Put on your thinking caps. You don't have to "win" an election in order to influence it. If either party sees that your third-party candidate is pulling a significant number of votes, they'll modify their message. The best time to do this is during the primaries, when you can potentially bring in a more genuine representative over an a bought and paid for corporate-shill. VOTE THIRD PARTY.

When it comes to the final election, vote strategically. If your state/ Congressional District/ state legislative district/ city council is a lock either way, VOTE THIRD PARTY. Your vote won't change the outcome for the two major parties, but what it WILL do is increase the counted numbers for your third party- maybe it will go from 1% to 5%. At 5%, the two major parties sit up and take notice, I guarantee it.

Knowing how the leftish-of-centrists here feel about a number of major issues, out of the plethora of alternate parties on many tickets, I'd recommend the Green Party. They fielded a very credible candidate last Presidential election, whereas the Peace and Freedom Party fielded Roseanne Barr. FWIW I have nothing against Roseanne Barr as an actress and personality, but she's not a thoughtful candidate.
