Call the irony police! The North Carolina State Conference of the NAACP is holding a rally to protest that state's new voter identification law, but participants are being advised to bring photo identification. Aurelius of Pundit Press discovered the advisory and comments:

In a flier entitled "Important Dos and Don'ts for Marchers!!!," the NAACP state at the top that all protesters conduct themselves "in accordance with the historic custom of the Civil Rights Movement." They should also listen to their "marshals at all times" and follow the "Dos" and "Don'ts" underneath the opening paragraph.

Some of the Dos are sensible for any rally, such as, "look out for the elderly and the young" and "wear a hat and very comfortable shoes" (emphasis theirs).

Then there are ones that are common sense that you wouldn't expect to have to tell people, such as "DO NOT intimidate, threaten, ostracize or degrade anyone," and do not threaten commuters.

In the middle of the list, however, is a drastically ironic "Do." To go to the rally, you are asked to have "photo identification (driver's license, passport or other valid photo id) with you and keep it on your person at all times ."

Remember, this is a protest against needing a photo ID to take part in a fundamental responsibility of Americans... but to go to that protest, you are supposed to have an ID.

Here's a couple more.

I can understand the suggestion to bring I.D. to a march that includes civil disobedience, where you might get arrested (as noted in the first link), but you have to admit being asked to bring I.D. to an anti-I.D. rally is kind'a ironic.

Yeah, the right wing is all over it, failing of course to mention that it's only one of many common-sense "dos and don'ts" listed:

What's even funnier is they railed about it on DOZENS of websites back in 2012 when the NAACP required photo ID from REPORTERS, as is common at many events:
Quote:

Conservative website raises stir over ID check at Holder event

Conservative websites were abuzz Tuesday after one suggested it was ironic that the NAACP requested reporters covering a speech by Attorney General Eric Holder bring two forms of identification, a common practice at major events.

The conservative website Townhall.com pointed to an NAACP press release, which it said requested reporters bring a government-issued photo identification as well as a credential from their organization when checking in, which is not unusual at that type of event.

"What did media need in order to attend? That's right, government issued photo identification (and a second form of identification, too!), something both Holder and the NAACP stand firmly against when it comes to voting," a post to the website read.

"Ironically, NAACP President Ben Jealous railed against voter ID just before Holder took the stage," the post continued, adding a quote from Jealous' remarks. More at http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2012/07/10/conservative-website-r

I'm sure they're going to BAN anyone who doesn't know their bus number, look out for the elderly, eat a balanced meal beforehand, or wear a hat and comfortable shoes…! Anything to create a story, and their mindless followers will blow anything out of proportion to try and make some kind of...uh, point? Anyone who can look at that list of dos and don'ts and make what they're trying to make out of it is being ridiculous.

Not to mention that there is a gigantic difference between suggesting people carry an ID to go to an event and absolutely requiring them to have an ID to exercise their right to vote!

What bullshit! Nothing ironic about it whatsoever, unless it would also be ironic for any of the above things to be suggested at any rally protesting anything...?

I read the list as suggestions, or an Niki says, "common sense ideas." I think the headline and header distort-- the "DO" list ISN'T a list of Requirements, I don't think they'd refuse to let you in if you didn't have one, whereas it IS required to vote. I do agree that it is ironic.

Hee, hee, hee, yeah, Mark, pretty wild, eh? I've gotten that same list numerous times when attending a demonstration. Bringing an ID is common sense, but many don't think about it (like remembering your bus number). Should something untoward happen and you get hurt or unconscious or something, they need to ID you. Also, should you get arrested, as mentioned. When potentially dealing with the cops, it only makes sense...even moreso for African Americans, who have even more of a tendency to get shot or something when demonstrating.

To equate a list of reasonable, common-sense suggestions about what to bring to a protest and how to behave with a political ploy of passing laws restricting citizens' Constitutional right to vote would be amusing, if it weren't so noxious.

And yes, thanx for reminding us, Second: It's not like Republicans themselves haven't been clear that restricting voting rights is a deliberate agenda. When they're not careful enough, Republicans have been caught over and over admitting that restricting voting is a POLITICAL move, and has nothing to do with "voter fraud" or anything else.

Longtime conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly:
Quote:

“The reduction in the number of days allowed for early voting is particularly important because early voting plays a major role in Obama’s ground game.” http://www.wnd.com/2013/08/north-carolina-embraces-honest-elections/#d

Pennsylvania House Majority Leader Mike Turzai (R) :
Quote:

“Voter ID, which is gonna allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania, done.”

Wall Street Journal columnist John Fund:
Quote:

“I think it is a fair argument of some liberals that there are some people who emphasize the voter ID part more than the absentee ballot part because supposedly Republicans like absentee ballots more and they don’t want to restrict that.” http://talkingpointsmemo.com/muckraker/john-fund-sure-republicans-focu

Quote:

Former Florida GOP leaders say voter suppression was reason they pushed new election law
Former GOP chair, governor say voter fraud wasn’t a concern, but reducing Democratic votes was.

A new Florida law that contributed to long voter lines and caused some to abandon voting altogether was intentionally designed by Florida GOP staff and consultants to inhibit Democratic voters, former GOP officials and current GOP consultants have told The Palm Beach Post.

“The Republican Party, the strategists, the consultants, they firmly believe that early voting is bad for Republican Party candidates,” Greer told The Post. “It’s done for one reason and one reason only. … ‘We’ve got to cut down on early voting because early voting is not good for us,’ ” Greer said he was told by those staffers and consultants.
“They never came in to see me and tell me we had a (voter) fraud issue,” Greer said. “It’s all a marketing ploy.”

Wayne Bertsch, who handles local and legislative races for Republicans, said he knew targeting Democrats was the goal.

Another GOP consultant, who did not want to be named, also confirmed that influential consultants to the Republican Party of Florida were intent on beating back Democratic turnout in early voting after 2008.

(Former Governor Charlie) Crist said party leaders approached him during his 2007-2011 gubernatorial term about changing early voting, in an effort to suppress Democrat turnout.

GOP consultant who asked to remain anonymous out of fear of retribution said black voters were a concern. “I know that the cutting out of the Sunday before Election Day was one of their targets only because that’s a big day when the black churches organize themselves,” he said. more at http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/news/state-regional-govt-politics/ea

But hey, what can you say when the internet is slathered with some pretend story about bringing IDs to a protest, and when sensible people see it for what it is and refuse to take the bait, they're called "sociopathic"? I guess only that some on the right have teetered right off the deep end, they've gotten so desperate.

I mocked him because the rest of you can't ignore him, as I've seen over the years and years again. Thoughtful discussions take time. If the trolls went away, the pace might slow considerably. That might be a good thing.

FWIW my time on this site is very scattered. It might be an hour or so for a couple of days running, then not again for a week or more. It doesn't lend itself to ongoing conversation. I'm not sure if other people have the same difficulty. In any case, b/c of my scheduling I don't expect to participate in too much continuing back and forth.

OOC, do you know of any internet sites that successfully maintain intelligent discussion? If so, can you say what the characteristics are that cause that to happen?

Mal4, I didn't catch that you were given shit for mocking our resident troll, I hope you don't think I was. My only argument against responding in any way is that any reply gives him the excuse to post again...tho' of course he does that whether he gets a response or not, so I don't suppose it really matters. I just wanted to say that I've been endeavoring recently to ignore him, difficult as that is when he writes such completely absurd, half-witted, offensive things. I respond to others, but not to him or that other, Nobody Troll, mostly I don't even read what they write anymore, so I'm doing my part. As of now, I'm also giving up on Geezer, given my experience in the thread about the ACA; previously I've tried to debate him as honestly as I could, but I now recognize he's only here to troll, too, and as cowardly as the other two.

I do try to read the first post in most threads, and if it's something like this one, will take a few minutes to investigate and, as in this case, debunk it, then move on unless someone worth responding to make a point I find of interest.

I dunno whether you're right or wrong about the site; I have had numerous good discussions "around" the interruptive posts, and find that refreshing, but then I only hang out in RWED, so I can't speak to the site in general. I'm here every morning before I run the dogs and most mornings afterward, alternating with urban-mushing and husky websites, but in my case it's largely because I can't physically do much else, so I guess "that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it".

I probably get most of my news from reading stuff here and then checking it out, along with perusing the usual websites for stuff that might be interesting to put up here. Obviously my routine is not like others, but it works for me. I, too, would be interested in any internet sites that successfully maintain intelligent discussion; my question, however, would be what are they? I'd love to investigate any. I have no particular interest in sites which are just preaching to the choir, and don't know of any where both sides are intelligently represented.

Speak for yourself. I may respond to others in a thread he started, but Im doing my damndest not to take his bait, or make all conversations about him (as you did here).

Granted, Ive shifted to mocking other idiots - but I really am trying to to feed the lead troll.

"Goram it kid, let's frak this thing and go home! Engage!"

Thanks for the heaping dose of condescension, you really know how to make friends and influence people. And just because you say something does not mean it is true. Far from it IMHO.

So you think that all of your responses to Auraptor are topical? Or do you engage the poster instead of the post? You know the definition of troll? This isn't your kindergarten class where you are always right, even when you are wrong.

No one? Really? You speak for all now?

Methinks you are still confused about trolling. Tell me how continually responding to me instead of the topic means I am bad at trolling?

I prefer mocking uselessness to the usual kind, so I will continue to mock freely whenever I happen to pass by this site. Which isn't often lately.

Long live the trolls! If cutting into their obvious stupidity is the only thing RWED has to offer, have at it, I say. It's probably the only thing keeping this tired site alive these days.

And it's also FUN AS HELL.

WHEE MAYHEM!

We passed the point of no return a long time ago. There was a time I was trying to pull us out of the fire, but I learned you can't help when help isn't wanted. Eventually I succumbed as well, and now I wonder why I ever even tried.

Let it burn.
