Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Ah-HAH! I had a notation "Dave ________ (Pizmo?)"...there was another, a "Rick ________" that I never figured out, either. Thank you Piz/G, I really appreciated that--you gave more than any other single person, and there are now whole swaths of marsh grasses in Lake Pontchartrain growing lush and beautiful, providing the nursery for endangered plants and species, helping the Gulf repair itself and helping to provide protection against another Katrina ( http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2002/of02-206/env-overview/habitat.html).

One lunch break, they took us on a short airboat tour of the area they had re-planted the year before. It was absolutely astonishing how much it had grown, something I will never forget. Pissed I left my camera at camp that day. I still get regular newsletters from Big Branch (the National Wildlife Refuge we worked out of). Aww, now I'm getting all teary...

And of course, as I said at the time, the woman who led the group (and did as much work as any three of the rest of us!) turned out to be a Browncoat, so we spent a lot of time together. We truly are everywhere...!

As an unrelated aside to this threadjack, I'm watching "Bones" from the beginning via Netflix and giggled when one of the characters cracked wise to another "Your robot reminds me of you. You tell it to turn, it stops, you tell it to stop, it turns. You ask it to take out the garbage, it watches reruns of Firefly." I'm sure I'm not the first who was started and laughed at that.

ETA: Oops, I found it:

(youtube.com/watch?v=Tsq64XTH_N0 with the inevitable " http://www"; in front-- why do my Youtube clips never come out anymore, dammit?)

It's only boring to those low information voters, or those who buy into this admin's line of go-se, perpetuated greatly by a silent media. ( or worse, that Amb. Stevens wasn't murdered - http://newsbusters.org/blogs/jeffrey-meyer/2014/05/15/eleanor-clift-tr

)

I guess al-Qaeda didn't kill nearly 3000 civilians on 9/11 either, huh E ?

IRS targeting , VA hospital scandal, wiretapping of journalists... this WH has a Watergate level story come out almost like clockwork, only the MSM refuses to pay attention. Can't be bad mouthing our messiah , now could we ? Wouldn't be proper.

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The picture, not the event, you doofus! Overstatement is like black humor, extreme situation used to illustrate a simple point >>> as in you using that picture <<<. The original point was about protestors disrupting Anthony's daily commute. Not exactly Tiananmen Square is it?

Oh okay. I didn't intend any humour, and still that photo poignant and distressing.

Not it wasn't Tiannanmen Square we were discussing, but intended to demononstrate the validity of protest as a means of bringing change. Whether it be change from tyranny (I know Americans love that word) or things that are just unfair and need changing.

The other sites I've been on, some I still am, my experience has been similar to Nickerson's:

Then apparently I am an inherently destructive influence on any moderated board I go to. Or, indeed, any unmoderated board as well.

Oh wait.

But seriously, every moderated board I've ever been to I've watched collapse because of power struggles between the mods. 15 years of internet, 10 boards I was involved in more than a month. Same result. Some of them even started out unmoderated, became moderated, and then predictably everything went to hell.

Back to lurking.

Well I raise it because its not a word that is used much over this neck of the woods, but I have found it a common theme in American discourse.

I for one enjoy much of the television and film that you have brought to the world, so you can't be all bad.

Same here, and I been doin this since the days of dial-up ASCII BBS's.
You start modding, the GIFT kicks in, all hell breaks loose, you wind up with a revolution and no matter which "side" wins, your board dies.

Most epic example of this was TheHighRoad - which kicked *me* off cause I dared take moral issue with the notion of mass extermination of muslims, mind you...
Which made it that much more ironic that when that secret backroom, sell-em-down-the-river deal(1) got blown out of the water, it was by someone of that belief, although his own reasons had nothing to do with that and he was every bit the crook folks painted him as, therefore leaving ZERO moral "High Ground" for *ANY* of em, which made it actually entertaining since absent that factor it was all just throw popcorn and root for carnage itself.

-Frem
(1) Note: it was the only time I've ever known Oleg to lie, and that fact of itself was pretty damn apalling.

I stay, 'cause I know sooner or later, a really important story will come up.

Like when the Kitty saved her little Boy from the vicious dog. Amazing!
And now, they want her to throw a baseball?

Actually, I already jacked that in on the Alec Baldwin thread.

Heh - when I said "low" I meant low on the list, like don't worry about it, and certainly no apology needed. I new it was a misunderstanding. When I say cartoonish I mean, physically extreme, like in the cartoons. Think Popeye picking up a train and throwing it at a dragon. The site of that lone person, looking pretty frail but unafraid. Facing down 1 tank would have been extreme enough, but 4 tanks?

Don't feel dim MD....

No reason to stop the conversation either.....

I think we're far from uncovering the truth to why any of us come back...

Well... I'm pretty sure I know why I do, but I'm totally twisted.

I wanna get to why any of you still come back here....

WTF man?

Do Right, Be Right. :)

You're not dim and the concepts and words are not that difficult, so what could it be? I think like others, you just don't want to understand, or what I've typed doesn't fit your expectations. Or it's personal.

I find this often to be the case.

I am not immune to bias. I try to be open to re-examining my own actions to check for this kind of thing in myself. But sometimes the people on the other end just don't make themselves worth the effort.

I maintain my previous stance: the reason I come back to RWED is because here I can be honest with posters of differing views in a way not allowed in real life. I think this is true of many RWED posters. Further, I think some posters go to great lengths to create... oh, I mean, to *enjoy* this opportunity.

The narrow "array" of social opportunities in my area, my unwillingness
to seek & create new ones ... in spite of the emphasis on politics, REWD
is easier, more interesting.

Hmmmm ... and there are some fairly entertaining characters in here.

Lighten up, Oonj.

As it happens, I've been on a few other forums for many years--in one case, fifteen plus, in another over ten. They have moderators, and a good portion of the people who were on them when I first got there still ARE, having never been driven off by the kind of shit that goes on here.

Me, I miss

Agentrouka
Byte
Anthony
CantTakeTheSky
HKCavalier
Kwicko
OldEnglandry
Peacekeeper
PhoenixRose
Shinygoodguy

And so many others whose names I've forgotten by now...some of which still pop in now and again, but not much, from what I see. But then, I'm not on much either, so...

I'm also sad to see how you've changed. I thank Haken for keeping FFF alive, but I think there are two sides to your point.

You really think it's worse here? I thought you left the main firefly board because there were a bunch of conservative mods abusing their power and they sent their followers a-trolling on mental health sites you were moderating.

This is an interesting theory that I have not considered before.

I have oft wondered why there were so many Libtards here, but I usually shrugged it off as just the ignorance and poor education of youth, who are drawn to Sci-Fi TV. But it did always seem a higher concentration of uneducated and inexperienced (aka Libtards) for those who could think somewhat logically (such as Sci-Fi fans).

So the above indicates there was another board about Firefly (I knew there were several others), and there were moderators there who the most extremist libtards broke rules enough to alienate and get banned or something. So that may be why such an unbalanced disproportionate amount of libtards migrated here.
