Jon Stewart doing what he does best:
Quote:

Fox News talking heads:

--People using food stamps to buy gourmet crab legs?

--He is buying lobster.

--You can use EBT cards at the organic market in the East Village. You can get organic salmon, wild salmon. It’s insanity.

Quote:

Jon Stewart

They get wild salmon in the East Village. I always said poor people salmon should come in a can from an outer borough.

(What I'd like to know is what fucking business is it of anyone's WHAT food people use food stamps for?? Wouldn't they be over the roof if the Government DICTATED what food people bought with food stamps?)

Jon Stewart ridiculed some of the hyperbole of Faux News regarding welfare recipients last week, and they got pissed. Eric Bolling took it upon himself to "school" Stewart:
Quote:

Eric Bolling: We are talking about the waste, fraud, and abuse in a lot of the programs.

Jon Stewart: Oh, I see the disconnect. You thought we were ridiculing you for exposing government waste. That’s a reasonable thing to expose. That’s not what were talking about. We were ridiculing the way you exaggerate the scope of public assistance abuse through random, often un-provable, anecdotes, hour long specials and for some reason this hand bursting through the heart of America before apparently reaching into America’s pockets for taxpayer lobster and titi bar money. “Get a job you titi bar lobster eating hand.” You see, your favorite network has created the very "balanced" narrative that ties people’s poverty to their own lack of virtue. And says that programs created to serve the impoverished are in fact the reason that those are still impoverished. Sort of the idea being, if they weren’t such shitty people, they wouldn’t be poor. And those food stamps are just making them shittier. Of course you didn’t say it so elegantly.

Quote:

Fox News Promos & Talking Heads:

--Food stamps abusers. Feeding on taxpayers.

--America’s poor are actually living the good life.

--America’s culture of dependency.

--Our Liberal government is teaching our kids to be takers instead of makers.

--Moochers

--Parasites

--Sucking off the nipple of the government.

--Freeloading

--Draining the society

--Ninety nine percent of them have a refrigerator.

Stewart showed how Fox News used one surfer guy abusing food stamps on six different shows.
Quote:

Jon Stewart: My point is this. Congratulations on finding your food stamps abuse bigfoot. That one guy you found is certainly not someone that the food stamp program itself would probably point to as its greatest success story. But we make fun of you not for finding him. But for pretending that he somehow represents literally millions of Americans. I know I am being purposefully hyperbolic.

Fox News Eric Bolling: He is the representative of literally millions of Americans.

Congrats.

Per the topic... whining and acting all incredulous at the abuses of the food stamp ( funny term , as the actual 'stamp' hasn't been used in ages. Was it ever ? ) doesn't in the least bit dismiss the fact that such abuses do occur.

No. They should NOT be allowed to use govt $ to buy high priced exotic foods. Not only no, but HELL no. Give them MRE's, for all I care. If they actually MAKE money, and want to use real cash to buy caviar and fresh organic salmon, by all means, pay for it out of your own damn pocket.

Kiki, Fan, don't bother. You will never convince people like Rap, they do not deal in facts. They only know what FauxNews tells them. FauxNews says every gub'mint program is rife--RIFE I tell you--with horrific fraud and abuse, ergo it must be so.

For the rest of us, some facts:
Quote:

SNAP payment accuracy is at all-time highs. SNAP has one of the most rigorous quality control systems of any public benefit program, and despite the recent growth in caseloads, the share of total SNAP payments that represent overpayments, underpayments, or payments to ineligible households reached a record low in fiscal year 2011. Only 3 percent of all SNAP benefits represented overpayments, meaning they either went to ineligible households or went to eligible households but in excessive amounts, and more than 98 percent of SNAP benefits were issued to eligible households.

USDA has cut “trafficking” — the sale of SNAP benefits for cash, which violates federal law — by three-quarters over the past 15 years. Only 1 percent, or $1 in every $100 of SNAP benefits, is trafficked. USDA has also permanently disqualified thousands of retail stores from the program for not following federal requirements. In fiscal year 2012, USDA’s retailer fraud investigations resulted in 342 convictions and $57.7 million in recoveries. When cases of SNAP fraud are reported in the news, it is because the offenders have been caught, evidence that states and USDA are aggressively combating fraud. Lots more ACTUAL facts at http://www.cbpp.org/cms/?fa=view&id=3239

...and on and on and on. Note I avoided "left-wing" sites. They wouldn't be caught dead reading the facts, of course, it doesn't fit their FauxNews spoon fed world view.

While government programs are never completely free of fraud, the same is also true for all private programs, enterprises and corporations, but you won't hear them screaming about THAT...there are profits involved, after all.

Without rousing any political debate, I will just say what I have to say now.

Because I successfully fought my property taxes and I switched insurance carriers for a better deal, I am lined up to lose just as many dollars in SNAP benefits.

I'm OK with that. I got used to $157 a month of "free" groceries. I even banked a few hours to help pay for a BBQ I was planning. Next month, it will be cut down to less than $75 a month. Those extra bucks I'd been squirrling away will have to help pay the bills. I can easily cut out 30 bucks of luxuries.

At the end of the day though... FU, I can pay for all of it.

I'm using that extra money this year to put gutters on my house and hooking myself up with a 2-well sump system with a battery backup. I'm also going to splurge 60 bucks now that I know I can have my ice-maker working without having to rip out the walls!

As much as my life sometimes sucks for me, it has to be at least 10 times as happy springboard fun for somebody with a completely differing disposition.

And to them I say.....

I ain't Mad at 'cha....

Got nothin' but love for ya....

Do ya thing boy....

Not only that - but while those are all propaganda - one surfer dude is representative of the entirety of those on assistance.

It is the way "it" thinks, though - all evidence that aid is needed is just lies (just like mountains of quotes from right-wingers does not reflect the views of the group), and one dude who paints the picture our resident fuckwit prefers is an example of all on assistance (just like one loony on the left, in its pathetic "mind," speaks for ALL on the left).

And not only is its brain only capable of thinking in black and white - but also only in the most hyperbolic of ways.

Lets just hope it never breeds.

Had I my way, dickhead, that woulda been $225.00, in perpetuity.

Jobs which pay the bills are hard to come by in our exploited, outsourced, society.

And frankly, I would in EVERY case, pay to feed the poor and shelter the homeless, even if that means supporting the occasional dickhead, because there's NO reason to fuck those really in need to spank that, and collective punishment is ALWAYS a tyrannical act.

Food and housing are far cheaper than bombs too - we should see to our own before trying to project our so-called-authority onto a world that not only doesn't want it, but will actively retaliate for the doing.

Priorities, Jack, priorities.

Oh, and just so you all know just HOW MUCH this hits home with me...

The three nearest apt complexes were recently bought out by a collective of hoity-toity management companies who's first reaction was to boot out all section 8 recipients - who, having run out their unemployment and having their SNAP benefits cut by right wing fucktards, have NO CHOICE but to turn to crime and looting in order to fucking SURVIVE, something which I am SURE sends those rightwingnut sociopathic fucknuts into masturbating little giggles...

And guess WHO it is who has to stand here and protect those who have little, from those who have NOTHING, and suffer the knowledge that by my own actions some of those people will DIE, of malnutrition, exposure (it's been as low as -46F here at times) or violence in the attempt to secure food, heat or housing ?

What do you think it feels like to MURDER people in self-defense, when well-off rightwingnuts leave them hanging while they giggle, gorge themselves and jack off to watching us fight each other to the death ?

The REAL "Hunger Games" exists right fucking here, every winter.
And there's only ONE political faction to blame.

I note that a common 'conservative' stance, regardless of which country, is to zoom the focus on the poorest and most powerless people and do lots of finger wagging. The amazing rewrite of the GFC is a perfect example...caused by the corrupt machinations of the financial market..oh no, its because too many people get handouts. Perleeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaase.

It's an old magicians trick, focus the attention on the penny and the ear to distract from the fact that he's lifted your wallet.

Try to keep up little Marky.
How is it that people on government assistance can get gourmet food?
Do they need the assistance in the first place?
Could the money be better spent on getting more, less expensive food instead of less, more expensive food?
If a program helps some in need is it never to be scrutinized for waste?
What about the optics of the scenario? The person receiving the assistance is eating better food than the person giving the assistance.
Is there any incentive to get off of the assistance so you can stop eating wild salmon and start eating P.B.@ J. sandwiches?
These are all relevant questions, IMHO. But the usual if you question the program, you hate those less fortunate than yourself rhetoric pops up.

What evidence is there that masses of poor people are buying gourmet food? It's a made-up strawman argument. Propaganda courtesy of Faux "News."

We've established that the program has little fraud. You're worried about what poor people do to eat, and don't care at all that GE and Exxon paid no net taxes on their billions in profits.

School's in Marky.

The straw man fallacy occurs in the following pattern of argument:

1.Person 1 has position X.
2.Person 2 disregards certain key points of X and instead presents the superficially similar position Y. The position Y is a distorted version of X and can be set up in several ways, including:
1.Presenting a misrepresentation of the opponent's position.
2.Quoting an opponent's words out of context—i.e., choosing quotations that misrepresent the opponent's actual intentions (see fallacy of quoting out of context).[4]
3.Presenting someone who defends a position poorly as the defender, then denying that person's arguments—thus giving the appearance that every upholder of that position (and thus the position itself) has been defeated.[3]
4.Inventing a fictitious persona with actions or beliefs which are then criticized, implying that the person represents a group of whom the speaker is critical.
5.Oversimplifying an opponent's argument, then attacking this oversimplified version.
3.Person 2 attacks position Y, concluding that X is false/incorrect/flawed.
This reasoning is fallacious because attacking a distorted version of a position does not address the actual position. The ostensible argument that Person 2 makes has the form:

"Don't support X, because X has an unacceptable (or absurd or contradictory or terrible) consequence."
However, the actual form of the argument is:

"Don't support X, because Y has an unacceptable (or absurd or contradictory or terrible) consequence."
This argument doesn't make sense; it is a non sequitur. Person 2 relies on the audience not noticing this.

Yup, that's about it:

"What evidence is there that masses of poor people are buying gourmet food?" None. A couple of instances of people buying food with food stamps which some think they shouldn't is all that's been shown. Again: If the government determined what food people could and couldn't buy with food stamps, people would be screaming their head off--or they should be, because it's exactly the kind of "governmental overreach" they scream about all the time.

"We've established that the program has little fraud." We have, with facts, figures, charts, links and anything else anyone would need.

There is no straw man in either statement.

Anecdotal or do you have a cite for this statement?

How long have you got.

But a good example is austerity measures as an antidote to the GFC.

What is to insinuate? You make it clear. You aggressively attack anything that helps the poor, and applaud anything that benefits the wealthy.

Its not a straw man when its demonstrably based on your behavior. Now, you may resume misusing phrases to try and look smart. Its what makes you so funny.

Georgia Wastes Almost $140 Million a Year in Overpayments to Food Stamp Recipients

By Craig Schneider

Georgia is wasting millions of dollars each year -- about $138 million in 2013 -- in overpayments to people who receive food stamps, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has learned.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and bet the farm that this isn't the ONLY case of waste and or fraud in the entire Food stamp program.

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen

You got any cites for this claim or are you just "farting out of your mouth" again?

I posted the definition of a strawman argument for you to read. So at this point I have to ask. Are you illiterate or ignorant?
