What is Enterovirus 68, the mysterious illness that may be sickening hundreds of children?

Health officials in at least 10 states have reported hundreds of cases of a respiratory illness that has sent scores of children to emergency rooms and, in some cases, even to intensive care units.

The culprit is believed to be Enterovirus 68 (also known as EVD-68 or Eentrovirus D68), a fairly rare viral infection that can cause symptoms such as coughing, wheezing and low blood oxygen levels (also known as hypoxemia). In some cases, however, the symptoms can be severe — particularly for children who already suffer from asthma or other respiratory problems.

Jennifer Cornejo of Colorado told Denver's ABC affiliate that her 13-year-old son, William, had cold symptoms that developed overnight into a life-threatening illness. "He was in really bad shape," she told the station. "He came really close to death. He was unconscious at our house and white as a ghost with blue lips — he just passed out."

Here is how William Cornejo described it: "My head started hurting. And after that my lungs started closing up. It felt different."

Until recently, Enterovirus 68 was only thought to cause sporadic infections, but there have been reports of more widespread outbreaks in Georgia, Pennsylvania and Arizona between 2008 and 2010.

Only Missouri and Illinois have confirmed cases of EV-D68, but cases with similar symptoms have been reported in Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio and Oklahoma as well.

4-year-old’s death in September was caused by Enterovirus 68, which is sweeping U.S.

Since August, the virus has hit nearly 600 people, most of them children, across 43 states and District of Columbia, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Four others who died were infected with the disease, but it’s not clear what role it played in their deaths. Eli’s pink eye was unrelated.

Apparently the border Obama should have closed was the one between California and the rest of the country, in 1962:

68: Where Did The Polio-like Enterovirus Come From?

March 3, 2014 by Janelle Vaesa, MPH

Parents in California and around the United States are on high alert over the news of children being paralyzed by a virus. The symptoms range from mild illness to polio-like symptoms.

To date there have been 20 cases, with five of the children paralyzed; no recovery evident. While researchers and medical professionals are trying to figure out the exact cause, many experts believe that an enterovirus could be responsible for this illness.

History and Background of the Eneterovirus 68

A California lab first discovered this strain of enterovirus in 1962 after four children developed a severe respiratory illness. Between 1970 and 2005, there were only 26 reports of enterovirus 68 to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Since the year 2000, officials have placed a closer watch on this virus, and there have been 47 cases.

The enterovirus in general typically peaks during the summer months during July, August, and September, causing cold symptoms. Fever, headache, runny nose, cough, skin rash, and body aches are common symptoms of people who have one of the mild strains of the enterovirus.
Enterovirus 71

In 1969, the same California lab discovered another strain of the enterovirus; enterovirus 71. Enterovirus 71 is more common than enterovirus 68 and according to CNN, health officials are more concerned about enterovirus 71, as it is associated with severe neurological problems.

Neurological problems include aseptic meningitis, paralysis, and encephalitis (swelling in the brain). According to the CDC, there were several outbreaks of paralysis due to enterovirus 71 in Europe during the 1960's and 1970's. Here in the United States, enterovirus wasn’t reported to the National Enterovirus Surveillance System (NESS) until 1983 – between then and 2005, there were 270 reported cases of enterovirus 71.

In a study entitled, “Antigenic Diversity of Enteroviruses Associated with Nonpolio Acute Flaccid Paralysis, India, 2007–2009” researchers discovered that enterovirus 71 was the most prevalent cause among non-polio paralysis, followed by enterovirus 13, and then the coxsackievirus B5. Researchers commented that the challenging part is with a wide range of serotypes that stem from the enterovirus, this makes a “challenging problem” as they try to develop anti-enteroviral strategies.

You know what I don't understand? It takes SO LITTLE to find out basic information. Rappy is pissing his pants about Obama because of something discovered in 1962, rapSF is pissing his pants about supposed Ebola cases that tested out negative nearly a week ago --- really? REALLY?

They have the internet and can't run a basic search to check out if these things are even remotely valid?

It's mind boggling.

I'll just think out loud here.

The first thing that caught my attention is that polio is also an enterovirus. And polio primarily manifests as a flu-type illness. Could they be related? So of course I googled it. Indeed, polioviruses, Coxsackie A viruses (CA), Coxsackie B viruses (CB), and echoviruses are all related and often overlapping in characteristics in a large family called enteroviruses. Rhinoviruses which cause the common cold also belong to this large family.

So, OK, they're related.

The next thing I was curious about is the timeline and global distribution of outbreaks of the enteroviruses. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3542132/ Worldwide emergence of multiple clades of enterovirus 68

This paper was published in 2012 and says "Over the past 3 years, however, outbreaks in Japan, the Philippines and the Netherlands, as well as several clusters in the USA, have implicated EV-D68 as an emerging respiratory pathogen." So their history of global outbreaks goes back to 2009.

But the outbreaks belong to different 'clades' - groups that resemble each other more closely than they resemble other versions of the virus. So these outbreaks aren't due to a single source rapidly spreading through the population, they're due to pockets of particular viral strains that have become simultaneously activated around the globe. "Our analysis indicates that several recently emerged distinct clades are circulating globally."

These variations or clades all relate to the original sample from California in 1962. "Based on the data currently available, the USA appears to have been a source for much of the EV-D68 diversity that we have sampled." Between the early 1960s and the mid 1990s, the original virus underwent significant genetic changes. And then "The virus then underwent a large diversification in the mid-1990s that culminated in a division into clades A and C. Not long after this division, the genomes of clade C-type viruses underwent further rearrangements, resulting in an additional 11 nt deletion in the spacer region." Clade A appears to have split "from clades C-B, sometime between 1997 and 2000. ... Clade B appears to have diverged from clade C around 2007."

In terms of global incidence though, the authors note that surveillance has improved dramatically. Analysis of historical samples as well as improved surveillance in the future will help determine if this is truly a new phenomenon, or merely a newly noticed one. "Although there appears to be a global upsurge of EV-D68-associated respiratory disease, we cannot ignore the possibility that this increase merely reflects improved case ascertainment. In previous studies of respiratory disease, EV-D68 may have been misidentified as a rhinovirus, which would lead to underestimation of its prevalence and importance (CDC, 2011)."

Yeah, I've picked this up as well. Ludicrous.

I wonder what solutions the Anti Obamaites suggest. Close all airports? Build a Korean style wall between US and Mexico.

Speaking of which, saw a great film recently. Monsters. http://www.fireflyfans.net/mreply.aspx?q=y&mid=986049

Didn't get any publicity here at all, but was actually a fairly low budget film, well put together and clever, sparse use of CGI for brilliant effect. Some great shots of a massive wall between USA and Mexico. It didn't keep the monsters out either.

Will you guys blame everything bad on Romney when he wins in 2016?

Hmmm - you know how they can tell where your ancestry is from by doing genetic tests? Well, they did genetic tests of the clades that are causing problems and found they originated in the US in the 1990's. Which is what I posted earlier, in simple, layman's terms. Which you failed to either read or understand. The problematic clades are from the US.

Is THIS post simple enough?

But unlike YOU, I think for myself. You assume that others, like you, wait patiently for orders to come down from high command, and then react.

What makes talk radio so popular isn't that it mimics the Left wing's M.O. of spewing propaganda to the mindless , obedient, dumb masses, but that we think for ourselves. Folks listen to talk radio because it finally says much of what the Right is ALREADY thinking, instead of the homogenized , processed go-se that so often gets shoveled down our throats by the " MSM ".

Worker participation is down too, which makes the phony unemployment # all that more suspect and discouraging.

yes, it's Obama's fault. Own it.

When people claim to have an understanding of how a President moves the stock market up or down, what, exactly, would they ever regard as evidence that their understanding is, you know, wrong?

You've also never shown any kind of causal link between "illegals" and the enterovirus.

Thanks for confirming that.

I guess I'm not the only one who sees the connection.

Is CDC Hiding Enterovirus Link To Illegal Alien Kids?

It is true that EV-D68 has been in the U.S. at least since 1962. But according to a study done by doctors from the Division of Viral Diseases at the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases published on the CDC's own website, EV-D68 "is one of the most rarely reported serotypes, with only 26 reports throughout the 36-year study period (1970 through 2006)."

There's often a disconnect between coincidence and correlation. But we suspect that the jump in cases from 26 in 36 years to nearly 700 in one year coming at the same time as the open-border influx of improperly screened illegal aliens is more than just a coincidence.

So, that's 26 known cases in over the past 3 1/2 decades, to 700 cases in one year.

Nope. No link there, what so ever.

Okay, you got me. I admit it, Obama created the virus to rid the world of all Republicans. He's the mad scientist in all this and should be drawn and quartered for crimes against humanity.

It couldn't be kept secret any longer.................

I just had to tell the truth.

SGG there are so MANY problems with little rappy's notions it's hard to know where to start. For example - they've only started monitoring for the virus in a major way recently - what if it's been around all this time, causing problems that were misattributed to other viruses? Now the way to check for that is go back and test historical samples - and try to work some statistics magic on the data - but that hasn't been done yet. What if there's a high carrier rate in the US? But, like the possibility above, the testing hasn't been done. What if the illegal immigrants have varieties of the virus (clades) different from the ones causing the problems here? Now, that testing HAS been done, but the news sources rappy credits didn't put that in their story. And I have to say, when I KNOW information was gathered but isn't made available it always makes me wonder what they're hiding.

There are so many ways for rappy to be wrong it's amazing he just plows ahead like he doesn't see the problems. Well, I guess he can't.

Actually, this is just a byproduct of Obama's incompetence. Of course, allowing the influx of illegals who came here mostly on his invite, Obama's over all goal is to crash the US welfare system, Cloward and Piven style.

You see, the particular means aren't really all that matters, when its the bigger objective he's after.

Obama’s Border Policy Fueled Epidemic, Evidence Shows

NEIL MUNRO
White House Correspondent

The deadly EV-D68 enterovirus epidemic, which struck thousands of kids this fall, was likely propelled through America by President Barack Obama’s decision to allow tens of thousands of Central Americans across the Texas border, according to a growing body of genetic and statistical evidence.

The evidence includes admissions from top health officials that the epidemic included multiple strains of the virus, and that it appeared simultaneously in multiple independent locations.

The question can be settled if federal researchers study the genetic fingerprint of the EV-D68 viruses that first hit kids in Colorado, Missouri and Illinois to see if they are close relatives to the EV-D68 viruses found in Central America.
