Marry girls when they're '15 or 16,' said 'Duck Dynasty' star Phil Robertson

Oops, didn't get the link. Back in a few to post one, if you need it.

But seriously, how much is needed? Maybe it will stick this time?

E-T-A: here's a link. There's more there, too.

In most states if you're within two years of the person if they're below the age of consent they let it slide. Although I think most states do have a lower limit on an age for marriage. I want to say 14 for most states, but I'm more guessing than I actually know.

The concern of course is imbalance of power in the relationship and abuse, which becomes an issue with large age differences and a disparity in wealth and very young persons.

You're a bit late on the uptake, NewOld...I posted this days ago, down in the "A&E Caves" thread:
Quote:

This new video is simply unbelievable. Does this guy forget that this is a world where everything is recorded? In the video above Phil Robertson says the following in a rather disturbing monologue.
Quote:

“Now that’s a woman. They got to where they’re hard to find. Mainly because these boys are waiting 'til they’re twenty years old before they marry them. Look, you wait 'til they get to be twenty years old and the only picking that’s going to take place is your pocket. You got to marry these girls when they’re about fifteen or sixteen and they’ll pick your ducks.”

Quote:

Robertson is no stranger to doing just that. He began dating his wife Marsha when she was fourteen and he a legal adult. They married two years later when she was just sixteen. The age of consent in Louisiana is seventeen years old, and it is a crime for anyone regardless of age to engage in sexual relations with a fourteen year old. If a person is under seventeen, it is illegal for anyone more than two years older to have sex with them. No matter what, it is likely that Robertson broke at least one law. ( http://joemygod.blogspot.com/2013/12/phil-robertson-in-2009-men-should
-marry.html)
]

Oh, yeah, real paragon of religious virtue:
Quote:

For Phil, seven years between the ages of 21 and 28 were like sliding down a muddy river bank. He drank too much whiskey, ran wild, smoked marijuana, popped pills and hunted ducks, leaving his wife, affectionately called “Miss Kay,” to raise their three sons alone. http://www.southeastoutlook.org/news/features/article_8bea6dc0-051c-11
e3-9628-0019bb30f31a.html

Then, of course, after throwing said wife and kids out because she'd become a “holy roller, a Bible thumper and goody two shoes", he found religion...and is now the paragon saint of right-wing conservatives.

The fun is just getting started...I'm so happy for all our right wingers, this is just the kind of guy they no doubt want us all to emulate!

Byte , there's a couple of states down in the Old South where the age of consent was as low as 13 only a few years ago-- Arkansas and Alabama, I think. Real bastions of modern enlightened civilization. Quite a few where it's 15 or 16, but most states it's 18, and has been since the 1940's at least.

Yeah, I'm waiting to see if anyone picks up on it...gotta be damned embarrassing for A&E; what he said initially, they could let pass, but if this gets picked up, how're they gonna handle it? More fools they...

I'm also waiting for someone, anyone, to ask all his very-vocal supporters what they think of him now...if anyone ever will...

The age of consent is, bizarrely, often waived in the case of marriage. Age of consent applies mostly to sexual activity.

There are limits on the ages that a person can marry, which normally is the age of consent, but which has exceptions which allows for marriage at as low as 16. Such as, in the case of parental or judicial agreement, if one of the two is pregnant (generally the younger person), if the young girl has already HAD a child out of marriage, and so on.

Well, it's hit main-stream media...CNN website's main story:
Quote:

Marry girls when they're '15 or 16,' said 'Duck Dynasty' star Phil Robertson

(HLNtv.com) -- "Duck Dynasty" star Phil Robertson is ruffling feathers again, this time for comments he made years ago about how girls should marry when they're still teenagers.

"They got to where they're getting hard to find, mainly because these boys are waiting 'til they get to be about 20 years old before they marry 'em," Robertson says in a video clip that resurfaced Monday. "Look, you wait 'til they get to be 20 years old, the only picking that's going to take place is your pocket. You got to marry these girls when they are about 15 or 16. They'll pick your ducks."

In the video, Robertson is recounting an anecdote at a speaking engagement. He describes the story as "river rat counseling" he was giving to a "boy" of unknown age. Robertson is four years older than his wife, Kay, whom he married when she was 16 years old, according to A&E's website.

The reality show patriarch was speaking at a Georgia Sportsmen Ministry event when he recounted this advice, according to the video's description. The clip was originally posted in 2009 by YouTube user wakemakerducks, which is also the name of Robertson's company. It was posted again to YouTube on Monday.

In the newly resurfaced footage, Robertson also lists other qualities he advised the boy to look for in a future wife.

"Make sure that she can cook a meal. You need to eat some meals that she cooks, check that out. Make sure she carries her Bible. That'll save you a lot of trouble down the road," he said.

HLN has reached out to the "Duck Dynasty" family for comment but has yet to hear back. http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/31/showbiz/duck-dynasty-phil-robertson-comm

To address Byte's remarks more specifically, per Wikipedia, in the U.S.:
Quote:

Varies by state, but generally 18, with two exceptions: 19 in Nebraska and 21 in Mississippi. Most states, however, allow minors below 18 to marry (generally they have to be at least 16 but sometimes lower) with parental and/or judicial consent. Some states allow female minors below 18 to marry without parental or judicial consent, if she is pregnant. Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, and Oklahoma allow pregnant teens or teens who have already had a child to get married without parental consent. In Florida, Kentucky, and Oklahoma, however, the young couple must have authorization from a court. Maryland requires that the minor be at least sixteen. Even with parental approval, many states will require court approval when a person is 16 years of age or less. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marriageable_age

It lists each state and gives references.

...aaand there's more video surfacing:
Quote:

The controversy surrounding Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson has focused mainly on his comments about homosexuality and bestiality, and to a lesser degree, his assertion that black people in the Jim Crow South were happier, but in the GQ interview that started it all, Robertson also equated Muslims with Nazis. Like his other controversial statements, this is nothing new for Robertson, who explained to an Arkansas congregation, in 2008, what would “do in the Muslims,” as well as “the Chinese,” and that Muslims are “famous for murder.”

In the middle of his speech before the Hillsboro Church of Christ in El Dorado, AR, Robertson asked “What will do the Muslims (pronounced “Moose-limbs”) in?”

Brandishing his Bible, Robertson answered “Violations of the law, that’s what’ll do ‘em in.”

“What will do the Chinese in, if they don’t turn to Jesus?” Robertson asked, then answered “One violation.”

Later in the speech, Robertson talked about those who are “controlled by the evil one.”

“That’s why they run jet aircraft into buildings, because they’re under control of the evil one, that’s why they rob and kidnap and rape and pillage, because they’re under control of the evil one. That’s why they murder, from the Nazis, to the Shintoists, to the communists to this latest crop!”

“You say ‘Why do they murder, why do they hate us?!” Robertson bellowed, slapping the podium. “Because all of them, those four groups, 80 years of history, they all want to conquer the world, they all rejected Jesus, and they’re all famous for murder. Nazis, Shintoists, communists, and the Muhammadists.”

In case anyone thought he was referring only to some bad apples, Robertson added “Every one of them, the same way.” http://www.mediaite.com/online/video-phil-robertson-explains-what-will
-do-the-muslims-in-and-the-chinese/

I'm sure all the righties who've been holding him up as a paragon of free speech are just proud as punch, and getting moreso daily! I can think of at least one who agrees with him about Mooslimbs, "every one of them."

Here's one...

Girl declared brain dead remains on life support

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A 13-year-old California girl declared brain dead after tonsil surgery remained on life support Tuesday after a state judge gave her family at least another week to find a place to move her.

Doctors at Children's Hospital Oakland want to take Jahi McMath off the machines that are keeping her body functioning, saying she will never recover. Her family wants to continue life support, saying they have hope she will still pull through.

Jahi's mother, Nailah Winkfield, hailed the judge's decision to give them until Jan. 7 before allowing the hospital to withdraw life support as an answer to her prayers and a sign that she has been right to keep fighting for the teen.

With television cameras clustered outside the hospital, the family maintained a vigil as the Monday deadline approached.

When Winkfield heard of the judge's decision to push back the deadline, she wept and hugged relatives outside the hospital.

"Who wants to know the date and the time their child would die?" Winkfield said. "I don't care what anyone has to say about what I'm doing. ... I have to do what is right for me and for Jahi."

http://news.yahoo.com/girl-declared-brain-dead-remains-life-support-17

Sad case. Girl, 13, was over weight. She had sleep apnea. But instead of trying to get her to lose weight, and possibly give some relief that way, a complicated surgery was performed instead. Basically, 3 procedures taking place at once.

It didn't go well. Now she's brain dead, and the family has taken their 'case' to the public, via the media.

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen

You don't have all the info...The girl was on medication for a condition that was making her overweight, made worse by her sleep apnea. Sometimes fat itself is an indicator that something is wrong, not that being fat itself IS the problem...And the hospital was damn negligent. The mother alerted them to all the blood, and they did NOTHING. She went into cardiac arrest and it took precious minutes just to get a nurse's attention and not to mention SHE WAS IN A HOSPITAL fer crissakes and they couldn't help her at all. I hope they sue and get all they are entitled to. If my kid had died after her surgery, someone would've had to shoot me until I died to pry my hands off the good docs neck! This poor kid was let down by soooo many people....

The level of attention paid is dictated by what people are interested in. Clearly more people were interested in Duck Dynasty story. It makes sense, has to do with religion, and the top grossing show on TV. Not to mention retailers.

The reason A&E caved is because there are enough people more concerned about their favorite show than they are about Phil spewing stupidity. In the end A&E caved because it was the best thing to do for their bottom line.

The situation is, they're so driven by what they hate they can't help running headlong into other, opposing hates. Are they supposed to be god-fearing and righteous in their hate of moose-limbs, chinee, and atheists (and libruls)? Only other thing I can think to do is go to your local hunting store; tell the clerk you want to buy a duck decoy; ask what brand they got: and if they say His, say no thanks. But a competing brand if you can. The take it everywhere you can, blow it whenever; when asked why, explain that you support gay rights and it's not one of Phil's.
