I used to get a flinch reaction every time GWB spoke, and quite frankly I've gotten to the same point with Obama. Here is the transcript of his speech at West Point.

http://foxnewsinsider.com/2014/05/28/transcript-video-obama-lays-out-f
oreign-policy-west-point-commencement-speech

I couldn't help but notice the wandering hypocrisy, like he had lost the thread of his own propaganda ...

Quote:

In fact, by most measures America has rarely been stronger relative to the rest of the world. Those who argue otherwise — who suggest that America is in decline or has seen its global leadership slip away — are either misreading history or engaged in partisan politics. Think about it. Our military has no peer.

Yep, we spend more on our military than the rest of the world COMBINED. Nobody else - not even Russia!- has bases ALL OVER the world!

Quote:

America continues to attract striving immigrants.
Oh, that was STRIVING? I thought that was STARVING.

Quote:

Russia’s aggression towards former Soviet states unnerves capitals in Europe
Yeah, because Russia has troops, bases, and missiles all over Europe. (not) And yet, somehow, Russia is the aggressor.

Quote:

From Brazil to India, rising middle classes compete with us, and governments seek a greater say in global forums.
Yes, god help us if other governments have a greater say!

Quote:

The question we face, the question each of you will face, is not whether America will lead but how we will lead
Because, yanno, whatever we decide is right for the world is right for the world.

Quote:

not just to secure our peace and prosperity but also extend peace and prosperity around the globe.
HAHAHAHA! We've been blowing this smoke for 70 years or more. Replaced 50 governments. Somehow, we still haven't gotten this right!

Quote:

Today, according to self-described realists, conflicts in Syria or Ukraine or the Central African Republic are not ours to solve.
In particular, they're not ours to start.

Quote:

Here’s my bottom line: America must always lead on the world stage. If we don’t, no one else will. The military ... is, and always will be, the backbone of that leadership.
Again, we have the right to determine what's right for the rest of the world? And if they don't agree, we turn on the force?

Quote:

This weekend, Ukrainians voted by the millions. Yesterday, I spoke to their next president. We don’t know how the situation will play out, and there will remain grave challenges ahead, but standing with our allies on behalf of international order, working with international institutions, has given a chance for the Ukrainian people to choose their future — without us firing a shot.
The Ukrainians did that for us, thanks to pressure from that organ of American dominance- the IMF.

Quote:

... a third aspect of American leadership, and that is our effort to strengthen and enforce international order. After World War II, America had the wisdom to shape institutions to keep the peace and support human progress, from NATO and the United Nations, to the World Bank and I.M.F. These institutions are not perfect, but they have been a force multiplier. They reducing the need for unilateral American action and increase restraint among other nations.
In other words, these institutions have been the United States' tools of foreign and economic domination.

Quote:

I believe in American exceptionalism with every fiber of my being.
Yep, I kinda noticed that...

Quote:

we’re putting in place new restrictions on how America collects and uses intelligence, because we will have fewer partners and be less effective if a perception takes hold that we’re conducting surveillance against ordinary citizens.
If Snowden hadn't come forward, the WH would STILL be OK with the NSA collecting information on... well... everyone. In fact, the NSA is STILL collecting information on everyone. Nothing has changed.

Barry's speech at West Point has been called the absolute worst received speech by the cadets and audience for a sitting President - ever.

The tepid applause showed us all just how little they admire the man.

You see nothing good about this country but apparently would not like to live anywhere else either because here you stay.
Have you LOOKED AT the immigration laws of other countries??? Because I HAVE. So yeah - here I stay.

AFA doom and gloom- as the LARGEST military in the world (as Obama pointed out repeatedly) and the LARGEST ECONOMY for 70 years, and the ONLY NATION with forward bases nearly everywhere, and a military devoted to forward power projection, we have not only the greatest authority but also the greatest responsibility for the way things are the way they are. Because of that, we also have the greatest potential to make things better for the world as a whole. It's a little hard to get around that fact.

Not ONE thing Signy is saying is untrue. And I share her anger & frustration that our country is seemingly endlessly being steered towards the simplistic solutions our mighty military avails to us, and AWAY from the non- "let's blow shit up" alternatives.

No,and no. The issue was MILITARY BASES. Not 'advisors'.

Japan, England, Germany, S. Korea... I'm certain that if we were asked to leave those countries, we would. As we left the Philippines , after Pinatubo erupted, and they decided we didn't need to bother rebuilding the 2 airbases.

Miker, I agree with your objective analysis
WHAT "objective analysis"? That's been my point with MIKER all along... lots of feeling, lots of statements of opinion, no analysis.

For example, MIKER wonders, apparently, why I'm so negative about the America.

Did you know that my country isn't actually called "America"? At least, not by most people who live in the western hemisphere? That's because there are three Americas: north, central, and south. "America" is really known as Estados Unidos, sometimes del norte. The people living in this nation aren't "Americans" because we are ALL Americans, but gringos. But it's pretty typical of "Americans" (ie citizens of the United States) to subsume the hemispheric name to themselves.

Then, there is the list of nations with American military bases. Did you know there are 800+ military installations - including bases- ALL OVER the world? I guess - speaking of WW2 land-grabs- no other nation was really AS SUCCESSFUL at grabbing land as we were! No nation is our peer, as Obama so correctly pointed out.

And then, there is the number of governments toppled, and the number of people killed. From pre-WW2 to today, the slogans have changed - white-man's burden, remember the Alamo, anti-Communism, falling dominoes, the war on drugs, global war on terror, democratization, R2P (responsibility to protect, which sounds like white man's burden redux), back to the war on Russia- but the result almost always winds up the same:

dead people, tyrannies, and poverty. (Germany, Japan, and France were exceptions) Wow, are we clumsy at bringing peace and prosperity to the world, or what???

There was a poster here- Geezer- who is (was?) pro-military, who challenged me along those lines. It was my estimation that the USA was directly responsible for at least as many deaths as Stalin, if not more. So I assiduously looked up, and posted, all of the "interventions" that we engaged in - not even counting the massive genocide that was the birth of my nation. EVERY nation south of the "American" border was destabilized and overthrown - if not outright invaded- by the USA. The governments that we toppled were mostly democracies: Honduras and Guatemala, the so-called banana republics
Quote:

In the mid-1870s ... Keith founded the Tropical Trading and Transport Company: one-half of what would later become the United Fruit Company (Chiquita Brands International, created in 1899 by corporate merger with the Boston Fruit Company and owned by Andrew Preston). By the 1930s, the international political and economic tensions of the United Fruit Company had enabled it to gain control of 80 to 90 per cent of the U.S. banana trade. Nonetheless, despite the UFC monopoly, in 1924, the Vaccaro Brothers established the Standard Fruit Company (Dole Food Company) to export Honduran bananas to the port of New Orleans in the Gulf of Mexico coast of the U.S. The fruit exporters were able to keep U.S. prices so low because the banana companies, through their manipulation of the producing countries' national land use laws, were able to cheaply buy large tracts of prime agricultural land for banana plantations in the countries of the Caribbean Basin, the Central American isthmus, and the tropical South American countries—and, having rendered the native peoples landless through a policy of legalistic dispossession, were therefore able to employ them as low-wage workers.
, Brazil, Chile (for copper, backed by the big copper-users like Kennecott copper, Ford, and IBM), Nicaragua, etc etc. It was our support, training, funding and arming that led to death squads and "disappearances" throughout this hemisphere.

Indonesia and East Timor- Kissinger and the CIA overthrew democratically-elected Sukarno and gave his successor- Suharto- the arms with which a million people were butchered.
http://www.rense.com/general32/handsfull.htm

Vietnam- 2-3 million dead.

By my count, we (the United States, "America") had either directly killed 15 million people, or we installed dictatorships (where there had previously been democracies) that did the torturing and killing for us. According to other counts, the USA is responsible for about 50 deposed democracies since WWII. But if you don't believe me, or "them", all you have to do is google nation's name+ CIA (fill in the blank with whatever nation you want) to see our history. However many people you think the Soviet Union killed, however many democracies you think the Soviet Union deposed, however many people you think the Soviet Union put under the thumb of a brutal dictator... we did just as much if not more.

Those are the facts. They are hard facts that "Americans" prefer not to be acquainted with, which our school system and our media prefer not to mention. Liberals and right-wingers alike deny the history. Non-imperialist nations- even our allies- can't really comprehend the historic scope of this responsibility. It wasn't until I looked all of this up myself- in response to a post by Geezer- that I realized the breadth and depth of our impact on the world. Nonethless, they are facts.

Now, we can start with those facts and move on to a real analysis... Who benefited from our militaristic interventions? Who was killed? Who got wealthy? Who was impoverished? Is this really what we wanted? Is this really what we intended? Where do we go from here? But those previous emotional and ideological statements are NOT an analysis.

About sums it up for me, although I long since gave up "expecting" any better. I don't enjoy Sig's consistent focus on the negative myself, but I understand her frustration.

Just to add that our being "invited" to house military bases in other countries isn't exactly as cut and dried as all that. Today's "warfare" includes more economic, interdependent and geopolitical aspects than in times past, but it's just as valid when it comes to a wealthy, powerful nation spreading its influence. We ARE still an empire, albeit in my view a failing one, and we still wield influence just as every empire before us has. I also don't think any other nation, given the wealth and power we have, has ever acted any better in its time. My argument is more with governments, politicians and human nature than a focus on the actions of those in this country alone.

Yep. And I showed that this was sort of like blaming the U.S. for all the deaths in WWII because we participated.

As for the FREELY ELECTED DEMOCRACIES in South and Central America and places like Indonesia, I showed that many of them were either not freely elected, or had one free election before the folks elected decided that future elections were just too much trouble.

Please read it carefully.
And that doesn't include our "interventions" since then.

I overlook nothing. However, didn't we drop a couple of nukes on civilian cities, killing about 200,000? Not to stop the Japanese, but to show the Russians that we were crazy sons of bitches who could, and would, drop them in their tracks if they tried to advance across the Pacific? We backed "anticommunist" Gnl Suharto who killed about a million of his people. Our little Vietnames adventure killed 2.5-5 million Vietnamese civilians. In Guatemala, we armed and trained the government that killed 200,000+ Mayans, creating "the silent Holocaust"

Further searches don't turn those threads up. However, feel free to look for them yourself. Except Geezer. He'd rather (dishonestly) accuse people of being "liars".

MikeR and Geezer

I'm curious if you have the balls/ honesty to acknowledge the truth of SignyMs claim that the US has intervened militarily in many countries - even democracies - that posed no threat, all around the globe and over a long time.

Because there are certainly enough facts to back up that claim. If you could acknowledge those facts which are incontestable, and accede to that claim, it would go a long way to giving you some credibility. Which both of you sorely lack.

But if not then I have no further interest in your posts on this topic. Because you seem to have no interest in discussing facts.

(what I expect is that MikeR will post something unrelated and Geezer will bail - that's their pattern)

"This is your point of view ..."

Which you seem to agree is based on reality. Well, I suppose I could google each and every one for you and post the info. If I did, would you read it? And if it indicated the US was an aggressor and killed people for territorial, economic or power gain, would you concede that the US is and has been very very wrong in a vast majority of instances? Or would you shrug it off and keep harping on how great and well intentioned it is?
