50th in life expectancy, behind countries such as Greece, Portugal and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Our health care outcomes are comparable to countries such as Chile. Any country that cannot take care of its people when they get sick will collapse – and that’s the risk of non-engagement on this issue."

He was disgusted with our health care system, but was in favor of something MORE than what Obamacare provided, which he saw as nothing more than a gimme for the insurance companies, which it was, which was all that it COULD be and the only thing we could get to start with.

He wrote "we must ask if our government really does work for the taxpayers and the well-intentioned doctors and hospitals who care for them? Or do they work for the entrenched insurers, employers that wish to stifle employee competition, employee benefit Management companies and unions that make billions or wield their power based on the current broken system and are lobbying hard to keep it that way?"

He was always quite vocal about it. I didn't like him and only watched him once or twice, but even that was enough for me to recognize where he stood. To call him an Obamabot is the height of disingenuity. Not surprisingly, coming from your bias.

I get it, Niki.

It's like saying that he bought a Volkswagen Beetle just to get to work and back, and now, because of Obamacare, he's forced to buy a Mercedes Benz (Janis Joplin, please don't look directly into the sunlight).

But he doesn't say how the VW Bug has a squirrel on a treadmill under the hood, and he could well afford a Benz or Caddy without breaking a sweat. How dare he compare himself to simple folk who work for a living. His bare-bones policy probably covers little, and probably has a huge deductible, and no hospital stay.

I once bought insurance like that and come to find out that it didn't cover drugs and had a $300 deductible for doctor's office visits. I dumped it faster than Rappy wants to marry a gay man (I kill me ;-)

It is dishonest journalism because they give half of the story, the one that suits their agenda - Hate and Obstruct Obama. I read somewhere that the Fox News stories of people coming on and claiming that they lost their insurance for a higher priced policy, were debunked by an independent journalist.

Besides, these private insurance companies are exploiting their customer base. They, in hopes that they will stay loyal customers, raise the prices and sit back and wait. Those that hate Obama so much, will purchase the new policies just to prove a point, although a stupid move on their part, the insurers laugh all the way to the bank. They are counting on it. Sneaky fucks. And tell me you suddenly trust the greedy insurance companies - with their fine print and addendums. It's the old shell game, ladies and germs.
(that last message is meant for Rap and friends).

He has a bare bones plan that pays for little and he's talking about the Platinum level health insurance under the ACA, which is a comprehensive plan that covers much. Very deceitful.

For the uninitiated, it's like comparing apples and oranges, both are fruit..........you get the idea; right Rap, Jongsie!

You know what I say, let those that want to keep the Catastrophe coverage, keep it. When that day arrives they will have to deal with huge out of pocket expense.

But this guy is a cheap bastard, he could get better coverage and he can afford it, unlike countless working stiffs who don't see the forest for the trees.

Congress approves billions for farm subsidies, many that are owned by members (a conflict of interest if you ask me), yet would begrudge millions of women and children affordable health coverage. The rich get richer.

Not on any regular basis. But that's not the point. YOU said that their rep as being cheerleader for the administration , that 'everyone knows' which way they slant the news can't be consistent with their low viewership numbers.

I say that rep is solid, and well earned. Whether I watch it with great regularity or not. One does not necessarily have to do w/ the other. It's not solely MY opinion here that's in question.

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

No, he didn't. Not anywhere here. So, is this another example of you not bothering with facts?

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Shiny, it's even worse than that. With those "twelve words", he lied through his teeth. His bare-bones policy has been cancelled; THAT insurer told him he could get a policy for $600. The fact is that he DOESN'T have to get a Platinum policy, on our own state's insurance site, which is where he should have gone, he could get a MUCH cheaper plan OR he could get a Platinum plan for LESS than $600. So it's just a bald-faced lie any way you look at it.

Ratigan was a proponent of letting people keep those catastrophic plans all along, which is understandable for him because he can afford anything LESS than catastrophic injury or illness. But many, many people would get that who have it now, and, again, WE would end up bailing them out when catastrophe hit, or even in many cases, when expenses beyond what they could incur hit, after they lost their savings, house, etc. or when they lost their job.

No, I said you had no direct knowledge of how they slant the new.

Thing is if someone does not watch they are basing their opinion on second hand knowledge. Like you do all the time, what ever the right wing media tell you, you believe.

In other words, the $600 he's talking about may well be what his PREVIOUS INSURER is now offering as a replacement for his plan, NOT what is actually available to him.

Apples and oranges.

The guy had catastrophic insurance. He was willing to pay for most medical care out-of-pocket and just have insurance for hospital stays and the like. The ACA is now forcing him to buy a more comprehensive policy that meets all the ACA requirements, since only folks under 30 or who have a hardship exemption can now buy catastrophic insurance. http://www.healthinsurance.org/faqs/what-is-the-acas-catastrophic-plan

In any case, your cite notes the cheapest insurance he can get is $70.00 more a month than his previous policy, so that's a 30% increase for insurance he doesn't want.

Still far from the $600 he stated.

Plus it is not apples and oranges. He is going to move from a plan that covers very little to one that covers much, much more. Easy direct comparison.
