Former New Orleans Mayor Ray 'Nincompoop' Nagin was convicted today in Federal Court on 20 of 21 charges. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

I'm sure you're right about that. Nagin will be sentenced soon and he could get 3 years for each conviction, a potential total of 60 years.

Maybe GW will invite him to go fishing after he's served his time.

In the Ray Nagin article in Wikipedia...

Quote:

Several news sources, including BBC News and numerous blogs and editorials,[10][11][12] have stated that Nagin was a registered Republican for most of his adult life, and a George W. Bush supporter, but switched to the Democratic Party shortly before seeking office. In 2004, he endorsed John Kerry for president.[13][14] In a January 13, 2006 interview on the Tavis Smiley]] Show, Nagin himself denied these rumors, stating that he "never was a Republican" and that he has been a "life-long Democrat", [15] and several of the news sources reporting that he was a Republican have since issued retractions. [16] He did give contributions periodically to candidates of both parties, including Representative Billy Tauzin in 1999 and 2000, as well as Democratic Senators John Breaux and J. Bennett Johnston, Jr. earlier in the decade. Nagin endorsed conservative Republican Bobby Jindal over conservative Democratic Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Blanco in the 2003 runoff for governor. Both candidates platforms were almost identical, so Nagin requested each write a letter detailing what they would do for the citizens of New Orleans if elected. Jindal wrote a very detailed plan while Blanco sent a one page, two paragraph letter.[17]

Interesting how folks tried to label him a Republican right after Katrina.

Interesting. Maybe that explains why all 3 network news shows last night conveniently failed to mention that Nagin was a Democrat in their coverage of his conviction.

When it's a Democrat in trouble, it'll never be mentioned in the story. When it's a Republican, it's ALWAYS front and center of the story.

That is lame for them to conceal his party.

But hey, at least they didn't pull the Fox trick of just lying and labeling them as from the opposite party.

Funny how you guys were never bothered by that...

As noted above, they did that earlier, after Katrina.

And, as noted, they ran retractions.

Which Fox doesn't do.

Nice knee-jerk defense, though.

Anyone who doesn't know Nagin was a Democrat is probably too far gone to care anyways.

"and several of the news sources reporting that he was a Republican have since issued retractions."

So several is all of them? Sure?

Also, I'd be interested in cites of Fox News claiming folks belong to the opposite party.

You know, if you'd followed the links in this story, you'd have found this.

Quote:

At about 2:30 Thursday afternoon, Trace Gallagher, of Fox News' "Live Desk," offered this on-air apology:

"We just want to make a correction to something we put up on the screen during our coverage of the governor's press conference yesterday. We briefly identified Governor Sanford as a Democrat. He is, of course, a Republican and we apologize for getting it wrong."

So looks like Fox does make corrections.

Also, other media outlets have also made misidentifications concerning Representative Foley.

NIKI2

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Haven't bothered to read this thread, since I'm guessing our righties are having a happy little circle jerk around it. But the fact is, Nagin's never been a "democrat":
Quote:

Nagin had actually been a registered Republican for most of his adult life, switching to the Democrats shortly before seeking office, for which his candidacy was branded as opportunistic in the solidly Democrat city. Nagin was, at that time, a known Bush supporter, having contributed to the president’s campaign. http://www.citymayors.com/mayors/new_orleans_mayor.html

He listed himself as a Dem on the ballot, just to get elected, because a Republican, calling himself a Republican, would not get elected in New Orleans. Between 2002 -2004 less than 15 percent of voters in the city of New Orleans claimed to support the GOP. ( http://www.gnocdc.org/orleans/voting.html) Nagin's actual platform was virtually the same as that of his GOP rivals. He campaigned as a ‘pro-business reformer.’ Contrary to right-wing talking points, he was not backed by either the GOP or the Democrats. He financed his own campaign for mayor, using mostly his own resources.

During the height of the hurricane Katrina fiasco, Nagin was a Bush apologist ( http://newsbusters.org/node/953). He helped to shift blame to LA’s Democratic governor. In 2008, Nagin’s close connections with Karl Rove were exposed in the book “Machiavelli’s Shadow: The Rise and Fall of Karl Rove,” by Paul Alexander.
Quote:

“In short, Rove was going to blame (governor) Blanco (D) for the failure of the response in Louisiana, and to do that he was going to use Nagin. (Rove) had already set the plan in motion on Tuesday with Nagin, who, even though he was a Democrat, was so close to the Republican Party that some members of the African American community in New Orleans called him Ray Reagan.” ("Machiavelli’s Shadow: The Rise and Fall of Karl Rove" by Paul Alexander)

There's lots more about the Nagin-Rove connection at http://www.salon.com/2008/06/06/rove_katrina/

Apart from Nagin’s former ties to the GOP, his communications with Rove and his gifts to the Bush campaign, the former New Orleans mayor also endorsed Bobby Jindal, the GOP candidate for governor of Louisiana:
Quote:

“Bobby Jindal understands that all of Louisiana benefits from and needs a strong New Orleans. With Jindal as governor, New Orleans and the rest of the state will be partners, not adversaries – which is critical because we can only move this state forward together.” http://capitolwatch.reallouisiana.com/html/DAEB6262-6772-4AF9-B4DD-F09
FE6118D2E.shtml

The right is tying Nagin’s name to the Democrats because he listed himself as a (D) on the ballot. A person can run as anything they want, and if the voters don't check them out, they don't know what they're getting. Nagin pushed GOP policies, communicated with GOP operatives, and endorsed and supported GOP candidates. A Republican by any other name is still a Republican.

Nagin was never a Democrat, he called himself one to get elected, simple as that. So I'll leave them to enjoy themselves and their fantasies.

Strange then that the folks of New Orleans, who (per your cite) are 67.3% Democrat and only 12.3% Republican, elected him as a Democrat. Appears that you're claiming that the folks in New Orleans are too stupid or gullible to tell.

And once again, you seem to think that a person elected by one party (Democrat) acting in a bi-partisan manner with a member of another party (Republican) is a betrayal.

Just so glad you're not in a position of power.
