"Russia has now amassed around 15,000 troops along the border with Ukraine, the U.S. ambassador to NATO said on Friday, and the Pentagon warned that movement of Russian heavy caliber artillery systems across the border into Ukraine is "imminent."

The Pentagon went further, suggesting Russia is escalating the military action there. U.S. Ambassador to NATO Douglas Lute offered the troop estimate during a security forum in Colorado, saying there were "now up again over about 15,000 Russian troops amassed along the border with Ukraine."

Col. Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman, said the U.S. has seen the powerful rocket systems moving closer to the Ukraine border and they could be put into the hands of Russian-backed separatists as soon as Friday. He says he doesn't have an exact timeline.

U.S. officials warned this week that they had new evidence that Russia intended to deliver heavier and more powerful multiple rocket launchers to the separatist forces in Ukraine. Warren told reporters Friday that the delivery could happen at any time, adding "it's that close" to the border.

Warren also said that Russia continues to fire artillery across the border into Ukraine.

"For the last several days Russian forces using Russian artillery from Russian soil have conducted attacks against Ukrainian military positions in Ukraine," said Warren. "This is unquestionably an escalation from a military perspective."

He declined to say what impact the attacks have had on Ukraine's military, but said the attacks are coming from the southern border area, near Rostov-on-Don.

Warren said the U.S. has seen no indications of Ukraine firing back into Russia and there have been no reports of civilian casualties. He said the number of Russian troops along the border continues to slowly but steadily increase.

The Ukrainian army on Friday said soldiers had come under artillery fire from the Russian side of the border overnight and were attacked by rebels in several other places in the restive east."

I guess once your troops shoot down a commercial airliner and kill 300 people, there's really no point any more in even trying to hide what your ultimate objective is.

Speaking of the EU, it's interesting that this week's European Golf Tour event is The Russian Open.

And then there was this headline today ...

FIFA Committed to 2018 World Cup in Russia

FIFA's marketing campaign will go something like ... 'C'mon fans, fly in for the football! The Russians probably won't shoot your plane down.'

Two destroyers I thought. Also training them how to use them. Not to worry because someday they will see them again. At their surrender.

Vlad can do what ever he wants, the rest of the world will only complain about it. He isn't afraid of Barry and doesn't care what the U.N. says. He'll throw some money at the flight 17 familys and then keep doing what he wants. I wonder if Barry knows that Vlad makes him look like a whiney wuss.

I read the French say they would back out on the second one, but were going to follow through on the first. Then I goggled to see what the latest news was - things have gone up and down depending on who you read, "yes, both" "no, neither" "depends on what Russia does."

Most recently from a French news site you can see that (like here) it's gotten down to squabbling and bickering.

Latest update : 2014-07-23
French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius responded with a strong dose of sarcasm to British criticism of France’s planned sale of two warships to Russia, saying the UK should put its own house in order before criticising others.

"British Prime Minister David Cameron said Monday that Paris’s plan to press ahead with the €1.2 billion ($1.7 billion) order of two French warships following the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in Ukraine would be “unthinkable” in Britain.

“The English, in particular, were very pleasant so to speak, saying, 'We would never do that'. But I told my dear British friends, let’s talk about the financial sector,” Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told TF1 television after returning from a European foreign ministers meeting in Brussels.

“I am led to believe that there are quite a few Russian oligarchs in London,” he said.

When asked if that meant Britain should take care of its own business first, Fabius said: “Exactly.”

Hollande said on Monday that Paris would go ahead with delivery of the first carrier by the end of this year but was ready to review the second delivery, due by 2016.
“It’s a contract that was signed in 2011. There is an international rule that is worth the same nationally. Contracts that are signed and paid should be honoured,” Fabius said."

I hope they put a lot of hidden cutoff switches within the electronics. Unbelievable they are building ships that have the potential to be used against them. But this is the sad state of affairs the free world has adapted. I have a major problem with them training the Russians as well.

I read in these threads how Obama is at fault for being week. That, that is the message he sends to the world and that is why all the turmoil. I believe they are clueless that the relentless acts against the President by the Republicans, is received by the rest of the world as a signal Obama could not do anything if he wanted to because Congress would never back him.

I think he proved this when he submitted a request to Congress to bomb Syria. Republicans were constantly clamoring for him to provide help to the rebels. He new Congress would not back him so he requested that Congress vote. What happened showed the world they could do what they wished because America was divided within.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Is any of this true? How would we know? You'd think after 'dead or alive' bin Laden who suddenly was declared 'not very important', 'WMD' Iraq that turned out not to have any, 'red line' Syria that didn't cross it, and 'confident' declarations separatists fired a missile that were quietly changed to 'we'll never know' - you'd THINK after all that, you all would be just a little skeptical when the WH-StateDepartment-UNambassador-Pentagon-NATO starts jawboning.

Me, I'm going to wait for facts.
