Democratic leaders in the Senate are planning to fast-track legislation to extend unemployment insurance, a move that would provide a lifeline to more than a million jobless Americans who lost their benefits five days ago.

The bipartisan bill provides a three-month extension the federal benefits program, a temporary fix designed to allow Congress to work on a solution for the long-term unemployed, who have seen their support vanish.

The benefits, which apply to people who are unemployed for longer than six months, were left to expire on Saturday after a bipartisan budget deal on federal spending for the next two years failed to include a reauthorization of the program.

“Failing to extend emergency unemployment insurance through 2014 will negatively impact 14 million Americans – the 4.9 million workers who will see unemployment insurance cut off and the approximately 9 million additional family members they are supporting,” Sperling said. “But if Congress does the right thing and acts to extend emergency unemployment benefits through 2014, it is estimated to lead to 200,000 jobs and a fifth of a point of additional economic growth.”

The bill extending the program for three months – which would be applied retroactively, reimbursing those who lost benefits over the last week – is authored by senators from the two states with the highest unemployment rates: Jack Reed, a Democrat from Rhode Island, and Dean Heller, a Republican from Nevada. I know nobody's posted about long-term unemployment running out this week, but did you know:
Quote:

Right before they left for the holidays, Republicans in the House of Representatives left a lump of coal in the stockings of 1.3 million Americans. On Saturday, long-term unemployment benefits for those struggling Americans expired, leaving them and their families to face the continuing fallout of the recession with nowhere to turn for assistance.

While many have heard about the disastrous impact this will have on 1.3 million people and our entire economy, few are aware that a bipartisan solution was at hand. Republicans could have avoided this latest manufactured crisis by including the extension of unemployment benefits in the recently enacted budget and paying for it by ending unnecessary corporate welfare to big agribusiness companies. But Rep. Paul Ryan, leading the Republicans in the budget negotiations, refused. http://www.realclearpolitics.com/2014/01/02/republicans_vs_the_unemplo
yed_322744.html
]

There was a vote to reconsider extending unemployment insurance during debate on the rule. Every single Democrat voted to allow a three month extension of benefits to come to the floor -- yet only one solitary Republican was willing to cross the aisle to extend these critical benefits.

Republicans justified their position with a perverse logic -- that it builds character for people to go hungry and taking these benefits away will help people find work. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that because these benefits are injected directly into our economy, a failure to extend long-term unemployment benefits will mean the loss of 200,000 jobs. That means families looking for work will have fewer jobs to compete for and no benefits on which to fall back. The fact of the matter is that people receiving unemployment insurance, including 20,000 veterans, want to work and are actively looking for a job.

Republicans also argue that the economy has recovered sufficiently so that we can cut off benefits for the long-term unemployed. A recent study ( http://blogs.wsj.com/economics/2013/09/10/some-95-of-2009-2012-income-
gains-went-to-wealthiest-1
/) showed that 95 percent of the economic gains made from 2009-2012, during the heart of the recovery, went to the wealthiest 1 percent while everyone else shared 5 percent of the gains.

Go, Republicans!

Wait... LOST benefits ?

99 weeks isn't enough in Obama's economy ?

26 weeks use to be the norm. The Recovery and Reinvestment Act added 33 ADDITIONAL weeks.

Good, if people don't have money to buy food it hurts them and the economy. Of course the GOP knows this, they just don't care and want the economy to stay slumping while they blame Obama.

Of course: as has been their plan from the day he was elected. It may have taken me a couple of years to accept they could actually work toward the worsening of our economy in the hopes it would bring them power, but when it didn't, I realized that's what they'll CONTINUE to do, in the hopes it brings them power next time...

Votes to repeal Obamacare: 37
Jobs bills: 0

WTF is a " jobs bill " anyways ? It's more federal welfare.Good frelling god, you guys are such willing wards of the STATE.

The proper function of the govt is to stay the hell out of the way, lessen the burden of hiring new employees, not make it worse. ObamaCare, jacking up the min wage, will only HURT the economy, not make it better.

Making broke people even more broke isn't going to help them find jobs.

This is the mentality of entitled pricks who think people are just lazy, when in fact there simply aren't enough jobs to go around. Things are recovering, but slowly (no thanks to Republicans).

It's all part of the ALEC plan to cheapen labor. They WANT high unemployment, and a desperate (formerly) middle class willing to work more for less.

The libertarian ideal.

I have no problem with government being pro-business as long as business is pro-worker. Thing is that is not happening. Right now we are in a downward spiral if falling wages which means prices have to stay low for people to be able to afford things, which forces employees to cut cost...like wages. At this point the only way out is for government to give a big "fuck you" to CEOs and shareholders and force them to pay employees more and cut their profits and dividends.

I do not fear God, I fear the ignorance of man.

Eloquently put, Nick, and right on point. I don't see government doing that, and I hate the idea that they even SHOULD. I don't see the Swiss answer as a viable one.

So how does one stop the cycle of CEOs, etc., getting so exorbitantly MANY times as much as employees, which is what's ripping everyone off? As long as they can get away with it, how do you turn it around, that's what I can't figure out. I think it will get a lot worse before it gets better, unfortunately....

See also the push to do away with minimum wage laws, overtime pay for hourly workers, the 40-hour work week, child labor laws, etc.

Also, there is no evidence that raising the minimum wage in any way hurts the economy.

The entitlement mentality is one of thinking the STATE will take care of you, so there's no need for you to be self reliant.

Better to work for less than not work at all and get a check from those who ARE working ( The govt doesn't have any $ that it doesn't take from those who earn )

Honestly, I wish I didn't get those benefits for so long. I used to make nearly $400 a week on unemployment. It was a Far Cry away from the $800 a week after taxes I used to make, but I was able to get that "free money" for over 1 1/2 years. I made more on unemployment benefits than most people I know make at their jobs. I was able to save over $13k of that and use it towards my house.....

Right now, I'm lucky if I make $400 bucks in two weeks, and nobody is hiring anybody for anything in my line of work that doesn't have at least a bachelors degree. Maybe if I had gotten a job a month or so after I was laid off I would have been alright and been able to explain away a few weeks of down-time and the lay-off, but with 3 years under my un-employed/under-employed belt, nobody is going to hire me for anything even close to my capabilities when the bulk of my last 5 years of experience is retail and home improvement jobs.

I know there are some horrific examples of why this benefit should be extended, but I feel that if somebody that is as responsible with money as I am took advantage of it, there is 1,000 people who feel they're entitled and will just sit around doing nothing and watching the checks come in. At least I saved most of that money and put it to good use. 21 year old me would have spent it all on import booze, designer drugs and pussy.

Yeah, ElvisC, it's a pretty concerted effort on many fronts...and don't forget killing the unions, the only way workers GOT overtime pay, the 40-hour work week, child labor laws, etc.

I dunno...

I just paid my "union guy" nearly 200 bucks to rod out my sewer line because of an emergency back-up.

In one hour, I was charged what I make in one week.

No real complaints though. I helped him to speed things along and keep it under one hour, and I learned how to do it myself next time.

If you look at it that way, it was like taking a class. If you just paid him to do it and looked the other way, chances are there would have been a whole lot of complications and parts he needed and it would have been a 500 dollar affair at the end and you would have learned squat.

I may not be able to get into a union without my old man blowing somebody to get me in, but I don't need it. I make those wages on the back end. At the end of the day, my Union friends are mired in debt and I only made 11k gross last year and don't own a penny to anyone.

I'd be happy to let the "union guys" do the work next time if I didn't learn from this experience and it didn't cost me more than 1/50th of my take home pay for the year for the trouble.

What a scam...
