Hey, Ive been in a firefight before! Well, I was in a fire. Actually, I was fired from a fry-cook opportunity.

The story doesn't say, but I wonder if she was given the choice to pay $600.00 (or more) USD and then be allowed to enter the US.

There is a US Entry Waiver. If you have ever been arrested or have any kind of "undesirable" record, you apply for a entry waiver with a long list of steps and fees included. At the end, if you pay the fee, the USA will "pardon" you for 6 months or a year or just for the duration of your trip.

The USA does not recognize a pardon issued by Canada or another country, it has to issue its own pardon and it doesn't matter how old the record is either, the USA must issue a pardon. I know a fire fighter who got a DUI in 1991 who was pardoned in Canada and was refused entry to the USA unless he "paid the waiver fee".

A month or two ago a convicted pedophile escaped from a psych ward here and crossed over into the USA. He got across because he wasn't a criminal in the USA and he paid the Waiver Fee to the USA customs agent at the border. The police here said they are not going to go through any long, expensive process to get him back and if the USA wants him they can have him.

It isn't about security or safety, because they will let whomever into the country if the fee is paid - its about getting money.

But I thought the point was that a) her hospitalization for depression several years ago isn't an official reason not to enter the country, (or is it??) and b) how on earth does that border guard even have that information?

I think it's kind of disturbing.

Nothing "kind of" about it.

I wouldn't call this a people problem though, it's a government problem. Yet another over-reach of the US police state.

Didn't you know, Canada is a hot bed of terrorists and criminals whose only reason for existing is to allow terrorists to enter Canada so they can sneak across into the USA and cause havok.
After 9/11 the USA said flat out that unless they had access to Canadian records they would pretty much close the border and make it a bureaucratic nightmare to cross the border from Canada to the USA. In fact, they did do this for a few weeks and it caused billions as they held up semis and trains from crossing the border while they conducted record checks to make sure no terrorists were getting into the USA.

NSA confiscated Canadian medical records being held by companies in the USA who provide digital data storage services (clouds) under contract. My province passed a law so no medical (or any other) records are stored in the USA. The NSA getting its hands on medical records for everyone in British Columbia is the source of a lawsuit because the government has the responsibility to not let anyone have access to medical records without express permission of the individual. NSA took the records that were being stored in the USA by warrant even after the company holding the records fought it in court in the USA. Obviously medical records are a safety and security concern to the USA.

Whoah, whoah, whoah there, hang on just a minute. You're speakin about BARRY'S transparent administration and all now...not W's , right ?

I know, not a reflection of him or any President. Just , as noted , a tyrannical govt.

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen

Unless the gov is officially been replaced by actual robots....

I just can't imagine a bastard who could look this woman in the face and say "Sorry, we can't let you go on vacation because you were depressed last year because you will be stuck in a wheelchair THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, and we're really just hoping this will push you completely over the edge"

I'd be interested in knowing more details of her 2012 hospitalization for depression. If she was involuntarily committed, or was considered a danger to herself or others (she did attempt suicide in 2001, after all), there might be reason to consider her a risk.

Yeah, but if we keep people from traveling FOREVER because of past issues with depression the airlines would be out of business...

While it's possible that she was committed involuntarily, I find it highly unlikely, since acute depression is often best treated in-hospital, the vast majority of people who undergo such treatment do it on purpose - they realize they need help - and this woman had written publicly about her struggle with this disease, so presumably has some thorough self-awareness in that regard, as well as interest in treatment.

Besides, would she make that kind of fuss in the press if she HAD been hospitalized against her will for being a danger, exactly the reason she was refused entry? I hiiiighly doubt it.

I find it extremely unlikely that she could credibly be considered a risk. It's an abuse of information that the border guard had no business knowing.

Exactly the response I predicted.

As has been explained to you on multiple occasions, the blind worship of a leader is what you did with W, not what the rest of us do with O. We can be and frequently have been critical.

As has also been explained to you, the abuse of power went through the roof during W and while you were busy defending and praising, the rest of us TOLD you that the cat wouldn't be going back in the bag and you wouldn't like it so much when the other party came to power.

Now, I am not going any further in this discussion with you because it's already been done and obviously nothing got through to you and nothing ever will.

That's the point that geezer is avoiding. The guard had no business knowing this information. I want to know how he got it. So now the FSA is hacking foreign medical records and creating "danger" lists from that? It's truly out of control.

Apparently the U.S. and Canada have been sharing such information for some time, per this article.

-s-entry-1.1034903

And, as the next article shows, Canada has been blocking the entry of U.S. citizens as well.

Oh, I thought this would be a clip of the lady at the Black Friday deals with a baby getting trampled on endless loop.

There's many reasons to not like people, really... Why limit yourself to just one?

As for TSA and Homeland Security Agents having access to medical information and bribes - just as predicted. I feel safer, do you feel safer? Security theatre at it's finest.

Also not so surprised to hear that other nations have started adopting the same policy. Nice to know that the US leads the way for the rest of the world in terms of setting new standards for bureaucracy and invasive douchebaggery. Insert Ben Franklin quote about security and liberty here.

You can't blame Obama for the police state. That was all on Bush.

You can blame him for not doing anything to alter it, though. He's not the radical commie Muslim socialist Nazi the teanderthals say he is. He's a center-right Democrat.
