Has anybody been assaulted with this "new Math" which apparently has been foisted upon the masses by Common Core?

I had heard of it, from math-savvy parents and college graduates, and it was described as "bounces" along numbers, and it is a way to prevent children from ever learning how to do math. All the parents and helpers could not understand what the teachers were trying for.

To see example, go to google (I hate saying that) and search "common core math" and look for the images with the bouncing line.

Any comments?

I think the concept is they are using "number line" math. Lots of artsy loops and arcs instead of math.

The explanation of that link makes some sense. That is the first I have heard of the standard math methods that we have all learned being ALSO taught and mastered. I had been given the impression that the numberline was the sole method.
In fact, now that I am typing this, I recall numerous parents mentioning that when confronted with this homework, they surreptitiously taught their children how to do math the standard way, and the kids had never seen such a thing, did not recognize it, and proclaimed that the standard way was so much easier and why did the teacher not show them that way - belying the fact that that link seems to be a lie - the Common Core is in fact not teaching the kids the standard way.

This link breaks down simply multiplication into Algebra.
Algebra is the subject that parents in the 70's and 80's called "new math" and whined about.
Now apparently these genius teachers have decided to teach Algebra to children who have not yet mastered the basics of add, subtract, multiply, divide.
I myself did develop Algebra as a way to multiply when I was in second grade. Every teacher failed me on it because I never wrote down the "work" in between problem and answer, and just because I had every answer correct all the time, even when nobody else in the class did, was not good enough. Every teacher in every grade told me that "my way" of math would not work (even though it did every time) until my 8th grade Math teacher saw me doing it, asked me about it, and then told me that I would learn the next year that it does work (I already knew that- it had for 6 years), and that it was called Algebra. Yes, the next year in 9th grade our schools did teach Algebra.

Nowadays this method of writing down the answers (albeit in reverse digital order - writing the rightmost digit first and progressing leftward) without any of the work would be considered "cheating" because it would be assumed the student was using a calculator, or looking the answer up via google, or "got the answers from somebody else" or something similar. But at the time none of my teachers could figure this out because I was the first person in class to have the answer, and they could watch me work it out (as opposed to quickly writing it down as if I had it memorized), and so I would be the one every other kid would be copying from. Cheating has become an art form, and an education form for those who eventually became teachers.

I might not be dismayed that each child is being EXPOSED to this form of multiplication, but I wonder about the wisdom of proclaiming that each child must be able to master Algebra by 3rd grade, while at the same time preventing the child from having any basic understanding of adding, subtracting, standard multiplication or division. I think that requiring 3rd graders to master Algebra should be reserved for the students who have learned the basics beforehand - which is done on other countries without a Department of Education.

I am wondering if this numberline method is merely a way of stopping cheating. The numberline and bumps on top require that the student is able to do the drawing themselves, not merely copy an answer they got from somebody or somewhere else.

I know that there was a phase where teachers would not allow a student to pass a test WITHOUT using a calculator - even if the answer was wrong, as long as the answer was what the calculator displayed, the test was graded as being correct.
Now, if this numberline method is in fact being used to prevent cheating, to show that the "math" is being done without the use of a calculator, then this would be a reversal of the stupid previous goals.

This is only a possible reason I'm thinking of. Does anybody know if this is really the case?

Yeah, I ranted against Common Core Crap a while ago. Put simply, with each new subheading they are attempting to teach the kids that there is several different ways to "solve for x" and to visualize the problems.

Unfortunately, all it does for half of the kids is confuse them when you confront them with ANY problem they no longer KNOW the simplest way to reach an answer. They half-know FOUR different ways of doing a problem. (And most people only learned the simple way, so they no longer can assist their children with homework)

Unless your kid is really good at numbers, most children lack the kind of strategic memory to USE the new techniques.

These books were written by math majors, and unfortunately they neglected to ask the education majors ANYTHING about how children actually function.

The history books are also horrifically designed. Well, unless you have ADD.
There is no such thing as a full page of information. Each paragraph is interrupted by pictures, notations, quizzes, and fun facts, that only manage to prevent a kid from actually focusing on the subject at hand.

Whenever I tried to help my kid FIND an answer, you couldn't just look in the section, you had to review THE ENTIRE LESSON, making sure homework was a nightmare...

They seriously need to invest in systems that sort the kids into what type of learner they are. I am an auditory learner. My husband is a hands-on learner. My mother is a visual learner. That is the only way we are ever going to be effective at teaching a child. But, EXPENSIVE.
