Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Speaking at a Heritage Foundation event on Monday about conservative alternatives to the Affordable Care Act, Rep. Ted Poe (R-TN) told the audience that among the ways in which the GOP can facilitate a takeover of the U.S. Senate would be to provide nominees with “a roll of duct tape to put over their mouths.” He said that his party should have taken the Senate in prior election cycles but, because the party’s nominees said “stupid things,” they failed to achieve that.

“I would suggest, when we nominate people, we give them a roll of duct tape to put over their mouths so they don’t say stupid things,” Poe said. “Maybe we can win an election. " http://www.mediaite.com/tv/gop-rep-give-our-nominees-duct-tape-to-put-

Well, at least some of them aren't completely stupid and realize what's going on. I wish him luck; I fear that as long as Faux News and the Tea Partiers are out there encouraging them, it's not gonna change...

How many Republicans have spoken up to say essentially the same thing? Going back to 2012:

Former Tea Party Leader Ridicules GOP Candidates For Saying ‘Stupid Things’ During Campaign

Dick Armey, former House Majority Leader and Tea Party supporter, slammed GOP candidates and their leadership for the loss of Republican campaigns across the country. Armey told CBS This Morning that more than one Republican candidiate “said some stupid things” that cost them the election.

After leaving the House, Armey ran FreedomWorks, an organization which helped the Tea Party movement grow. This election season, FreedomWorks spent $40 million to elect Tea Party candidates, but only one out of every four candidates they endorsed won. Armey was asked whether the Tea Party was slowly weakening, but vehemently denied this, saying instead that the GOP itself was to blame.

Speaking of Senate hopefuls Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock, both of whom made headline-grabbing statements about rape and abortion, Armey said, “We had a lot of candidates, quite frankly, that did dumb things out there.” He blamed the party leaders, saying, “I don’t think the Republican Party schooled their candidates very well or supported their candidates very well.” http://www.mediaite.com/tv/former-tea-party-leader-ridicules-gop-candi

I hate to tell Dick, but it's mostly his ultra-conservative Tea Party candidates who say the stupidest things, and the establishment GOPers who've been telling them to stop making asses of themselves.

Public comments like that and early over-confidence are greater threats to a Republican Senate takeover in November than anything else. They always seem to forget the power of Obama's bully pulpit and the Dem.-friendly media. It's a long long shot at best. It will require a discipline of message they don't seem capable of.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

But what message should they be giving?

While duct-taping their mouths shut, be sure to cover their noses as well.
