Holy SHIT guys. AU, while it was commendable to post about the double standards in the NFL, you're not actually helping your case with all your "hilarious jokes" and "cold hard truths."

Magons, you freaking KNOW better.

All in all, I give this thread a score of 20 face palms out of 25. We haven't had someone start a flamewar over something entirely unrelated yet, and no one's set up a three ring circus, but I have the elephants at the ready.

If we try a little more We - Can - Go - All - The - Way!

Ravens officials began the damage control with their initial post-punishment support of Rice last week. It was the job of the team's senior vice president of public relations, Steve Byrne, to craft a delicate blog post about the running back's drive for redemption on Baltimore's website.

That story Friday was a fair vehicle to share owner Steve Bisciotti's extended statement on Rice's major off-field misstep. But the tone of Monday's follow-up story was all wrong.

As much as there was an outcry for the league's limited discipline after Rice violated the personal conduct policy by being charged with assaulting his now-wife, Janay, there's no way the initial reaction should be to applaud his cheers on the field.

Sure, the team can't control football-hungry and football-focused fans from rooting on Rice in camp again. But trumpeting it by incorporating a video and Facebook promotion is unncessary and unwise.

There's been the feeling from the league and the Ravens that Rice was a good guy who just did one bad thing. Unfortunately, domestic violence toward a woman isn't your typical one bad thing.

I thought you were being sarcastic, that’s why I asked. I have spent an inordinate amount of time lately dealing with people who post exactly that way and are serious. It is also possible for someone to be very reasonable except about something like color.

Very glad to receive this post because I felt you were one of the reasonable ones posting here, which is why I found it so disturbing.

Sorry, it’s good to see I was mistaken.

And another victim is claimed !!

Quote:

NEW YORK -- ESPN has suspended outspoken sportscaster Stephen A. Smith for a week because of his comments about domestic abuse suggesting women should make sure that they don't do anything to provoke an attack.

Smith's commentary occurred during a discussion on ESPN2's "First Take" last Friday about the NFL's two-game suspension of Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice following charges he assaulted his now-wife. The remarks attracted widespread attention, including a stinging rebuke online from a fellow ESPN personality.
Smith issued an on-air apology Monday, saying it was the most egregious mistake of his career.

A day later, ESPN took action. The network's chief executive, John Skipper, told ESPN's staff in a memo it was done after a "thoughtful discussion" about appropriate actions with men and women in his company.

"I believe his apology was sincere and that he and we have learned from what we've collectively experienced," Skipper said.

Smith will not appear on "First Take" or ESPN radio until Aug. 6, the network said.

During the Rice discussion, Smith alluded to women in abuse cases when he said,

"Let's make sure we don't do anything to provoke wrong action ... we got to also make sure that you can do your part to do whatever you can do to make, to try to make sure it doesn't happen again."

Shortly after Smith's remarks, colleague Michelle Beadle responded on Twitter that

"I was just forced to watch this morning's First Take. A) I'll never feel clean again B) I'm not aware that I can provoke my own beating."

Beadle, host of ESPN2's "SportsNation," continued with a series of tweets. She said that "Violence isn't the victim's issue. It's the abuser's. To insinuate otherwise is irresponsible and disgusting."

Smith, during his apology, said it wasn't his intention to say that women could be responsible for their own abuse. "It was not what I was trying to say," he said. "Yet the failure to clearly articulate something different lies squarely on my shoulder."

Smith didn't explain the point that he was trying to make.

ESPN frowns upon its personalities attacking each other on social media or other forums. But it did not announce any punishment for Beadle.

This is where the concept of chivalry gets it all wrong.

Of course it is wrong to use violence. Steve knows that. I think all he was trying to get across is if you hit someone they may hit you back. Sound advice.

Now if the guy, especially such a large guy hits a women after being hit it is still outrageous behavior. That said if a women were to engage me physically who was not a loved one or family I might chose to do the same thing. I have no intention of being pummeled by someone of either gender.

Never hit a women and I have been around for quite a while. I'm just saying times have changed and I see women behaving badly all the time on the news and internet. As a matter of fact I was in a store just two days ago where one young lady was trying to convince another that to mix it up on occasion was beneficial. She was about 5'6 200 pound or so. I am older now and someone who see's this change and wonders what I would do if attacked by a women. Many are a lot bigger than I. I determined that if need be I would defend myself. Like I said I have no intentions of being pummeled by anyone. No apologies there.

You should be able to understand from my post that I state if attacked. If a women comes at me and I feel threatened I will defend my self. We live in a time where women carry guns and knives just like the guys. I don't watch them but women fighting videos are all over the internet. It is quite possible to become engaged in an argument and before realizing it find yourself under the threat of physical violence.

In the video about abortion that was just posted in one of our threads you see it first hand. Now fortunately the girl regained her composure quickly but if she had not what is a person to do.

No I don't think if I am looking at serious bodily injure I am going to just stand there. I prefer to end it quickly if I can. I will try to avoid it but if I can not I will do what I must to protect myself.

I find it disingenuous for someone to say if they are being pummeled by a woman, especially not a loved one they will not strike back. Bullshit....

It is what I have been referring to from the get go. You just can't argue with what I am saying so you are baling rather than agree that there may be times when fighting back against a women attacking is necessary.

I am not nor have I ever been politically correct. You make the statement it is wrong to hit a women under any circumstance. I have pointed to The incorrect nature of that statement.

Some of you people are hung up on this troll and straw man shit. It implies I am saying what I am to draw you out, to trap you. Not the case. This is how I see it and if I am accosted out in public by a women and have little choice. I WILL clock her.

Treatin' girls like they can do no wrong even if they slap or punch a guy they're the fairer sex and need doors opened for them and all that is chivalry. And it actually perpetuates gender roles that oppress and inconvenience MEN, if not outright get them killed.

Like that whole women and children first thing in a rescue situation? Or how we only ever expect men to be soldiers what because I guess men are supposed to be expendable or something? That ain't right. :(

I understand what you are saying. I do though believe in chivalry. I think it is good to temper society. I do believe women and children first. I just don't think all women all the time disserve that consideration.

I would point out that I don't think painting women's military uniforms and equipment pink will save them from being shot or shot down.

I dont need doors opened for me, but I dont want tbem to be slammed in my face either, nor knocked down on the way through. Manners and courtesy in how you treat others, special consideration for people who need it...elderly, frail, disabled, very young, pregnant women.

No one should punch anyone.
People have the right to defend themselves against being physically hurt, but that should be reasonable. Restraing/deflecting are okay. Knocking unconcious and dragging someone around is not self defence - its violent rage, no matter who started it, its wrong. No, I'll not post the video, but it's damn clear that this thug got away with slugging a woman , and knocking her out cold.

Pretty apparent to all why she went along w/ the marriage and won't be testifying against her now husband.

Video shows Ray Rice hitting now-wife: Should the NFL change Rice's suspension?

New video released Monday morning apparently shows Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice hitting his then-fiancée in a casino elevator.

The incident happened at the Revel Casino Hotel in Atlantic City in February. The two were married the following month.

In the video obtained by TMZ, Rice appears to punch Janay Palmer and knocks her to the ground. He is then seen dragging her limp body out of the elevator. [Warning graphic video: Click here to watch]

The NFL released the following statement: "We requested from law enforcement any and all information about the incident, including the video from inside the elevator. That video was not made available to us and no one in our office has seen it until today."

And breaking news...

Quote:

Ravens cut RB Ray Rice after release of video

BALTIMORE (AP) — Ray Rice was let go by the Baltimore Ravens on Monday and suspended indefinitely by the NFL after a video was released showing the running back striking his then-fiancee in February.

The grainy video, released by TMZ Sports, shows Rice and Janay Palmer in an elevator at an Atlantic City casino. Each hits the other before Rice knocks Palmer off her feet and into a railing. Months ago, a TMZ video showed Rice dragging Palmer, now his wife, from the elevator at the Revel casino, which closed Sept. 2.

The Ravens said earlier Monday that they never saw the new video. Hours later, they sent out a one-sentence release:

''The Baltimore Ravens terminated the contract of RB Ray Rice this afternoon.''

So, a 2 game suspension AFTER apparently seeing the video is the best the NFL could muster ? And only when it is made public , does anyone actually do the right thing ?

Wow.

Each hits the other

but but but - she hit him!!! He had to defend himself from her. It all makes sense now. She should be arrested for battery - or for being stupid enough to marry him.

I think that said the NFL suspended him indefinitely.

Unfortunately, I still meet many women who do crave this. Apparently, smacking your partner shows that you care enough, that you are invested in the woman, or the RELATIONSHIP enough. If you didn't tune her up every once in a while, that means the guy just doesn't care enough. And of course, the make up sex is GREAT. Or so they say.
It is depressing.

Yes, but not initially. 2 games was all they felt was needed to make this go away, and that was why I started the thread when I did in the first place.

I have to believe that the NFL knew of this elevator video from early on in the investigation. They STILL chose to only suspend Rice for 2 games. Only when the video was released did they jump on the indefinite suspension.

It had been described in great detail - nearly frame by frame - back when the first video was released, so it's not as if nobody knew about this or saw it.

The NFL is a racket, the very definition of an organized crime syndicate. These idiots are lionized and paid millions for being aggressive, for getting the big hit on another person, and then people act surprised when shit like this comes out.

Hey, at least he didn't straight-up murder her like some other players have. Well, he didn't murder her quite yet, anyway.
