Yellowstone road melts in 'hot spot' created by supervolcano heat and rising temperatures

DEVERSE

Hey, Ive been in a firefight before! Well, I was in a fire. Actually, I was fired from a fry-cook opportunity.

Seems a bit weird to me looking at the pictures.

Asphalt mix to make roads is heated to about 200F to be soft enough to be used easily. The picture of the road looks like it would have been somewhat higher than 200F to have melted (it looks like it boiled away which is about 650F for asphalt). But, there are trees nearby as well as grass and other plants in the same area that do not seem to be effected by heat.

Heat isn't the only cause to make the road look like that. Almost like there was a vehicle fire in that spot.

It's a good thought, but if you look close at the picture, the dark sheen of soft partially melted tar is visible down that entire stretch of road, with damage to the road surface caused by vehicle traffic stripping the top layer off visible at the front as well as another spot further down. A vehicle fire would only have that in one place.

I am not sure how or why the plants are surviving those temperatures. Some of the grass seems affected, but the trees don't. My best explanation for that would be that several kinds of pine trees in the west have adapted to be resistant to high temperatures due to forest fires. The bark of the tree gets singed, but that only causes the pinecones of the tree to pop and crack open, releasing the seeds. The trees actually can no longer reproduce without fire. Perhaps this feature also imbues them with some resistance to constant geothermal heat from the ground they're growing in.

It’s hard to tell what is going on just looking at the pictures, or what the dark sheen is caused by.
I noted that the oil sheen is rather straight and along the traffic path at about the same location that vehicle tires would be on both sides of the road; rather than undefined and wandering across the entire road and shoulder. It just looked strange that heat would follow along in a relatively straight line in the center portion of the road. I can see the white shoulder markings clearly down the entire stretch of the road and it doesn’t look as if the heat went anywhere near the side of the road.
I sort of wondered if it is just a poor asphalt mix and the oil and aggregate are separating (which can happen at low temperatures if the mix is wrong) and vehicles are tracking it down the road.

I have some misgivings about the trees and plants adapting to absorbing the amount of heat necessary to melt asphalt. Melting asphalt isn’t accomplished at temperatures much below boiling and I wonder if a plant could adapt to absorbing water at near boiling temperatures let alone at the temperatures required to melt asphalt.
The small plants (such as what appear to be weeds and grass by the road) would not likely be nice and green very long at elevated temperatures and the ones in the picture look fairly healthy.

As I said, it just looks a bit weird to me.

Could be. And if that's the case, then you no longer need 200 degree fahrenheit temperatures. Higher temperatures yes, but ones a heat resistant pine could withstand.

A good point about the location of the streak as well - perhaps when the road is busier or when there's been animal crossings, a traffic jam of cars may have trapped heat radiating from the asphalt under the undercarriages. That plus geothermal activity might be sufficient.

Asphalt absorbs heat. Trees grow next to roads and parking lots everywhere and many times you see damage done by vehicles due to the hot day. Trucks tear up parking lots all the time in summer making delivers. Kick stands on bikes sink into the asphalt. Just like sand at the beach some things get very hot under the sun. This reminds me of that.

It does worry me that it just may be time to see an eruption that will surly destroy this country.

I'd think that those in Jellystone park would know whether or not a stretch of road was affected by a geothermal hot spot or just a bad mix of asphalt.

The area has erupted before & will do so again. It's just a matter of time.

G's posted link suggested it was a combo of both. A geothermal hot spot and the temperatures at the time.

A combination would make the most sense to me. It would explain the surrounding vegetation and the particular pattern of melt on the road.

Sidenote: AURaptor's link, G just quoted him.
