March 2014 marked the first time in more than a decade that there were zero U.S. fatalities among American troops engaging in combat, according to numbers from the Department of Defense. Now THAT's news; good news for our military and their families!

Dunno if we killed "fewer", but there were deaths on the other side in March (these are just from the first page displayed, I don't know where to find earlier reports):

04/01/14 KP: Suicide attack kills 16 senior Taliban leaders in Ghazni ("the Taliban leaders were planning coordinated attacks in Ghazni province when a Taliban suicide bomber opposed the Taliban leaders plans and detonated his explosives.")

03/31/14 telegraph: British sniper in Afghanistan kills six Taliban with one bullet ("Lance Corporal in the Coldstream Guards hit trigger switch of suicide bomber whose device then exploded")

03/30/14 KP: 21 Taliban militants killed, 4 others injured in Afghan operations

03/30/14 KP: 7 militants blown up while making roadside bombs in a mosque in Ghazni

03/30/14 Tolonews: 5 Insurgents Killed in Badakhshan Clash

...and there were Afghan and one NATO deaths:

03/30/14 KP: Suicide attack target NATO troops convoy in Zabul province (1 NATO soldier killed)

03/31/14 KP: Suicide attack in Logar leaves 4 policemen killed or injured

04/01/14 DPA: Two blasts kill eight in Afghanistan

04/01/14 BBC: Afghanistan attacks leave 18 dead ahead of polls

I was going to make some crack about the media not even bothering to report about this, but then I found this on Time:
Quote:

March Was First Month Without U.S. Fatalities in Iraq or Afghanistan In 11 Years

There were no American troop casualties in Afghanistan or Iraq in March, for the first time since February 2003, ending 133 straight months when at least one U.S. service member was killed. U.S. deaths in Iraq peaked in November 2004, and in Afghanistan in August 2011

For the first month since February, 2003, no U.S. troops died in Afghanistan or Iraq last month. That’s 133 months, more than a decade. http://time.com/45160/zero-us-fatalities-iraq-afghanistan-11-years/

I guess Iraq isn't really "news", since we've "officially" not been at war there since 2012, so iCasualties.org stopped keeping track then:

I applaud this fact.
The next question is: were the troops performing combat missions or were they just sitting around on their bases?

If the latter, it's way past time to bring the boys home.

Well, given there are also stories about insurgents being captured:

03/31/14 KP: Afghan intelligence arrest Faryab suicide bombing organizer

03/31/14 KP: Three suicide bombers arrested in Paktia province

...and the ones I listed above about insurgents having been killed by Afghan or American soldiers, reference to "clash" and "in Afghan operations", I assume they're still actively in combat. I wish iCasualties had some kind of "archive" so I could find stories from earlier (the only ones it shows are from the last three days), but I can't figure out how to access such things. It appears the only way I could stay current is to "subscribe" to their feed, which I don't want to do.

MAGONSDAUGHTER

We are now at war with Oceania. We have always been at war with Oceana.

Hang on, I'm in Oceania. You bastards.

Orwell was right about many things. Super powers need wars in order to keep the masses united in hatred against 'the other'.
