In a previous thread, Conservatives have no ideas what to do about recessions http://www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?tid=57060 it became clear that conservatives - at least the conservatives on this board- really DON'T have any ideas what to do about recessions.

But there were a lot of ideas proposed from the other end of the political spectrum, and interesting divisions of ideas developed. Some people were fairly straightforward Keynesians, others represented a moderated approach. This might be a good space to discuss those ideas.

Easy one.

Put cash in the hands of the people- every single one of 'em. Not those measly $400 -$600 tax rebates, but bigger amounts- $1500 to $2000 EACH. That's enough to pay off some debts, save some, and still go out and spend some, on a fairly big ticket item- a NEW refrigerator or stove, maybe a worthwhile down payment on a better car.

And if you're going to give money to bankers, REQUIRE them to account for it a year later-- prove that they invested it in small loans; didn't use it for corporate takeovers ; didn't give it to Donald Trump to finance a new golf course with; didn't invest it in blue chip stock purchases to benefiit the bank; and aren't just sitting on it. One year later, not 2 or 5 or 10-- get the cash moving right away.

What if people then use that money to buy an LG refrigerator (based and manufactured in South Korea) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG_Display or an Apple iPhone (manufactured by Foxcon in China). Then the money no longer recycles to the USA economy in the form of jobs, but flows right offshore.

Well, since lowering interest rates doesn't do much as you have to HAVE money to take advantage of that, and printing off money and handing it out teaches people nothing and certainly won't help in the long run, and busting up monopolies is counter productive since most little people np longer can afford the tech to keep up with even moderately large businesses...

I say we take every shmuck who has ever been CAUGHT diddling a kid, starving them, killing someone for no reason whatsoever out back AND SHOOT THEM and redistribute whatever they had to the victims and the rest of us decent folk. Then we annex Mexico and continue the tradition. Think about all the resources they AREN'T using. Think about the crime rate and how much better it could be and how we won't be supporting people for the rest of their lives who don't deserve to be breathing the same air I do.
Yeah, we'll be bastards, but we'll be a world power again, a force to be reckoned with!!!

WHO'S WITH ME???

Since your post makes no sense whatsoever (everything you propose is either ineffective or completely counterproductive), I assume you're kidding. Right?

No, you're totally right, let's keep everything the same and piss around in mediocrity for the next fifty years watching basic necessities for families become even more unreachable while we spend billions supporting and maintaining psychotic dickheads.

Makes sense...

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

"and printing off money and handing it out teaches people nothing"

So you agree the government should stop handing $85 billion to the banks for free every month?

ETA: BTW this is a simple question. I can't imagine any downside to saying - yes I think this is wrong.

Yer not seeing the possibilities, which I get how hard that can be.

When China and India finally figure out they are outta space and sane women, it's gonna get fugly.

Mexicans are resilient buggers and we're eventually gonna need them. Mainly because it makes sense. We've been pissing on them for generations and the only way that would change that is for us to admit we need them for something. But that's waaay down the road....

Everything comes full circle.

Why? Don't they make better, more exploitable workers as illegals? [/sarcasm]

Wish, I salute you. Every now and then we need this kind of modest proposal to blow in a fresh wind of satire, lest we take ourselves too seriously.
