REAL WORLD EVENT DISCUSSIONS

The NFL - beating women less offensive than talking bad about gays, or getting free tattoos.

Meanwhile, Fox & Friends offered this sage advice: "The message here is, take the stairs."

Nothing about not hitting women, or not beating your wife (or your then-fiance). Just take the stairs next time, because presumably there's no camera there to catch you punching the woman you supposedly love right in the face.

Per usual, you're wrong. The elevator cam recording wasn't released until just recently. So, only a few people actually DID see it.

Point I and damn well everyone else was making is that the NFL obviously had seen this video too, but chose to only suspend Rice for 2 games, since the public only saw the outside recording, and there was some speculation as to what actually took place before the elevator doors opened.

The NFL is a racket, the very definition of an organized crime syndicate. These idiots are lionized and paid millions for being aggressive, for getting the big hit on another person, and then people act surprised when shit like this comes out.

Hey, at least he didn't straight-up murder her like some other players have. Well, he didn't murder her quite yet, anyway.

Then don't watch.

And I'm pretty sure it was MSNBC who said take the stairs too, so I guess that's sage advice from everyone.

SHINYGOODGUY

The NFL Commissioner should be fired and the hypocritical NFL should stop pretending that they care - next month is Breast Cancer Awareness month. They should instead support the Violence Against Women Act.

It has come to light that the NFL saw the tape, of the assault, from inside the elevator (well before yesterday). It showed a professional athlete (weighing approx. 220 lbs) cold-cocking his future wife with a left hook. He lied to his teammates that she attacked him (sound familiar!?) and that he was only defending himself. He's lucky, after her head hit the elevator rail, that she didn't sustain brain damage, or worse, died as a result of his cowardly attack.

Yes, he should definitely lose his "job," but he should also be in jail.

As for the commissioner, fry him in boiling oil. What is wrong with this guy? Granted, the image of the NFL is at stake, but have some compassion for women. That could easily be his mother on the receiving end of that haymaker.

Good for the Ravens for letting this thug go.

Well, let's wait for the court system to render its full judgment before we act. Wait, the courts already did that too?

Ray Rice is lucky he didn't call his wife a gay slur while she was knocked out. Because then the NFL really would have been mad. He might not play this season. Based on the precedent the Minnesota Vikings set with Mike Preifer, he certainly would have missed more games for merely uttering a gay slur than for knocking out a woman.

What if Rice had paused while dragging his wife's body out of the elevator and sent a mean text or tweet, then the NFL would have really laid down the law, too. Remember mean words are much worse than mean acts. Or, God forbid, imagine if Ray Rice had gotten free tattoos at Rutgers and the NFL found out about it. Then, like Terrelle Pryor, he might have faced a five-game NFL suspension. Hell, Pryor could have knocked out two women and only missed four games.

And don't even get me started on the NFL's absurd drug-testing policy suspensions. If you smoke too much weed you can miss an entire NFL season. That's the equivalent of knocking out eight women. (Ten if your team advances deep in the playoffs). How in the world is it eight times as bad to smoke too much weed as it is to knock out a woman? Is there any person on earth who agrees with these disparate punishments? Keep in mind, weed is not even a performance enhancing substance, it makes you worse at the game. Here's what the NFL's drug policy should be -- use any drugs you want if they don't improve player performance.

That's your risk, we don't care. But that's another column, this one is about stupidity, the NFL's in particular. Somehow we've reached the point where violent acts are much less severely punished than mean words or texts or tattoos or bad jokes about gay people during practices.

So first you say I'm wrong "per usual", then you confirm what I said - that the second video was known about and had been seen.

Here's ESPN's Chris Mortensen, in July:

Quote:

We saw the TMZ video of what happened outside—when he was dragging her out unconscious—but inside, I'm told from those who have seen the video, it wasn't pretty. In fact, she attacks him—we don't know the reason why—and he strikes her, strikes her hard. And her head—according to the sources I've spoken to—struck the rail inside the elevator and she was unconscious. [1]

So how exactly does that make me wrong?

Here's my exact words again, just in case you were incapable of comprehending them:

"It had been described in great detail - nearly frame by frame - back when the first video was released, so it's not as if nobody knew about this or saw it."

2 different things to have known about the video, and it having been seen. And seen by EVERYONE. If due diligence was done by the NFL, then a 2 game suspension after seeing this video was beyond a joke. That's been MY point all along.

The NFL , hoping this video would never see the light of day ( why, I can't fathom ) chose to go w/ the 2 game suspension, and hope it would all blow away.

Thankfully, that didn't happen.

Take the stairs ? Actually, that wasn't 'Fox and Friends', but the dirtbag Brian Kilmeade who said that.

Okay, you can't provide any evidence that MSNBC made that same statement, but rather than admit you're wrong, you have to start trying to split hairs.

What show was Brian Kilmeade on when he made that joke? Who pays him? As an employee of Fox & Friends, does he represent the show when he's on camera?

Should he be fired for not taking the video more seriously? After all, it's what you insist on for others, isn't it?

How isn't ray rice in jail ? A guy does that to a woman , and the judge decides to treat this case w/ kid gloves, and goes w/ pre-trial diversion or what not. Good grief.

And almost as disgusting as the assault was how he treated her limp body, as he sorta dragged her out ...half way out of the elevator.

No concern, no urgency , no compassion for what he'd just done.

It was more like..." Yeah, here we go again."

On the flip side, how can the NFL suspend him indefinitely ? They JUST came out w/ the rule that for the first offense, the player misses 6 games. Well, why not carry out the sentence here ? They already changed their mind once, from 2 games to indefinite suspension , so why didn't they just tack on 4 MORE games, and make him the poster child for their new rule ??

What a total cluster !

Have you not noticed this was an innocent black unarmed young fella who raised his arms after being attacked by the black woman?
Why are you not defending him? Have you turned your back upon your brethren (this means brothers)? Did you not know he is not guilty until proven guilty? He has not been proven guilty, has he? He is innocent. Are you planning to round up a posse and lynch the poor, unarmed innocent defendant who was defending himself against the antagonistic unruly violent woman??
It is he said she said - you can never ever believe the statements of anybody who attacks poor innocent unarmed defenseless black males.

Huh. ESPN is an "on-the-fly fifth-hand source" that someone has only "heard rumors about."

I was given to understand that sportsball fans respected ESPN as a viable source of information. I did not know they were given less credence than freebeacon or the Washington Times.

Wow Roger... you really don't want your 44 million $ a year job after all, do you ??

BREAKING NEWS !!

Quote:

Roger Goodell made a very bad assumption when he chose not to contact the casino to request a copy of the Ray Rice elevator video -- because law enforcement tells TMZ Sports ... that would have been perfectly legal.

Goodell said Tuesday he did not contact the Revel Casino because it was his understanding "the casino is prohibited from turning over material to a third party during a law enforcement proceeding" -- namely the criminal case against Rice.

But Paul Loriquet, the Director of Communications for the New Jersey Attorney General, tells TMZ bluntly, "No, it's not illegal."

To be clear ... our question was very specific: "Is it illegal for the casino to show or provide this material to a private entity in an ongoing investigation." His answer, "No, it's not illegal."

Mind you ... the NFL has some of the best lawyers in the country. It's inconceivable they didn't do basic legal research to either validate or invalidate Goodell's assumptions.

TMZ broke the story ... Goodell NEVER even bothered to ask the casino for the video -- something he's now acknowledged.

The Baltimore Ravens are as or more culpable than Goodell and the NFL. The ownership and the idiot coach did nothing except actually defend Rice five months ago by parsing and speculating about every aspect of the assault. I wonder if they ever even asked Rice what happened inside the elevator before he dragged out his unconscious fiancee. I wonder if they even asked that question to themselves. This is the team that let murder participant Ray Lewis play for them as Captain.

As for Goodell, he will be gone pretty soon. TMZ and the Atlantic City police have his balls in a vice. The "inside" video should not have even been necessary in this case, but its release has unleashed an unstoppable momentum of its own. There are several other NFL players playing now with assault charges and/or convictions. As The Carpenters sang ... "We've only just begun."

And now, Dallas owner Jerry Jones is being sued by a stripper for sexual assault. And there's pictures of them together. Oh my!

I didn't see this, but heard about it...

“Two years ago I challenged the NFL community and all men to seriously confront the problem of domestic violence, especially coming on the heels of the murder-suicide of Kansas City Chiefs football player Jovan Belcher and his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins. Yet, here we are again dealing with the same issue of violence against women.

Now let's be clear, this problem is bigger than football. There has been, appropriately so, intense and widespread outrage following the release of the video showing what happened inside the elevator at the casino. But wouldn't it be productive if this collective outrage, as my colleagues have said, could be channelled to truly hear and address the long-suffering cries for help by so many women? And as they said, do something about it? Like an on-going education of men about what healthy, respectful manhood is all about.

And it starts with how we view women. Our language is important. For instance, when a guy says, ‘you throw the ball like a girl' or ‘you're a little sissy,' it reflects an attitude that devalues women and attitudes will eventually manifest in some fashion. Women have been at the forefront in the domestic violence awareness and prevention arena. And whether Janay Rice considers herself a victim or not, millions of women in this country are.

Consider this: According to domestic violence experts, more than three women per day lose their lives at the hands of their partners. That means that since the night of February 15th in Atlantic City more than 600 women have died.

So this is yet another call to men to stand up and take responsibility for their thoughts, their words, their deeds, and as Deion [Sanders] says, to give help or to get help, because our silence is deafening and deadly.”

Yup, part of my business to deal with the like, so I don't like seeing the kind of ignorant shit being said about 'women stay because they crave it'. It's insulting, and it's wrong. Again, there is a lot of information out there on the experiences of women who stay or leave family violence situations. They need support either way, not judgement.

I like James Brown and Deion Sanders, but if they want to start somewhere, start with Rap music. Calling women bitches and ho's is the foundation of the rap music industry, the largest music segment in America. Obama's pal and confidant JayZ didn't make his hundreds of millions by singing about his tractor.

Jongs - There is a clear and vast disconnect between the rap music culture and ... I'll say it, decent society.

The stated goals and concerns voiced by James Brown don't sync w/ much of today's black culture. Just ask Bill Cosby. He tried to speak out , and was roundly criticized by his piers. Not all , but a great many. Very disheartening.

Utter nonsense.

I think you need to re-read what JSF said, and put away your knee jerk reactions to name call here.

I am disgusted when people make claims that women enjoy violence from their partners

Yes, as I mentioned before, I too am distressed and disgusted when women make these claims that they feel the emotional need to experience violence in order to believe their partner cares about them or loves them. But just because their claims and statements are distressing, disgusting and depressing, does not mean that I should discount, disregard, dismiss, or disrespect their feelings, needs, or societal hangups. You should do more to listen to these women if you really care about them, instead of insulting them and degrading their perspective as if it should not be stated or exposed to the light of day.

You're just a perpetrator in sheeps clothing. Worse than the man who punches and kicks because you don't face the consequences that they do, but in terms of being an enabler, you are right up there. I feel for the women in your life, and I hope they find the strength to piss you off real soon.

So a little information on why women (and men) stay in abusive relationships. I don't expect JSF to take this on, because he so obviously an expert (in his own twisted mind) on the experiences of women who have been abused, but maybe others can take note.

When societal attitudes are judgemental of women who have been abused (or raped) either in family settings or outside of them, a woman is less likely to disclose to others and MORE likely to stay in the situation. That's something that many older people talk about, that there was no choice for them but to stay. Often police wouldn't even attend where there was family violence, and if they did, they did not treat it seriously. Luckily, I live in a much more enlightened place in time and history, and that is far less likely.

Other reasons are more psychological. Some may be a bit like Stockholm Syndrome http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_syndrome although I dont think that is all that common.

More common is that women are just suck in that cycle, with a mixture of coercian, threats, guilt tripping keeping them there.

For others, leaving may mean extreme economic hardship including homelessness, for themselves and their children. That's why establishing refugees and housing support is so necessary.

The other huge reason why women stay is that the most dangerous time to be in a situation of family violence is around separation, this is when most women get killed statistically.

So sometimes women stay and put up with it. They may even appear to support the perpetrator, well it's kind of dangerous to challenge him, dont you think? This may be confusing for an outsider who has never experiencd abuse, or may have experienced abuse but had a different response (a bit like ex smokers being judgemental)

You have a choice in how you respond.

Judge the woman for not leaving - you are therefore perpetrating the cycle, and in fact contributing to it. You are yourself apart of the abusive cycle. Your words excuse the perpetrator and place the blame on the victim.

You can condemn the behaviours of the perpetrator, and be supportive of the woman, even if you can't understand her decision making. She's more likely to find the strength to go eventually and in her own time in this scenario.

I"m wondering if anyone here got a chance to hear or see the responses by Raven's fans, who showed up at the game wearing Ray Rice's old #.

One woman actually said that if she struck her b/f or husband, she'd expect to be hit back.

Blind adherence and loyalty to one's team or tribe, what ever, makes folks do and say some strange things.

Other comments...

"There's two sides to every story," said the 23-year-old waitress from Baltimore. "I saw the video. That's their personal business, and it shouldn't have affected his career. I don't agree with domestic violence, but she's still with him, so obviously it wasn't that big of a deal. Everyone should just drop it."

Ravens fans male and female, young and old, arrived for Thursday night's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers debating the events that have affected their team over the last few days. Their once beloved running back has been kicked off the team and banned by the NFL after a video surfaced that showed him punching his then-fiancee - and now wife - inside an Atlantic City hotel elevator.

I saw those interviews and they don't surprise me. I loved Andrea Tantaros' response when she said the women interviewed proudly wearing their Rice jerseys were either drunk or stupid or both.

The NFL didn't fire Ray Rice because he beat his wife. They fired him because a video of it was released. Up until that video went viral, they didn't give two fucks about him being a wife beater. Hell, there's another player who was CONVICTED of beating his wife, and he never lost his job as a player for the league at all.

The NFL doesn't care about women at all.

I had heard of several companies doing similar promos of giving away stuff for those who turn in their Ray Rice gear.

This doesn't sound like a NIKE sponsored deal. He had a contract with NIKE, which was cancelled, but I find it hard to believe they'd advertise 'wife beater' swaps for his jerseys. Maybe local merchants, but NIKE ?

I wonder if there were any videos of Michael Vick killing those dogs who lost their fights, would he still be playing ?

Perpetrator?
Because I grant the assumption to adult women that they can really, really, actually, make decisions for themselves, they can be self-arbiters of their situations, they can be responsible enough to choose their own partner instead of having somebody else choose for them, they choose to not constantly seek out those who beat them? Accepting that adult women are capable of reasoning, thinking, deciding, capable of making choices, and not just dumb drones makes me a perpetrator? How quaint of you to let us know just how low your expectations are of adult females, that they can only be victims and unthinking baby machine drones.

I am beginning to understand why you so often refuse to err on the side of freedom - you don't even think women in civilized society should have or strive for the freedom to make their own decisions in their lives. I don't know if you think you are the proper arbiter of whom they should mate with, or if you think only their father or other males in the family should be the sole deciders for them, but you certainly seem to think women should not have the freedom to decide for themselves (because they will choose wrong, according to your definition).

Any judgement I have of them is downgraded when they seek out and crave violence and my judgement is upgraded when they reject such behavior.
So far, in my life, I have successfully resisted the temptation to capitulate to the women who want to fight, and just slap them around to satisfy them. Instead, I just reject these women and let them go find the violent guys they crave. Their need to be violent has been too repugnant for me to change to their ideal, no matter how attractive they were to me.

Nice try, but basically a big fail on your behalf. You're trying to wheedle yourself out of a nasty position, but you can't quite do it, can you?

Tell me, where are all these women you meet that crave violence and seek it out, and that you feel such personal contempt for? Are they women you know and have spoken to personally, or are they women you have heard about and made assumptions about? That is, do you look at women who remain in abusive relationships or have patterns of abuse and think they 'crave it' (your words in a previous post - nice one)

I've tried to post some information on how abusive relationships can function and some of the factors that may keep women, and men too, bound up in them, but it's clearly not something you can comprehend. I expected that it would be too complex for you and I was right. Easier to lay some blame, huh?

As for the other attacks upon me, well fair call, I've been laying the hobnails into your guts. But in response, they really just made me laugh, especially that I refuse to err on the side of freedom, which I take to mean the following
"if you do not blindly follow and accept every philosophy of right winged pundits in the USA, then you are a freedom hating commie and should be wiped off the face of the planet" To which I reply, 'guilty, your honour'

Kinda adorable when some folks confuse sarcasm for really lame humor.

oh well.

In real news, 2 more NFL players suspsended for off field violence.

Quote:

Hardy, a Carolina Panthers all-pro linebacker who was convicted in July on two counts of assault on a female and communicating threats, has faced no league suspension as he appeals that conviction. Last week, he played against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and recorded a sack.

Sunday morning, the Panthers deactivated Hardy, meaning he can't play against the Detroit Lions.

This comes after the Minnesota Vikings deactivated star running back Adrian Peterson in connection with his arrest on charges of reckless or negligent injury to a child. He is accused of disciplining his 4-year-old son by hitting him with a switch – a wooden rod or tree branch – causing cuts and bruises.

Frmr nfl player Chris carter was adamant that AP be kicked out of the game, while frmr nba star Charles Barkley was far more tolerant . No real consensus , but AP crossed the line in dealing out the lashing.
