Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Quote:Interest in giving Ukraine's divided regions more control over their financial and political destiny is gaining traction in both Kiev and the Russian-speaking east, possibly deterring separatist movements and offering common ground between Moscow and Ukraine. Regional leaders in the volatile east were loyal to former President Viktor Yanukovych – and dismissive of Kiev’s new central government. But in recent days they have said that greater fiscal and legal autonomy could appease those who want closer ties to Russia but are not necessarily keen to break off from Ukraine entirely. “I’m not talking about separation. I mean decentralization of powers that would result in giving us control over budgets and resources, general prosecutors, and security services,” says Sergei Bogachov, the secretary of the Donetsk City Council and a member of Mr. Yanukovych’s Party of Regions political bloc. “Kiev needs to understand and support regional demands. This is a big country, and it can’t be ruled from the center as it is now.”

Quote:Novofedorivka (Undefined) (AFP) - About 200 pro-Russian protesters on Saturday stormed a Ukrainian air force base in western Crimea, forcing the soldiers to leave as the Ukrainian flag was taken down. The unarmed crowd yelling "Russia! Russia!" broke through to the base in the town of Novofedorivka and started smashing windows. Ukrainian servicemen barricaded themselves inside buildings and threw smoke bombs at the intruders from the roof. Some of the people threw the smoke bombs back at the soldiers.

Quote:Moody's announced on its website on Friday that it would downgrade Ukraine's sovereign rating by one notch, pushing up the cost of borrowing money for the country's government. The New-York based assessor lowered Ukraine from Caa2 to Caa3, following a previous downgrade in January. The Caa rating is a credit risk grading based on speculative investment risks. The current downgrade takes Ukraine from Moody's "extremely speculative" rating to "default imminent with little prospect for recovery."

But Kiev is still trying to incite western involvement. If Putin is smart, he won't take the bait- he'll just make the Ukraine a festering economic and civil sore on the EU's backside. Kiev will probably continue its countermeasures- still trying to provoke a Russian response and western military involvement. I have no idea how far they will go in eastern/southern Ukraine. Mass arrests? Martial law? Military measures against demonstrators? The west has NATO exercises planned for the Ukraine for next month (?). Hopefully the Russian will see this as turnabout/ fair play.

Quote: Ukraine's military boss said the incursion by Kyiv's army into Russian territory has impacted Russia's attempts to capture the strategically important city of Pokrovsk. One of the goals of the Kursk offensive has been to try and slow down Russia's advance on Pokrovsk, by forcing the Kremlin to redeploy troops from its eastern front. The city is a major transport and logistics hub for Kyiv's army in the Donetsk region. Recent reports suggest that Putin's army is within 3 miles of the city, as it seeks to make a major breakthrough in the war. Some military analysts fear its capture could lead to the collapse of Ukraine's entire eastern front. Vladimir Putin told an audience at an economic forum in Vladivostok on Thursday that his main goal was to capture the entire Donbas region. He claimed the Kursk incursion had weakened Ukraine's army in the east by diverting experienced troops away from the Donetsk front, which had helped Russia's army to make faster gains in the Donbas. However, General Syrskyi dismissed Putin's claims in an interview with CNN on Thursday. Issuing a four-word verdict on the Russian President's remarks, he said:"Our strategy is working." He continued: "Over the last six days the enemy hasn’t advanced a single metre in the Pokrovsk direction.
