REAL WORLD EVENT DISCUSSIONS

Why doesn't anybody here ever bitch about the gravity of the ever-increasing Texting While Driving outbreak?

There are more people being killed in their cars today because of texting while driving than there are because of driving while intoxicated!

I know a way to IMMEDIATELY end fatalities by texting while driving...

LIFE IN PRISON WITHOUT PAYROLL if you're found guilty of texting while your inconsiderate ass takes another person's life because it was THAT important to get your message about nothing to your friend while looking down and driving with your knee as your kid sits next to you in the passenger seat.

TWO reasons why this would work.

1. Although I feel that both behaviors are pathological, I do believe that chronic texters can wait 15 minutes before texting back or just pull off the road if they REALLY NEED to answer.

2. Where Anheiser Bush and Milwaukee Brewing company might have a TON of money to lose if the same law were instituted for drinking and driving, Telecom companies would have virtually nothing to lose now that every company offers unlimited texting plans.

Food for thought....

Thank you Brenda.

Now we got women in the fight, and either paranoid young women or sane older women to boot!

I'd love to hear from some of the youth here. I could be wrong, but I always assumed Rappy was at least 20 years older than I was. I hate to speak of a woman in the same way, but Brenda is at least my age to think this way of the issue.

Prove me wrong ladies.

I want to hear from people who text all the time except for when they're driving.

As a person who drives, I fail to see why my input would be of any less value than anyone else.

I do think the act of looking away from the road to read a text or surf the next is every bit as serious and dangerous as driving while intoxicated, maybe even more so. Why ? Because literally anyone can do it, at any time. Otherwise sober , alert, and capable drivers can get distracted in a flash and cause chaos and injury to themselves and others.

Think YOU can text and drive ?

YOU'RE WRONG! YOU CAN'T DO IT !!

So knock it the hell off.

From your title, you have apparently not read my posts on the subject.

In my state, the law for drunk driving is OUI or Operating Under the Influence, and "Influence" is not restricted to alcohol in the definition - it includes drugs, fatigue, and distraction. Thus distraction already included texting and mobile phone use before either existed. They only need to be enforced, which they aren't.

Texting while driving could be another way of God weeding out the stupid, but the problem with that is there are other innocent victims on the roadways.

I have often thought that driving drunk should be prosecutable as Attempted Negligent Homicide - the act of getting behind the wheel and starting to operate the deadly weapon is the Attempt. I think that texting while driving is worse, and far more applicable.

I also think that all companies, each and every one, which requires their employees to talk on the phone while driving, provide technical assistance and troubleshooting on the phone while driving, answer phones while driving, and texting while driving should be outed if not prosecuted, and in the most public manner. It seems sick that there seems to be no law specifically against this, and obviously no prosecution of these heinous companies.

People do a lot of things while driving that cause accidents. I've driven with a cell phone for 30 years and never had a problem, but I don't ever text. That's just asking for a disaster.

Hey JST,

I hadn't read your opinion on this before, but I do agree with it.

I believe the law in my state is very similar to OUI. It should be if it is not. I almost fell asleep behind the wheel about 15 years ago and opened my eyes in time to break somewhat quickly before running a red light with a lot of oncoming traffic. I wasn't close as to cause a scene by slamming on my breaks, but it could have easily gone very far south for a lot of people from there. I was completely sober. I just wasn't in a fit state to operate heavy machinery.

Stupid kid :(

I don't necessarily think that just getting pulled over while intoxicated should automatically come with a felony of intent to harm or anything, but I do think that Drunk Driving should be punished severely EVERY SINGLE TIME if it results in a fatality or a life changing injury to anybody else in any of the vehicles.

I'm thinking that 25-Life without parole is a just punishment, so long as it is given to any class or race or sex or national status or whatever. Same rule applies to everyone, always.

I wasn't even aware that companies required people to do troubleshooting and technical assistance on the phone while driving.

I tend to believe that most of the people who are talking on the phone while they drive and not at work are spending most of their time on the phone talking about nothing really that critical or important. They're just passing the time on the boring ride home. I'm okay with this if they're using a hands-free system and they're not drinking. 99.9999999% of their faculties are available to them, and they're able to concentrate on what's important when they need to. How many times have you heard somebody say "hold on a minute" when they got into a situation that was too heavy for them to keep the conversation up?

Working while driving though? First there's just the natural stress that many of us feel to some degree at work Then add all of the actual thinking that you have to do if it's a complicated enough issue. Maybe it's above your pay grade and you have to get 3 other people on the call?

That is a lot of shit to deal with while you SHOULD be focusing on your driving and the other drivers.

You had every right to cross that intersection because the light was green. That doesn't seem to me to be a great epitaph for a headstone after you were one split second late in your driving judgement because you were trying to get the conference call going when that drunk idiot ran the red light and turned you into paste.

I apologize if I made you feel that I believe somehow your opinion meant any less than any one else's Rap. I also apologize for kinda just being a dick and even saying that. I was really just giving shit to anyone who might automatically disagree with rational thinking about this subject simply because they argue with you about other things.

Not only is it so dangerous because anybody can do it, but think about what that fact means. I'm not saying that underage kids don't drive drunk, but it's not an entirely prevalent phenomena. They grow up having it hammered into them on a daily basis that drunk driving is bad. Whether it's school or TV or even somebody involved in a drunk driving accident in the family.

None of these 16 year olds ever had that about texting and driving growing up.

They were just given a car and a phone with a text and data plan and not even a word of warning from their parents. I believe that's only because the parents didn't really think about it until people started dying everywhere because of it.

Let's not institute the LIFE IN PRISON thing tomorrow, but let it be known that if you are found guilty of killing or maiming someone because you were texting at the time of the accident on or after October 1st, 2015, that you will be tried for murder.

What do you think about that idea Rap?

An interesting development in working life, the fact that people assume that you will be on call ALL the time to take their call. And then there are those people who cant sit in a meeting or an interview without constantly accessing their phone. I hvae an exec director who is constantly checking, texting if not answering her phone during meetings. It's so rude for a start. I feel like saying - is someone dying at home? If no, then turn the fucking thing off. But of course, I would be sacked.

Recent info on the brain shows we cant MULTITASK. We can't drive and conduct business meetings, or focus on the message that someone sent and what is being said in a meeting. It just doesn't work and we shouldnt expect it to. And its bloody rude .

People shouldn't be on their cell phones during a conversation, they shouldn't be on them at a service counter, they shouldn't be using them while at a restaurant, it arguably defeats the purpose if you use them during outdoor recreation, and people definitely shouldn't use them while driving.

People who say they can text and drive remind me of people who think they can drink and drive.

"But I only text at intersections!" Do you put your parking brake on at intersections? "No, but I'd notice if I was rolling or sliding." What if you get hit or you hit someone on accident because you aren't paying attention, shit happens even at a stop. "That would be the other person's fault." Do you ever carry over writing or reading texts after you've started moving? "Yeah, everyone does."

Your confidence is so reassuring. Tell me again what a good driver you are. /Willy Wonka Meme

Thankfully, my state has finally outlawed any non-hand-free phone use while in a car. This includes at stop lights. And so far, it is making a positive impact. When I do see people texting while they drive, I try to make a mental note of the license plate, pull over, and call them in.

Not everywhere. A handful of states (guess which color) still allow it. Texas actually had a bi-partisan bill that would have banned it - but Perry vetoed it, citing "personal freedom."

SIGNYM

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I text often, EXCEPT when driving. When it has been absolutely necessary to text (ie to check that daughter was safe at home because she won't answer the phone but she WILL text!) I've pulled off to the side of the road. But then, I have to switch from my driving glasses to my reading glasses, because when you get to me my age... heh heh heh...

There was a horrific train crash in LA because the engineer was texting.
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/washingtonpostinvestigations/2008/09/
conductor_in_deadly_la_train_c.html

A sheriff's deputy was texting just before his patrol car hit and killed a cyclist
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/jul/14/la-county-deputy-was-t
exting-before-fatal-crash
/

No matter WHAT people say, 98% of them CANNOT multi-task. (Altho there was a study that took a number of people - all of whom avowed they could text and drive at the same time- through a driving simulator with distractions, and found that 2% really can do both at the same time) Given the results, though, the overwhelming odds are that IT'S NOT YOU.

Distracted driving in general.... kids fighting in the back seat. Trying to negotiate something complicated on the phone. Getting blown. Putting on makeup. Texting. Worried. Sick. Drunk. Sleep-deprived.

Aw, lookit you, making an ASSumption without looking it up. Of course, you never look anything up, because you can handle reality, so no big shock there.

I doubt your claim about your state is even true, you are so consistently wrong about everything. But then, you don't say which state, so you can lie about it when called out.

But since you're a fuckwit, Ill fill in the blank for you - they're red states, you bloody idiot. Texas woulda been the first clue, if you actually possessed any reading skills.
