Fun, educational, exciting, good Godzilla/Fiat commercial, and last but by no means least, probably TOTALLY IRRITATING to the mentally-limited-due-to-political-duty morons.
I love the way Neil pulls no punches whilst directing them at no one in particular either.
A SCIENTIST.
Out to EDUCATE.
EAT THIS boys.
I did. Tasted good.

Carl is smiling somewhere.

Missed it.

Missed the last couple, actually.

Thanks for the pointless insults though.

If it was more global warming crap, I'll be able to FF through it when I watch it OnDemand.

PS - Nothing from the original series , or Carl's comments in general, made me angry or annoyed, so I fail to see why anything in this series would / should either.

He would go on about the need to take care of this planet, because life sustaining planets are hard to come by , and we've got a pretty good one right here. I agree. But that doesn't give anyone , even w/ the best intentions , carte blanche to gen up fear and angst just so they can pursue a political agenda.

Keep it clean ? Sure, sign me up. But if you go waving pictures of AlGore ? You ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow.

You can always catch up with Neil de Grasshole on Bill Maher's show. He often sits on the guest panel laughing it up when Maher denigrates and spews profanities at black conservatives and female conservatives. Neil obviously thinks that's just hi-larious!

There were ads for Global Warming sticker books and pins and non-polluting AGW tote-bags and greeting cards, and tee shirts and parkas...my God, it's a whole industry. The AGW Industrial Complex... Neil spent the whole show as basically a host of the AGW home-shopping network!

Heh, no. It was mostly about plate-shifting & sea life.

Sorry Greenbean, but Maher is a particularly relentless vile piece of shit, and a smart guy like Neil de Mike Tyson should know better than to be there in the first place. There is no way I can see him other than laughing along with Maher's attacks against conservatives. He can go fuck he-self.

The Cosmos episode on the age of the Earth had fine example of a politically controversial discovery, exactly the kind of story Bill Maher would have jumped on if he had a TV show way back then. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Clean_Room

The Earth's age was measured by radioactive decay of uranium to lead. The lab samples to determine age were contaminated by lead from the octane booster tetra-ethyl lead. The gasoline refiners claimed the lead wasn't their lead, it was completely natural, had always been there, and therefore it was not leaded gasoline that was spreading a neurotoxin. Bill Maher would have had some caustic remarks about refiners, even if Maher isn't a scientist. Somebody was hiding the truth and Maher would have given his opinion about who that was.

That Cosmos episode visited the US Senate where self-described "scientists", under oath to tell the truth, shaded the truth for the benefit of the refiners. At the time it was not transparently obvious to a casual observer what was happening. But now it is.

This whole just-look-at-the-scientific-data thing is so simple, yet Rap & Jong are so per-programmed it's sad. All you have to do if you are scientifically challenged is look at who benefits, who loses & how much.
If AGW is REAL, solar & wind tech companies benefit, and the world benefits a bunch (though the reversal, it it can happen will NOT be immediate in any sense). Big Oil loses big time.
If AGW is NOT real solar & wind tech companies lose a bunch, and BIG Oil gets to stay top dog (for as long as they can keep squeezing the crust for crude).

AND, as most hardcore temporarily not-rich middle class NeoCons do, Rap & Jong are pro-Big Oil, it seems, so Big Oil's paid-for lies seem the way to go.

I saw a cartoon yesterday where two scientists are talking and one says to the other, "What if Global Climate change isn't real and we're just trying to make the air more breathable for nothing-?"

Funnier still that Chris went all political on a show that's suppose to be about science.

As human evolution had already been introduced in the series, I could only wonder as to what would possibly be so gorram IRRITATING to anyone who doesn't blindly buy into the fascist, Left wing mymidon's view.

Though if it's about plate tectonics, continental drift and Alfred Wegener, subduction and uplift and all, I'm down.

In fact, the Marianas trench might be a great place to dump the world's trash, as all that stuff will just get sent down into the mantel and be pulverized and then melted. Nice conveyor belt to a cleaner and better world !

What's funnier than that is when people get all political concerning apolitical topics.
The ice at the North Pole is disappearing.
See, that's no political statement. It's either provable or it's not- politics can't even enter into it. Unless you're dumb enough to politicize a non-political statement (the statement is true and provable, btw).

I sure hope so. But I'm guessing it's out of politeness, and not so much admiration.

So, I caught up w/ the latest 'sode. I liked that they mentioned Alfred Wegener. ( Called that.) As well as the Marianas Trench. ( Called that too ) But it's hard to have a serious discussion about plate tectonics w/ out either of those 2 being mentioned.

And goodon Marie whats-her-name, too. Not sure I'd have tossed in w/ the 'girl talk' stuff, from the animation ( Have I mentioned that I liked the actors portraying historical figures, as they did in the original series, and not so much the animation ? Think I have, and I'm saying it again )

So, going back in time, our world has been as alien to us here, now, today, as just about any other in the cosmos. Seas form and dry up, mountains rise and fall, life evolves and becomes extinct...it all changes.

The idea that our world, THIS world, is as perfect as it's ever been, or would be, if not for those meddling humans,... well, it's absurd. Perspective. We lack it. 10,000 years isn't barely a blink of time for this planet. So many landscapes and masses of organisms have come and gone and turned to dust. It truly does boggle the mind. The HONEST mind. One who has taken the time to see the world for how it truly is , and was.

One of my fav episodes of the series, so far. But even so, I still miss the great soundtrack from the original. That, second to Dr Sagan himself, is what truly separates this version from its predecessor.

The Godzilla ad wasn't too bad. Though I hope that's not really how he looks. Wouldn't that be lame, to ' out ' him as his is, in an ad, before the movie even came out ?

And a brief side note... I couldn't help but think as Neil was talking about the unbroken line of life, what an pro-lifer must feel about that segment. " Congratulations. You're alive ". Well, unless you were deemed an un-viable tissue mass. Then you're the weakest link, and have been terminated. Sorry.

See, 2 sides to every coin. As Obi-Wan said to Luke... Truth depends greatly on one's point of view.

Or, as Lionel Hutz would say ... " There's THE TRUTH, and then there's the truth " .

But I digress.

Different topic, but a solid example... remember the issue of school lunch programs, back in the 1990's ? The evil, mean GOP were said to have wanted to SLASH money for school kids. DRACONIAN cuts for the poor kids, while the RICH got more tax breaks.

All completely false. MORE money would be going to school lunch programs. More than ever before. But the rate of increase was going to be less, due to budget concerns.

Back to the polar ice. Yeah, over a very short, brief time, it's declining. So what ? How do we know it's not doing that anyways, all on its own ? These things occur in cycles. Always have, always will. Long after we're gone. I think it's too early to push the panic button. Just as it was too soon to rejoice that AGW is " over ". Give it 50, or 500 years. It is very pessimistic thinking that it will take 50 years to solve a physics problem for sunshine, carbon dioxide, air, water and earth when physics problems are solved all the time when it is only called light, gases, liquids and solids.

Or, even more pessimistic thinking, you won't believe any physics solution until 500 years after the problem is solved, the prediction is made. The physicists' pretty mathematical predictions are merely numbers and graphs. You want real solid proof! Before you will believe engineers can change the world's climate you want engineers to actually change the climate with coal, petroleum and natural gas.

You are not being pessimistic enough. You should be pessimistic about what could go wrong with obtaining real, physical proof that physicists are right, the engineers of coal, petroleum, and natural gas are wrong, and there really is a predictable greenhouse gas effect.

Math and research. The planet has gone through many changes over time as you say. We now understand why, can take accurate measurements and make educated determinations as to what is effecting things enough to make changes occur. We can measure changes in our atmosphere, or how much pollution is in our oceans, we can detect levels of toxins and so on.

You said, "Give it 50, or 500 years. Then we'll have a better idea." The 50 to 500 years is pessimistic. How about 5 years? Physics will have a prediction you will trust in 5 years? Or are you just not trusting any prediction made during your life that the greenhouse gas effect really exists? You're waiting for experience? We're not talking some weird theoretical physics. This is just thermodynamics calculations on a worldwide scale.

The physicists might not be as clever as they think they are, but you are not realistic to think physics will keep getting the calculations wrong for the next 5 years. Even more likely, since the greenhouse gas effect was mentioned in 1980's Cosmos, and there has already been 34 years to make the calculations, the preliminary answers that physics has now are very similar to the answers available in 5 years. Or 500 years.

Yes, we are. The reason this is so difficult to nail down is the amount of calculations that go into all this research is off the charts. What I would remind doubters is that everyday everywhere the calculators are shown to be right.

The only reason there is even a dispute is because the facts are a threat to industry.

It was physicists and mathematicians that gave us industry and money making in the first place. They are always first to know. Business people come along after the mathematicians to take advantage of the newest discoveries and when it is more profitable to change they do, and not before. Hence the markets will dictate change. What good are the markets when the planet is no longer habitable?

Hey AURAPTOR:

Yes sir I do remember, but if memory serves me it was more about how often they occurred in the past like Volcano's and deterring by time when things would occur again and not so much on the physics. We understood a lot less then.

Do you know what I am poorly attempting trying to say?

Hey AURAPTOR:

Scientists come up with a hypothesis based on the information they have at the time and then set out to prove or disprove it. If it can not be disproved it becomes a theory. Only the facts win out in the final analysis. Industry can buy all the experts it wishes but the facts will win out in the end. I only hope that end comes before ours.

What's the rub, clean air and water are better than dirty, there is no argument to be made against that.

The sheer level of stupid wafting off of this post is.... well.... uniquely rappian.

Hard to argue with those facts. Another point is wounded and treasury. Off the charts.

One caveat though. Obama was for the Afgan. war so his numbers are a little higher than 4

Stunning at the sheer idiocy coming from Storybook.

*Fair enough *

But ignore all that. Just insult the messenger because you cannot STAND dealing w/ facts.

Reality truly hurts your widdle brain.

I get that. I really do.

SHOCKING!

Others, not so convinced.

Examiner Editorial: Obama White House peddling climate fear instead of facts

President Obama and Big Green environmentalists have failed in recent years to convince the American people that global warming is a serious problem requiring draconian regulation, skyrocketing electricity costs for consumers, and lowered expectations of future prosperity and economic opportunity. So now they are now trying to use scare tactics to get their way. It's not a pretty sight, at least for those who think public policy should be based on facts rather than fear. To illustrate, the two following paragraphs cannot both be true.

The first paragraph is from Obama's National Climate Assessment report: “Summers are longer and hotter, and extended periods of unusual heat last longer than any living American has ever experienced. Winters are generally shorter and warmer. Rain comes in heavier downpours. People are seeing changes in the length and severity of seasonal allergies, the plant varieties that thrive in their gardens, and the kinds of birds they see in any particular month in their neighborhood.” This is all allegedly caused by burning fossil fuels - oil, natural gas and coal - which injects carbon into the atmosphere, trapping more heat, thus causing global warming.

Compare the preceding paragraph with this October 2013 statement by the SI Organization, a private-sector technology firm that provides the U.S. Air Force and other defense and national intelligence agencies with worldwide daily and long-range weather forecasting:

“There have been many forecasts in the news in recent years predicting more and more extreme weather-related events in the U.S., but for 2013 that prediction has been way off the mark. Whether you’re talking about tornadoes, wildfires, extreme heat or hurricanes, the good news is that weather-related disasters in the U.S. are all way down this year compared to recent years and, in some cases, down to historically low levels.”

Rappy oh no, your cover is a fake. Dude I'm so sorry.

Sorry, a TIME Magazine Cover Did Not Predict a Coming Ice Age

A doctored TIME magazine cover warns of a coming ice age. But the reality remains that the world is warming, thanks chiefly to human action
