Russia Halts Gas Supplies To Ukraine

Quote:

The reason for the collapse in talks: Kiev wants to pay $268.5 per 1,000 cubic meters of gas - the price it had been offered when Yanukovich was in power - but, in a compromise last week, said it would agree to pay $326 for an interim period until a lasting deal was reached. Moscow had sought to keep the price at the 2009 contract level of $485 per 1,000 cubic meters, but had offered to waive an export duty, bringing down prices by about one-fifth to $385, which brings it broadly into line with what Russia charges other European countries.

In other words, the delta was less than $60, and certainly a "fair" offer to Ukraine considering it is what Europe pays. However, it wasn't low enough for Kiev, which certainly is out of money once again having to spend the bulk of its IMF/EU aid to keep its military armed, and the only logical outcome - one in which the country would no longer receive something for nothing - transpired.

So I wondered how this fit in with my predictions...

http://www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?bid=18&tid=57588&p=2

Well, some of these things are happening out of order, and I missed others completely. For example, I would have never imagined that Kiev would have had such big brassy balls as to hold an election when fighting affected 15% (or more) of the voting population, and then declare a winner. Or for that winner to undertake a military assault on its own people. But the Kiev government would have never done all that with without assurances from the West that all would be well; that Kiev would have political cover and military support.

And I never would have predicted Putin to show such restraint. Seems he was too wily to get sucked into a battle that the west seems to want to provoke... at least, so far.

I am sure you’ll disagree signym but I don’t think the Ukraine should pay the same as Europe. After all the oil and gas going to Europe gets their through pipelines running through Ukraine. If I were them I would tell Russia to get all those pipelines out of their country if there is nothing in it for them. Funny how you suggest it is the other way around? Its deals like this that made the Ukraine turn to the West in the first place.

I checked out the predictions link. Nope nothing by you that predicted this.

Yes, pipeline carriers usually get a "transit fee" remitted to them. OTOH, the original price was negotiated by Orange-revolutionary Yulia Tymoshenko, and the price under discussion was a huge drop from the original negotiated price. And, since Russia is owed a HUGE amount of money, and they control the gas, they can hold whatever position they like. Which is what they're doing.

There were a number of predictions that I made that didn't happen as I expected, discussion of which which I added to my previous post. I'm not sure if you would consider this gas shutoff to be a counter-sanction in disguise, or not. It sounds to me like you would, since you don't seem to think that Russia is bargaining in good faith.

Again you are not seeing the whole picture. What about the contract Russia must have had with the Ukraine allowing for its navy to establish basses in Crimea. A beautiful seaport, high priced real estate area. Or did they get that for free also? If Russia can change its deal for oil why can’t Ukraine change its deal also regarding Crimea? After all, I bet they stopped making their payments a while ago and counting.

How it is you think Russia gets to charge Ukraine the same rates for oil as it does Europe, when the only way for the oil to get to Europe is to travel through pipelines that traverse Ukraine. You suggest that because Ukraine owes Russia money Russia gets to stop paying the “transit fee”. How the hell does that work?

I absolutely think Russia is bargaining in bad faith.

If I add to the discussion you're going to say I'm tag-teaming with Signy. Now, I happen to be home today. And I know she happens to be at work right now. So despite your snark, she's not going to be replying very soon. And because of it, I refuse to discuss anything of interest with you. Except to point out when you boo-boo. And honey, calling it OIL when everyone who knows even a little knows it's natural gas - well, you just keep your ignorance flag flying high and proud for all to see.

Ukraine is pretty dependent on Russian gas imports, so Russia can charge whatever it likes. It charges very generous rates when there is a government in Kiev that it likes, and then hikes them massively when there is a government in Kiev it doesn't like.

It's their gas, they're entirely within their rights to do it. But no amount of bribery or extortion is going to put a pro-Russian government back in Kiev any time soon.

It's not personal. It's just war.

Russia is dependent on Crimea so the Ukraine can charge what ever it likes in rents if Russia wants to stay there. It's part of the Ukraine and since there is a government in Russia it does not like it should hike its rates massively.

See how that works?

Ukrainians have a proven history of being able to find alternative sources of heat and energy. As long as there are synagogues to set ablaze and Gypsy wagons to burn, they'll be fine during the cold Winter months.

Judging by the costumes of those participating in the burning it was about the late 1800's or so you speak of. FWIW it was a negotiated price that included the discount for Crimea, and was ratified by both countries. It's hard to say that it was forced on the Ukraine and that they got no consideration in return.

I only had to read the first paragraph in your link to see it happened in Crimea. It is the Russians doing it is it not. Those who side with Ukraine are not saying or doing anything that will make them targets there.

Russia's military clubs for teens: Proud patriotism or echoes of fascism?

Clubs such as Our Army have been cropping up across Russia at a fevered pace amid heightened tensions with the West and with former Soviet republics that have defected from Moscow's orbit. In just two years, the loosely aligned groups have grown to involve hundreds of thousands of Russian youths between the ages of 13 and 18, their organizers boast.

It's been five years since Zotov founded Our Army, one of thousands of "military-patriotic youth organizations" answering President Vladimir Putin's call for preparing the next generation of Russian soldiers as the Kremlin flexes its reinvigorated military muscle abroad.

I will say one thing. By threat of death and control of media and a steady diet of lies and fabrications Putin seems to have galvanized his country. Compared to our infighting and stagnation it's impressive to see so much movement in one direction, even if it's motivations are sinister, selfish and rotten. My God I hate our politics.

it's easy to galvanize hate G and remember the country is the recipient of the worst kind of propaganda. The kind designed to whip it into a frenzy. If you print the truth you are closed down or worse yet, killed.

Yes our country's politics' leave a lot to be desired at the moment. But remember the Russian people gave up their freedom to this guy who dictates what is to be. Our politics at the moment is driven by fringe elements of the people, not the politicians. That's a big difference. They gave up the rule of law to this guy who steals as much as a quarter of the countries wealth with his cronies. Russia is a country where if you speak to loudly about Putin you wind up dead. Sadly Russia is a gangster (Mafia) state and nothing more. You have to add to that, a bully to it's neighbors.
