Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

On March 24, 2014, Texas Tea Party Senator, Ted Cruz, decided to put up a ‘quick poll,’ about the ACA on his facebook page. Problem? The Koch brothers don’t control the conversation on social media, the people do. The question Cruz asked on facebook was simple: "Are you better off now than you were before the ACA, also called Obamacare, was signed into law, four years ago?" Nearly 40,000 comments later, the resounding answer from people all across the country was YES.

You should read it, it's a gas: https://www.facebook.com/SenatorTedCruz/posts/517779935000978

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

YES...I was denied heath insurance because of having MS as a pre-existing condition and would soon be going medically bankrupt or stop getting treatment. I now have excellent coverage and have a brighter future!

YES, best law ever! And way overdue! I spent all my retirement savings on overpriced insurance in order to save my life when I got cancer in 2005. I had no income and now have no savings. If it had been in place back then, I wouldn't be looking at a poor retirement, but at least I am not worried about having care anymore.

Yes. Costs stopped climbing. I'm a small business guy and I don't have to worry because insurance companies can't drop us anymore.

Much better off. We'd be even better off if people like you weren't in the US Senate.

How funny!

Well, it just goes to prove you can't fool all of the people all of the time!

Yeah, apparently there were intermittent responses from the tea party crowd. When called out, it quickly became apparent that the ‘no’ respondents had not signed up for the ACA or even reviewed their options, under the law. Like this one: "Didn't have insurance then, don't have insurance now. Didn't want insurance then, don't want insurance now."

In other words, these are people who don't have insurance and don't plan to buy any. They are people who obviously have no problem shifting the burden of their healthcare onto the public. If they get hurt in an accident or becomes sick, their options will be to file for bankruptcy and let the TAXPAYER pick up the tab (unless they have hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay their own medical expenses). Hey, works for them!

Can you imagine what it would have been like to get the public option? Or the holy grail of single payer?

I did, which is how I know those comments are rare. But it IS your point, and you failed to make it.

MEANWHILE, you have failed to show anything in my post is wrong.

And I've disproved two of yours, because one was plain wrong and the other you can't back up. So, you get a BIIIIIIG zero.

So, is it a matter of professional pride to never discuss somebody else's argument? To always shift the debate onto your terms? Trick of the trade and all that? Cause you've still failed to address the original post.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I found Geezer's remark curious... "Interesting the number of liberals (based on their comments) that follow Ted Cruz's Facebook page" … "don't really sound like the Tea Party, however". Is he saying that only Tea Partiers were supposed to respond to the question and "liberals" weren't allowed? I thought it was just an open poll. My guess would be that Cruz put it up, word got out and people went there to respond. But Geezer appears to be saying that

A. Only Tea Partiers are allowed to answer the question.

B. Ted Cruz is only interested in what Tea Partiers think…not the American people, not his constituents, only Tea Partiers.

C. Whatever happens to "Liberals" doesn't count.

D. The fact that, as one commenter pointed out, "so far the YES count is above 95-7% to NO's" means apparently the vast number of responders were all "Liberals"

E. Tea Partiers didn't bother to respond

F. Or…what?

I not only read through the comments when I first posted it, I went back and clicked on people's names. They appear to all be regular Facebook pages, unless a whole lot of people deliberately created FB pages in the past just so they could respond to this poll ;o) . There were nine anti-Cruz remarks in the 49 original comments I read, so not a huge number. Most of the comments were well written and correctly spelled, only a couple were particularly nasty.

But if you click on the "replies", it gets even more interesting. The replies to the comments were somewhat amusing, Such as (culled from replies to several different initial comments):
Quote:

"your so smart...go take a vacation"

"You Liberals are the assholes not Ted Cruz"

"cant wait until we take 6 seats from you commies this November"

"An Obama shill pitching Obamacare imagine that!!"

"Good grief no one believes these lies. No, you aren't better off and you're a troll."

There was plenty of unpleasantness on the other side, as well.

I found it fascinating. The comments had many, many reply "conversations", which got heated. Nay-sayers would come across with the usual right-wing talking points, and they'd get replies like this exchange:
Quote:

"Yes. Costs stopped climbing. I'm a small business guy and I don't have to worry because insurance companies can't drop us anymore."

"You're a small business guy huh, That's funny because then you would realize how full of crap your original post is full of. Typical lib acting like they are for "small business" all the while taking all of the money out of them."

"A Liberal who owned a business for over 30 years, and my old employees still come and visit me. So, what is this crap about Liberals not owning business'.....Costco is run by Liberals you knotheads."

"Right, there ISN'T a single 'lib' small business out there, seeing as how we're all 'against' them. The ONLY people who are competent enough to conceive or start up a business are god fearin' far right winger nuts! I'm on my 5th small business and I am a 'lib' so maybe we should have a category called 'miniscule' businesses and compartmentalize all 'libs' with their own businesses."

"Small businesses like mine can get a 50% tax credit if we provide health insurance. We couldn't get that before. This applies to companies with fewer than 26, which happens to be where the vast majority of hiring takes place. The Affordable Care Act is good for small businesses, good for me, and with those tax cuts the REAL job creators can do more hiring."

Another exchange from that same initial comment by the small-business owner:
Quote:

"When the government gives you something, they own you. This is not a good thing ... costs are going to keep going up."

"It's good to hear from a small business. Dorothy, he just said his costs stopped rising. You must garner a new talking point lol."

"Dorothy, for the first time in about 40-50 years costs have been coming down. The Affordable Care Act includes a rule that no more than 15% for a group, or 20% for an individual can be spent on administrative costs. 26% of health insurance costs were being burned on things like executive pay increases before the ACA. The 80/20 rule requires as least 80% be spent on health. Well, I got a check for several hundred dollars back from my insurance company for that. (Note: There is no government run plan, no government control. My plan is with Blue Cross Blue Shield as it has always been. Would you say... BCBS owns me?)"

" "costs are going to keep going up." Of course they are. Question: do you think it would be any different without Obamacare?"

Every time someone spoke up with one of the usual propaganda "points", people would give them facts and figures, and frequently links, in rebuttal, and the original responder rarely re-appeared. It's really fascinating reading.

Like this exchange:
Quote:

"I don't have Obamacare, but someone I know who had bad mouthed it for the past for years, recently had to get coverage after her husband passed away. The first words out of her mouth, "Thank God for Obamacare." She is a staunch Republican and believes everything she hears on Fox News. And those who are saying they won't comply are cutting off their noses to spite their faces."

"Give me a break. After my experience on ACA success page I don't believe anything. Sorry you feel so threatened by FOX news that you need to call them out! Try not watching them. I am a Proud Republican and I support healthcare reform, but not they way it is being done."

"I don't feel threatened by Fox, I'm just very upset that so many people believe their lies."

"What way would you like to see it done? We've been waiting for alternative answers for five years and haven't been getting any. This is clearly a better option than what we had before, even if 100% of the people aren't happy with it."

""Obamacare" is not a thing. There is no such thing as "Obamacare." You do not sign up for "Obamacare." Citizens purchase insurance through private insurance companies, none of which are called "Obamacare."
Republicans have had four years to exercise their FREEDOM to become informed yet many have abandoned that FREEDOM and still are massively uninformed. How can you be "against Obamacare" when it isn't even a real thing? The ACA reforms EXISTING FOR-PROFIT INSURANCE. It is sad that Republicans willingly swallow lies designed to harm them."

""Obamacare" is not an insurance policy. You don't "have" Obamacare. You buy health insurance from private companies, which are REGULATED by "Obamacare" and prevented from SCREWING YOU nearly as badly as before."

I even learned something new…I never knew it was the Reagan Administration when this happened:
Quote:

Dave, the crazy thing is that we already paid for all of those people, but the stupid way. You see Reagan passed a law that said everyone could get free treatment at the ER if they couldn't pay for it. Reagan set up a massive case of socialism; so Americans who paid were socializing the losses of the irresponsible, or those who couldn't afford, didn't get insurance.

So, in some cases 30% of hospital bills go unpaid and Government covers it through higher taxes and hospitals increase the fees on the insured who pay. Here is a study of the uncompensated care costs that would spike up to about $700 billion without the Affordable Care Act. It is actually cheaper to help them buy insurance! ( http://www.urban.org/UploadedPDF/412045_cost_of_uncompensated.pdf)

All in all, it was very illuminating, and I learned quite a bit about different kinds of insurance, in different states, what was available before and now, etc. I also found it interesting that so many people gave so much information, while the nay-sayers didn't post facts, figures or links, just threw up a snark or some talking point, then rarely returned.

Very interesting.

"Bullshit. Just because you won't take the time to read them..." So, Geezer, are you calling me a liar too? I read 'em. I QUOTED entire sections. I replied to your statements about "liberals" responding on Cruz's FB page, I read not only the comments (and COUNTED, 9 out of 49 negative comments about Cruz), but read the various conversations in depth and quoted them.

Of the responses to Cruz's original question visible on the first page, 35 replied "yes"--I'm not counting those that didn't actually answer the question specifically, they were either more general or political in nature (12). There was only one "no": "No. I couldn't afford healthcare before and I still can't and now will also have to pay a fine. Wish I could fine the government for making my life hell everyday." This person never came back to reply to the 308 responses offering suggestions, asking if they'd ever actually applied, if they had checked into financial assistance or Medicaid, and giving them lots of information such as
Quote:

"That could very well be possible in a state where medicaid wasn't expanded like mine. But if you are in the in between spot (somewhere where you would have been covered by the expanded medicaid) then you wont be required to pay the fine."

"Not true, David. If you simply cannot afford any of the plans offered, you are exempt."

"You don't have to pay a fine if you have a utility shut off notice. Don't pay your electric bill. Get your shut off notice in the mail. Keep it. Pay your bill so your lights don't get shut off and then since you have electric, go to the website and actually read it. There are a bunch of exemptions, like if you've had a death in the family or are Amish."

"David........ I can see that you live in Maine. Maine's Governor. Paul LePage has not allowed the free expansion of Medicaid under the ACA. About 25,000 poor and uninsured Mainers will miss out on health insurance under the Affordable Care Act because the state refused to expand Medicaid, according to a national study by the Kaiser Family Foundation."

"Call 1-800-318-2596 and ask for help."

"if you have that low of an income you will be provided it free from the county, look into if you are serious"

"Get an agent to help you! I thought it was awful at first and when the agent showed up it was like a miracle. I have a great and affordable plan."

And much more.

WITHIN that conversation, one other person spoke up to say: "NO! my insurance rate went up to 750$ a month! You guys like that? I can't afford that price....I was happy..now you are......I am supposed to be happy that you are and I am not!!!!?????They increased my friends family insurance to 2500$ a month..she had to cancel and has no insurance now...glad to see you are all happy! Many of us are not!"

She got this response, among others:

"Linda, the insurance rate you're quoting sounds like it came from whatever substandard insurance company you were using before (the same ones that cancelled policies that were bad policies and didn't meet ACA minimum requirements). Have you gone to the exchange and tried to find a plan there? The way it's structured, it's pretty much unheard of for anyone to get the kind of results you're complaining about. I know politics makes it hard for some to admit they're wrong, but give it a try: open your mind and get covered. You'll feel better."

I went to this person's FB page ( https://www.facebook.com/zeitounelinda?fref=ufi). There's virtually nothing there…not one single post…except she "likes" "Stop Pelosi PAC" and signed "Committee to Protect the American Flag". I went to the original poster's page ( https://www.facebook.com/NikolaTeslaa?fref=ufi). It's filled with nothing but anti-Democrat, anti-Obama, anti-global warming, anti-Obamacare posts, graphics, photos, etc. He posted absolutely nothing else, no posts about family, friends, interests, or anything else on the first page (I didn't bother to go further)…oh, except one at the very bottom: "Just made the best salad ever."

Is that detailed enough for you? Or do you want to call ME a liar, too?

Having fun here. Checking out the FB pages of the first 12 of the people who said "yes". Unquestionably six of them would be considered "liberals". They have distinctly liberal material on their FB pages.

But the other six of them aren't necessarily "libruls", just people with varied interests, hobbies, etc.:

I assume they're not necessarily "Tea Partiers", 'cuz there's nothing specifically political on the first page of their FB (I didn't investigate beyond that), but does that mean their responses don't count? What exactly is a criteria that Geezer and his buddies would accept, I wonder?

Okay, this has been mildly entertaining and somewhat interesting, but I've blown sufficient of my morning, far more than I usually spend here anymore. Now it's time to go do something real. I will be curious to see if Geezer has anything to say about all this...not very, but mildly, since by calling Kiki a liar, after I POSTED direct quotes from Cruz's FB page and the question at issue, he is essentially calling ME a liar as well.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

I predict if he does reply it will be another sidetrack.

...or he simply will abandon the thread, which appears to be the case...

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

It's an addiction. Which is why politicians love to push that button so often. That, and the "fear" button.

Bullshit.

Just because you won't take the time to read them...

So, those who have actually read through the comments are lying.... and you, who has not, somehow magically knows what's there.... because.

Priceless.
