Hmmm.... Fukushima is a case of bad news simply catching up to reality.

Strontium levels have been recently revealed to have been soaring, along with the cesium that's been reported all along. These levels are found in test wells drilled at the site, indicating massive direct groundwater contamination by nuclear fuel. TEPCO is hypothesizing that the fuel in reactor No 1 melted out of the pressurized reactor vessel and landed on the concrete pad below and is eating its way thru the concrete.

REALLY??? YA THINK??? I was once able to find a thermogram of an actual experimental reactor meltdown which showed the nuclear fuel dripping thru the bottom of the reactor like honey, through all of the holes for the control rods and other penetrations. Those reactor vessels are naught but sieves, really. I'm pretty sure the same has happened to all of the other vessels as well.

In any case, I still wonder about the viability of continued cleanup operations. The nuclear fuel is basically uncontained... workers keep finding new hot spots which are fatal is 20 minutes or so. These are resulting from steam condensation, leaks, spills, etc. The site is underlain by severely contaminated groundwater which is rising to the surface. At some point, it seems to me that the accumulated contamination is going to make the entire site completely unworkable.

Anyway, the contaminated water has reached the shoreline. If you think the plume of radiation reaching the USA is worrisome NOW, just wait till the really nasty shit starts reaching our shores 3-4 years from now, because for sure neither TEPCO nor Japan are going to be able to control this by then.

There is also evidence of thyroid cancer clusters in Fukushima children. The cancers are "too early", but are nonetheless occurring.

One piece of good news- apparently the removal of spent (and fresh) fuel from spent fuel pool No 4 is going (IS it going?? I haven't heard anything since the original attempt a few months ago) without a hitch. Nothing's blown up, anyway.

Hey CHRIS, thanks for the link! Some of those images are indeed very new to me! I'm always interested in fresh perspectives, and when I find (or am pointed to) an interesting news item, I always backtrack to the home page.

5 November 2012 – A year after reporting on the devastation
caused by the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident in Japan,
the head of the United Nations International Atomic Energy
Agency (IAEA) told the world body’s Member States today
that nuclear power is safer than before the disaster.

In a statement to a General Assembly meeting on the UN
agency’s activities over the past year, the IAEA’s Director-
General, Yukiya Amano, told delegates that the atomic
energy watchdog had spearheaded progress in many areas
regarding international nuclear safety.

“Measures have been taken to improve protection against
extreme hazards such as earthquakes and tsunamis,” Mr.
Amano said. “Countries are upgrading their emergency
preparedness and response capabilities. Our programme
of expert peer review services is being expanded.”
