You are sensitive to the sugar problem because your kid is diabetic. It what you relate to, it's YOUR mission...I had a friend that GUZZLED sugar and she weighed HALF of my weight and still does and still guzzles sugar. I NEVER had ANY sweets in my house before hubby and I still weighed 220 lbs and worked TWO jobs and never ate lunch. I should have been a size two but I wasn't. I don't know why and neither does anyone else....

Believing biology is as simple as avoiding sugars IS THE PROBLEM.



While I'm once again irritated by your slamming of my hobby when I'm a healthy weight, which I give you a pass on because you've mentioned that your mother basically let you be raised by video games (which I'm assuming based on your follow up comments did not cause your health issues), I think I have to agree with you here.

I have seen no rhyme or reason in nutritional studies. I have seen incredible amounts of justifications and poor sample sizes and short time frames. Nutrition right now is an easy grant money pseudoscience that could be useful, but the food companies have their fingers so deep in the pie that no real information comes out of those studies. Maybe it's cholesterol. No. Maybe it's fats. No. Maybe it's salts. No. Maybe it's gluten. No. Maybe it's sugars. No.

I must agree that nutrition seems to be a strongly person by person case, and that any sensible approach to nutrition must be individualized. And that right now, that sort of individual approach that would actually be useful for people is too expensive for most people and their HMOs, so what we get instead is pop culture, bad science, urban myths, and fad diets.

And I also have to agree about fat shaming. My grandmother is very overweight, and she is an excellent person. Many of my friends are fat. And I've seen people who are overweight who can make themselves aesthetically pleasing through fashion and makeup - which I think is what that boils down to for everyone far more than body type.

My plan for tomorow...

Stop off at Wa Wa and buy coffee with SUGAR and milk and a pack of smokes.

For lunch, what ever catches my eye in the vending machine, the little pizzas have hit the spot lately

Then pick up a meatball sub on my way home, take a shower then eat the sub and wash it down with a few BEERS while watching TV and burping.

After I get done with the sub I'll light up a smoke then drink more BEER.

My plan is simple but it's mine.

I'm not slamming YOUR hobby, you are an adult and of course may do what you wish. I am closer to the kids than you and I see it IS a problem FOR THEM. And I never said I played a lot of games, I said my mother wanted me too. I played Wolfenstein all the way through and two sega games that I never finished and that was it. Couldn't do all the sitting. Saw a T-shirt the other day that said "Let me tell you about all the video game awards I have" or something to that effect. Gaming don't accomplish much, is my problem, and it does mess with kids' brains it the other problem. People here already can't interact on a basic level, you put games and phones in the mix you drop the collective IQ quite a bit.

I've played games since I was four years old. And it did affect my brain development, but not negatively. Games are both escapism AND self-improvement and personal empowerment. It bettered my vocabulary, my motor skills, and my problem solving skills. It also changed the way I process dreams - I am completely lucid even when asleep. Which itself has an affect on how I interact with the world when awake.

Perhaps the problem you're seeing is people playing the wrong games, though even that doesn't quite get into it. And there are many other childhood pastimes that tend to traditionally involve sitting and focusing and eschewing social interaction for long periods of time, such as reading and writing and school.

And on the subject of the video, the guy had ONE problem- injury based arthritis. That can get better, and there are a TON of treatments. I CAN'T stop sneezing (up to 132 as of right now) I can't stop my intestinal disorder (13 times as of right now)
I can't breathe, I'm gorked out on meds, my heart is racing, I'm in pain, and totally wiped out... and THAT was at 11 o clock this MORNING. I still have to get up, cook dinner and take care of my family...


I'm NOT- I REPEAT- NOT!!!- going to get better. All the quaint little videos and motivational crap are not going to change my reality...

I agree with a lot of what you say here. Nutritional studies are very poor and have been very compromised by interference from various food industries.

The doco "The Men Who Made Us Fat" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2337202/ is a must see for anyone interested in what the hell happened to our diet 20th/21st century.

Including how we've been conned by nutritianists calling for us to lower our fat intake, and the reaction from food companies, producing low fat food laden with sugar and other artifical susbstances that are terrible for our health.

Also the impact of corn syrup being added to food as a sweetener. Not happening here as much.

I think while somethings are compromised and unclear, what is clear that eating a diet that consists mainly of fast foods, sweetened carbonated drinks and processed foods will affect your health, including but not limited to weight related health problems, while including more fresh fruit and veg in your diet will improve your health.

The rest - how much sugar/fat/gluten/dairy/wheat/carbo/meat should you eat to be healthy is pretty unclear.

I agree with those who say eat/live to be as healthy as you can.

Move your body as often as you can.
Drink water without anything in it.
Eat fresh fruit and veg often.

Everybody can do that.

I did all of those things - even tried to write my own dictionary at one point. So I do know the difference, thanks.

Educational books aren't top sellers either. They don't have to be to have intellectual merit.

I took Shaolin Chu'an Fa and my sifu also taught Tai Chi. That totally counts.

I was concerned what I had to say would seem controversial. I'm glad to see my suspicions aren't off base.

Agreed about the fresh foods. Living healthy might be a bit of a spectrum though.

Of course it is. Chronic ill health, as described by Wishimay and Ikiki - sorry to hear about your plights - means that everything is a battle, exercise, eating well, not being seeping in negativity can all be incredibly difficult.

However, giving up on helping yourself isn't the answer either. You might not be able to do 30 minutes of exercise a day, but you probably can stretch and build in some kind of activity periodically.

And Wish, you may not be able to help your husband understand about the impact of his food intake, you can make some personal changes about what you eat. Even small changes can make an impact, or stop the creep of things getting worse.

No worries. Not meant to be insulting, but apologise if I overstepped the line.

I wanted to add, that for me weight isn't the issue but being as healthy as you can be, whatever your circumstances. That's the support I was trying to give. I have gained weight over the past 15 years, and my diet is extremely healthy. I'm still pretty fit, and not in the obese category, just bigger than I used to be. I have a friend who would be classed as chubby and she runs marathons and is vegan. So I do get that it's an individual thing and that having poor health sucks and that also I have no idea about what it would be like to face your struggles. So point taken.

WISH, I think scanned thru the thread rather quickly. I THINK I understand where you're coming from. I agree... doctors know DICK.

When a doctor FINALLY took our concerns about our dd seriously and took an EEG, they were horrified. The neuro- a kindly, youngish Indian lady, walked me thru her differential dx, a list of things she considered a ruled out... Well (she said) it could be absence seizures, but they're usually more rhythmic. It could be Lennox-Gastaut, but lacks the polyphasic... It could by atypical migraines, but it doesn't look like that either... It could be West Syndrome, but... It could be ESES, but that's too rare as she crossed it off too

Well, the one thing that was "too rare" was the one thing it was. But I was young and stupid, and I thought doctors knew better. Ultimately (after 8 years) I found her dx online. Another few years after that, I found a partially successful treatment.


Since then, I've seen doctor flub a number of diagnoses in our family... the doctor who told hubby to eat less salt to solve his cardiac arrhythmia, without finding out first that hubby was eating only 800 mg/day and working out/sweating like a horse... turns out, hubby's a salt waster and needs MORE than average just to keep his heart pumping!

I've correctly dx one woman online with Hashimoto's encephalitis, and one boy with autoimmune attack on his potassium channels. Point is, out of 7 billion people on the globe, SOME of them will have that one-in-a-million dx. And when doctors (and everyone else) thinks that they know, or pretends that they know, it's very very frustrating.

It's a constant source of wonder to me how I can hate this internet thing for what people let it do to their lives and love it for the great equalizer it is. Knowledge is the only real power we have over our lives.
Most people will never know how much of a scam modern medicine is and they just keep portraying it as this all-knowing fix-all and it's a sad day when a person realizes what it could be, but isn't...
Congrats for having the guts to do what you needed to.
And thanks for the sodium comment, I'll have to look into that, as my heart problems get worse in the spring when I start sweating- and even though my doc has accused me of eating too much salt(SEVEN TIMES) I know it's not possible because I only eat a max of twice a day. I literally CAN'T be getting too much salt...

I watched it and thought especially the points made about snacking were insightful. Eating between meals, sugary junk in particular, is a recent phenomenon. And it has become so wide-spread. I know it is the number one factor in my range of weight fluctuation. Exercise has no impact one way or the other. Whether I bought that bag of gummy bears (because once I have it, it will be GONE) makes all the difference.

The problem is that modern life styles almost require you to snack, and the easiest food available will always be crap. If you're over-worked, have a long commute, too little sleep, not enough money... you're going to have irregular meals, cheap junk and you'll eat even more simply because you'll substitute sleep with sugar.

Will power is a lot to ask when you're exhausted but still have to get things done. (Hello, students and single parents!) And that just keeps warping the next generation's relationship with food.

I'm very grateful to have enough factors in my life that facilitate a healthy food intake. I wasn't raised that way, I lucked into roommates who insisted on shared home-cooked dinners. Best thing that very happened to me, health-wise.

Yeah, same thing with my chest pains and my psychological health.

I've pretty much given up on doctors. At this point I think most of them are about as scientific as clerics in a church.

I would posit that it's not so much doctors anyone wants access to, but medication. Which has it's good and bad sides.

Do It Yourself Biology and medication movements are all the rage and they can do some awesome stuff on the cheap in homemade labs using internet knowledge. But at the same time they really have to know what the heck they're doing.

And of course some people might want the medication for less then medical reasons.

Not sure it's anyone's place to judge, persons are going to make their own choices, and I suppose ACA supporters would see it as making sure they have the most available choices while bargain hunting.

Well, it's simple, really. First of all, what you're seeing is an optical illusion. I have NEVER been unreservedly supportive of ACA, I think it's just tossing people into the maw of big insurance companies along with a sweetener of government money. What a fucking sellout.


But, when you need standard medical care, you NEED standard medical care. Doctors practice what I call 85% medicine, as in "This will work for 85% of the people 85% of the time" If you're in that 85/85, you're golden, and doctor's services are vital.

Broken bone? Golden!
Bacterial pneumonia? Golden!

It's only when you're out of that 85/85 that you run into trouble. Even then, for successful treatment it's still necessary (in most cases) to find an insightful doctor- one who is a research MD PhD or who is willing to do research for you. The treatment that I found online worked, but only for a while, and the side effects were so awful for our dd she couldn't stay on that regimen. Fortunately, we lucked into an MD PhD, and after a few years he took a flyer on a unique approach and it worked. He told us he was going to write a paper on it.

Well for what its worth, its the easiest thing in the world to eat too much salt, even eating only twice a day. Every bit of processed food, from bread, spreads, sauces, condiments, biscuits (cookies to you) and cakes are LOADED with salt. So unless you are eating fully fresh food, you are eating a truck load of it.

A few years ago, I went on a 6 week health plan, no sugar, no salt, no dairy, meat, alcohol, caffeine. Wow, basically you guessed...it was salad, salad and more salad. Hubby was about ready to kill himself (he did the plan too) but I did lose a lot of weight and I felt amazing. The biggest surprise was how hard it was to lose the salt because it meant that unless I bought something labelled SALT FREE at a health food store, every condiment was a no go. And when you are eating only salad, boy do you need some condiments. About 4 weeks into it, it was like something magic happened to my taste buds, I could really savour foods that had previously seemed quite bland, the sweetness of carrots for example. At the end, we went back to a more livable version, which included many parts of our normal diet, but everything tasted incredibly salty...even a slice of bread.

BTW, I know my advice is not welcome, but have you ever thought of eating more than two meals?

My experience too. It wasn't until I left home that I became more concious of eating fresh food and how good it could taste. Thank you to my Greek and Italian descendant friends who taught me how to cook properly.

"convenience food" as I have posted before, is largely a con. Supermarkets and food companies have shaped our belief system and out habits around how we prepare food. Of course that means buying the products that they market us, prepared, processed foods because we think they are convenient.

The fact that most of us now eat our main meal in the evening, which somehow we are required to cook and clean up for after work in most cases has been a massive shift as well. Has that changed in Germany too? I know southern Europeans still tend to eat a bigger meal in the middle of the day.

I also like the Asian way of eating, lots of smaller snacks (but freshly cooked at hawker markets) throughout the day and which is so cheap you dont need to go home a cook a meal.

It's one of the major appeals of collective living for me, that cooking and cleaning up afterwards was only something you had to do once a week for example. Bring on the refectory, I say. I love a bit of institutionalised eating.
