As many of you know, Joss Whedon supports John Kerry for President. I found these sites today and thought I'd give everyone a heads up since I don't see this here anywhere yet and the date is fast arriving! The parties are on October 24th already.

Info: http://www.offworldgraphics.com/Joss4Kerry.html

Official info: http://www.highstakes2004.com/

People hosting these parties will get a real live call from JOSS himself!

Try to go to one or even better, host one. Joss is 100% behind this and participating, so it's a unique opportunity to make HIM HAPPY.......... and we want Joss happy, now, right?

Assuming the right guy wins.

Badnarick isn't a bad guy, but he's redundant.
Kerry himself is a left-leaning libertarian!

http://www.issues2002.org/John_Kerry.htm

Hey, Joss likes Kerry. Have a fund-raising shindig for Kerry.... Invite Badnarick. He must be sort of a lonely guy. He'd probably like a party about now.

Bullsht, that website claims Kerry is a Libertarian-Leaning Liberal. And the site is actually wrong, there's nothing libertarian-leaning about Hanoi John.

Libertarians ideologically are opposed to any government intervention in abortion, Kerry wants the government heavily involved in funding abortions.

True libertarians love capitalism, Kerry has a strong anti-business voting record.

The majority of libertarians see the public school as a failure and realize the best solution is to completely privatize the education system, Kerry has a history of pro-public education votes.

Most libertarians want the government out of our health care, Kerry is all for socialized health care.

Libertarians want Social Security privatized, Kerry has been staunchly oppose to that.

Every genuine libertarian has the highest respect for the Second Amendment of the US Constitution and unconditionally supports the right to bear arms, Kerry is for aggressive gun control.

He supported the Assault Weapons Band and the Brady Bill. He supports suing gun manufacturers for gun violence (showing he doesn't believe in personal responsibility). Overall Kerry has received a completely deserved F rating from the National Rifle Association due to his opposition to Americans' right to personal property.

So, John Kerry is not a libertarian by any stretch of the term.

He's a tax and spend, big government, socialist liberal!

VOTE BADNARIK!

ANYBODY BUT KERRY!

No need for hostilities. I didn't want to discuss politics, it was just a remark because Badnarick was brought up.

- Joss likes John Kerry

- You can talk to Joss if you host a Kerry party on October 24th. If you host a Badnarick party, you won't talk to Joss.

That is all.

Sounds good to me. I'll host a party for Kerry. I just hope Joss talks about Firefly and Serenity, cause I'm a Bush supporter.

I'll be the only one at the party, since none of my friends will want to come, not even the local Browncoats. So really he'll just be calling me.

There's an idea. All you Republican Browncoats out there sign up to host a Kerry party. Get a call from Joss, keep him on the phone as long as you can so he can't call the real parties.

John Kerry sucks. He has no idea of what the American people need and what they need is a president who can lead us to a victory in Iraq. George Bush can easily do that for us. I am only 14 years old and I think Pres. Bush should be put back in the White House for FOUR MORE YEARS.

Will they take post dated checks? How bout pledges?

I live in Ohio so I'm sure I can make up the names of hundreds of fictional Democrats to pledge money and vote for Kerry, I just have to check the local voter registration. If he's willing to take their votes, he should be willing to take what money they offer.

Maybe I can pay in crack, thats Democratic currency here in Ohio.

Nothing like a comment containing the word "crack"!
I wonder why Republicans seem so bitter though, hmph. Maybe because your candidate is a trained monkey?

OK, seriously, Update on the Joss Call-in parties for Kerry:

Joss will be attending the Los Angeles party, please RSVP with the hosts if you can attend. Because of Joss's presence there and other guests:

Amy Acker - (Winifred (Fred) on Angel)
 J. August Richards - (Charles Gunn on Angel)
and Herc of AintItCoolNews will be there. Quite possibly more.

The minimum there will be higher, so the party's admission will be from $50-2000, with all proceeds going to Kerry.

Joss calling remains the same!

Actually, I think Hero is referring to a voter registration fraud case in Ohio. A woman volunteered (or was recruited, not sure which) with the NAACP to register voters and then turned around and sub-contracted. She was paying her sub-contractor with crack cocaine. The dude got about six registrations and then faked a few hundred more (all in his handwriting with addresses that didn't exist and names like Mary Poppins and Michael Jackson). This was discovered after the applications had been submitted and an investigation led to the dude and then his employer.

So ease off the accelerator, Ghoulman.

I have one last reminder for tomorrow and a large, sunny ray of hope for all procrastinators~~

DON'T FORGET the High Stakes parties tomorrow!! The Joss phone call is at 2:00 pm PT/5:00 pm ET

All you procrastinators still have time to find a High Stakes party:

www.highstakes2004.com

IF YOU CAN'T attend a party, there is still hope for you. You can go to www.johnkerry.com/buffy and donate. Then you can dial in from home and hear Joss anyway. Wow, what Joss will do for his fans!

You have to do it really soon though, like now if possible! As soon as possible, that is. Very early tomorrow morning would work too. After that, the organizers will be headed off to the parties and then you're out of luck.

So don't miss out! This is your last chance to hear Joss answer bothersome fan questions, talk about X3, Serenity, Kerry and whatever else he's got on his mind.

I just believe that Stars should not do this. I am a supporter of the president (not 14) and a huge Josh fan. Knowing that the liberal leaning Hollywood is doing what they can to subvert an election is really cause for concern. Who do the libertarians and republicans have for this type of "advertisement".

What is it that these actors and writers feel that their opinions in politics matter? I personally just wish the whole of Hollywood would shut up and start concentrating on making good movies again. They have not been doing this well for years!

As for the election, be careful who you vote for. I have a feeling people are voting for Kerry just BECAUSE they want a change, not because they believe him to be a good presidential candidate.

As for Josh doing this, it is greatly disappointing to me. Do these Hollywood types understand on how this makes their fans feel about them? Why in the world would I change my opinion because of someone who writes fiction?

I don't get it. Probably never will.

Joss’ phone call was only a half hour long, which is disappointing
I’m only writing up the non-political parts…I’m sure that the complete transcript will be available online soon
But I don’t take notes that fast anyway.

Joss arrived and thanked us for having him in our homes but he wished we had put a little more effort into the decorations, but really…it is just fine…
He introduced Alyson Hannigan & Amy Acker, who were the only ones courageous enough to get into the booth with him.

Alyson volunteered the information that altho Emma Cawfield is a Republican she is voting for Kerry (this was in response to a question about how you talk to/convince people like Adam Baldwin)

Someone pointed out that ED’s TV show Tru Calling has been cancelled and would Faith be in a Buffyverse movie…
Joss replied that he loves Faith and Eliza, and they both deserve a wonderful vehicle to explore the character further, but no body can say when anything like that will happen (evidently there are no Buffyverse movies in the offing, altho he didn’t say that directly).

Someone asked about writing a mythic character and Joss said it helps to hire brilliant actors, and he introduced Nick Brendon & Alexis Denisoff who had worked up their courage to come into the booth. Nick said ‘hi’ and Alexis said he would be happy to take any questions so long as Joss answers them.
Joss went on to say that you have to write
1. Bigger than life
2. A story people can relate to
And then the two work together to make a mythic story, you can’t leave out either element.

Someone asked what we as fans can do to encourage Joss to keep writing and he said: Elect John Kerry, because otherwise he will spiral into a depression and stop writing.
(sorry I know you don’t necessarily want to hear the political stuff, but he was taking a political spin on everything,
And they chose the questions for political content I think).

Joss said that he is currently writing a new screen play, something that is not based on anyone else’s work or on anything he wrote in the past.

He was asked again about the Ats cliffhanger and he repeated that the message was that you have to keep fighting…
But he went ahead and said (I think he was being flippant):
Gunn dies (groans in the background…I think J August Richards was there)
Allyria survives
Spike Shanshues
Angel loses an arm Xander loses his other eye with is odd because he wasn’t even there.

Question about who Spike would vote for. Joss said, ‘Spike, he is so hot!’
Joss went on to say he always secretly thought that Spike was a tad more evolved than Angel. But Spike loves a fight, and might want to be ornery…and has a wicked sense of humor. So maybe Spike would vote for Nader.

Introduced Nathan Fillon who got lost & turned around and ended up in Santa Monica, which is a comment on his GPS system.

Joss also said he would NOT be directing Xmen3, he wasn’t going to be writing or directing it…he thought long and hard about it but Fox didn’t ask him and if he showed up to start directing it would be a faux pas…

So it was only a half hour, and went by way too quickly…:(

But it was fun!
And there was a lot more…be sure to read the transcripts when they come out if you want to hear Joss’ political rants.

Why shouldn't stars do this? Is it any worse than corporation donations or directives given to employees to donate to campaigns (and yes, this is done epecially at investment houses to get around campaign finance reform)? Or how 'bout all the special interest ads w/ questionable "facts"?

Face it, in the current state of politics, the candidate's stance doesn't really matter. Just the sound bite. This year it seems like the only people talking about the issues (besides in the debates) are the stars on the bully pulpit. And in lieu of a media that actually does investigative reporting rather than spewing talking points, it's better than nothing.

I understand all to well. All I said was that in Ohio the Democrats were using crack for currency.

I note you responded by calling me a racist and using a derogatory racist term "cracker". Thats just another word for nig##r in my book. Maybe you should throw around WOP or Wetback or Chink, since you can't be sure what I really am.

You suggest the fault here lies with the Bush Campaign and the white supremicists. I don't see either handing out crack for votes in Ohio. That distiction lies with the National Organization for the Advancement of Colored People.

I acknowledge the problems the Right wing needs to address in regards to race relations. But at least the racists on the right are ostracized. The left embraces racism as a means to keep power. Much of their power comes from the continued suppression of African Americans, so they not only discourage progress, they take advantage of the circumstances they help to foster and then claim the high ground on Sunday mornings and election days. Its a disgusting diservice to those they are claiming to represent.

So yes, you are wrong. More wrong then you are willing to admit.

Hero, it's NAACP, not NOACP, and there is no evidence that using crack to pay for registration was known/ordered/condoned by that group. It's like blaming a corporation for the actions taken by a temp in hiring another person to do their work for them. So I think you stretched the truth on that one. I was also off on my numbers: he submitted more than a hundred, not the hundreds that I stated. The policies in place to catch this type of voter fraud worked (although it is problematic that they were every turned in in the first place - someone fell down on the job there).

I don't envy those who are living in contested states. I get lots of political junk mail and daily recorded phone messages and my state has been out of play for the entire campaign. I can't imagine what it must be like to live where both campaigns are investing tremendous resources. Things look nasty in Ohio.

For example, a very small scale printing error led to one candidate being left off absentee ballots (only two ballots that actually reached voters but, as the article states, this just feeds paranoia):

There are complaints concerning absentee ballots mailed out in Cuyahoga County and a potential for people to vote for a different candidate then they attended (once again, this looks like a case of people not reading instructions and getting confused):

A break in occurred at the Lucas County campaign headquarters and computers were stolen that contained campaign related information (it sounds like one of the people at the headquarters unintentionally disabled the motion alarm through stupidity so the break in was not immediately detected):

Voters in Franklin County got phone calls claiming to be from the local board of elections (a lie) telling them that the polling sites had been changed:
http://www.nbc4i.com/politics/3843020/detail.html
Alert people called the board to verify and this is how the story broke.

Both of the campaigns are trying to get thousands of recruits stationed inside polling places to question people's eligibility to vote (this would be in addition to the volunteers who are there to do this job anyway. This would not be legal in my state - we have a 100 foot no-harassment zone around polling places):

People who resigned from a South Dakota campaign after voting fraud allegations (ongoing investigation - some indictments) have joined the Ohio campaign:

(Sorry, that link required registration ).

So good luck, Hero. And all those others living in swing states. The final days of nastiness are here.

* big thanks to the dKosopedia on voting fraud allegations broken down by state found at dailyKos.

EMBERS

SoupCatcher: thanks for articles...
in my own home town we had a closely contested Mayoral race where the standing Mayor counted several hundred highly questionable nursing home ballots that were filled out by the staff on behalf of the patients...
and many opponets to the Mayor were forced to drive home to get their passports to 'prove' they were really citizens even tho they were on the registered voters list and had voted before!

But I'm surprised that no one on this thread seems to care at all about Joss...
I understood that there were a lot of house parties for the High Stakes fundraiser held by Browncoats and I was hoping to hear some reports of experiences...

Sorry for the thread hijacking, Embers. I decided to jump in on a comment Ghoulman made that I felt was unfortunate and then it spiraled out of control from there (I probably should've just started another thread on voting irregularities).

I really enjoyed your description of what happened at the High Stakes event you attended and I look forward to what others have to post.

I was at the LA party - it was amazing! There were only about 200 people there, and a dozen or so Whedonverse actors, so I got to talk to each one for a few minutes!

My girlfriend and I talked to Nathan the most, and he was incredibly nice and funny. We had someone take our picture with him, and then he took the camera to see the picture. He didn't like it, so he held the camera out in front of the three of us and retook it himself!

Can anyone please tell me how to post pictures here, so I can share it?

Go to the blue sun room and under the list of the little screencap on the upper left choose 'Add Image'.
