Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

I read that in Baltimore the police have an unofficial way of beating people up with what they call a 'rough ride'. You handcuff a person and put them unsecured in a van, then you drive fast with a lot of hard turns, hard stops, and uneven roads. Baltimore pd has already paid out a million+ settlement to a man who was taken for a 'rough ride' and ended up permanently paralyzed due to a spinal injury.

SAGAN: We are releasing vast quantities of carbon dioxide, increasing the greenhouse effect. It may not take much to destabilize the Earth's climate, to convert this heaven, our only home in the cosmos, into a kind of hell.

Good thing the black citizenry there keeps voting for the corrupt racist criminal Democrats to keep all of their population under the government thumb, and then they keep voting for the corrupt racist criminal Democrats, and after that they keep voting for the corrupt racist criminal Democrats. Maybe if the voters keep making the same mistakes, a different outcome will prevail.

This case was investigated by 30 detectives, even if they didn't want to harm this man they did, now he's dead. If the case wasn't recorded not only would it NOT have made national news, it wouldn't have made local news. Now not only is "Big Brother" watching US, we're watching HIM. These days EVERYBODY has a video camara in their cell phones, watch out for US "Big Brother", we're keeping our eyes (and cell phones) on you.

I worked in Baltimore for a while in the early 80's. It was a great place with lots of great people, great restaurants, great activities, etc. The Inner Harbor had just opened up and the Orioles won the World Series. There was a lot of optimism for the future of the city. Damn shame to see what's going on there now.

Welcome back , old friend.

I said from the start of this there's no good end for the cops on this one. Even w/ out intent, they were still criminally negligent. Had you been paying attention, instead of projecting false positions onto me for which aren't mine, you'd know that.

Freddie Gray died in their charge. There's no getting around that. Problem I have is that if she's ( the prosecutor ) going to show intent somehow, then good luck. I just hope she's got the evidence.

Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz and several other legal hoi polloi are saying the charges against the cops won't stick... that the D.A. has no case to make for murder or manslaughter. Perhaps that's why the vile idiot racist Mayor today asked the race-hunters at the D.O.J. to come in for a look-see at her own police force.

Oh, there's a case baby! There better be a fucking case .. 'cause last week's burning, looting, and general mayhem will look like afternoon tea and crumpets if there ain't.

It took balls for the prosecutor to bring charges, and this from a woman, go figure!

All kidding aside, that took a tremendous amount of courage. To bring charges against these cops and face ridicule and disdain from those that do not agree with the move.
Criticism abounds, and yet she proceeds undeterred. I say Bravo! How else are you going to stop the madness. Even if, after trial, they walk away scott free the pendulum has swung the other way. She's unclogged the logjam. Momentum has shifted, and maybe now things will change. Cops will have to have a reason, other than "well, he was black" to arrest and to shoot. The facts will now come out, but also perhaps a new procedure will come about - how about letting the evidence show the way.

The shoot first ask questions later syndrome has been put on hold. I say, it is dangerous for the "real" cops to do their job properly, because of a few bad apples.
In that moment's hesitation, you could lose a valuable life.

A little less than half of Justice prevailed today in Baltimore when the scapegoated cops were removed from threat of railroading.

The full scope of Justice will be upheld when Michael Schatzow and Marilyn Mosby are found Guilty of Maliscious Prosecution, imprisoned, and ordered restitution to all of the scapegoated officers that they attempted to railroad.

Sheriffs are elected. Chiefs of Police are appointed.

http://americancopmagazine.com/elected-vs-appointed/
The biggest difference between a chief and a sheriff is how they got their title. Chiefs are appointed by a government entity such as the mayor, city manager, etc. Sheriffs on the other hand are elected — appointed by the voters of their counties.

Chiefs face political pressure depending on whatever political pressure in faced by the appointer. And of course pressure is pro-rated, with high dollar contributors first, business second, the wealthy enclaves (as distinct from donors) third, and so on down the line.

Let me just point out that the author left out vital relevant facts in the opinion piece. Doing that is known as cherry-picking. And whether you do that in the news, in discussion, in debate or in opinion, when you distort the facts, you've changed the nature of your communication into propaganda. But WE don't have any of THAT in the US, do we?!

Gee whiz. I trick you into actually looking for some facts, hoping you will accidentally swerve into reality and truth, yet you seem impervious.

The difference between Sheriff and Police Chief is the defined jurisdiction or constituency. Sheriffs are responsible for Counties (or perhaps Parrishes, Commonwealths, whatever). Sheriffs are not normally multi-County, they just have one County to work. Police are usually defined by the Town, Township, Village, City, or other Municipality which created the organization within their Charter documents. Police do not have jurisdiction over Sheriffs outside of the Police Municipality.

Sheriffs are normally elected, but IIRC not always.
Police Chiefs can be elected, and in some places are. Even a quick search of the interwebs results in the facts coming to surface, despite your aversion and evasion.

From the very first paragraph of this link:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chief_of_police
A Chief of Police, also known as Police Chief or sometimes shortened to just Chief, is the title typically given to the top official in the chain of command of a police department, particularly in North America.
In contrast to a Sheriff (who is generally elected by the voters of a county, except in the states of Rhode Island and Hawaii[1]), a Chief of Police is usually a municipal employee who owes his allegiance to a city or town. Some states have both an appointed and an elected Chief of Police (Louisiana).
In Louisiana, a Chief of Police may serve as the Chief of Police, Marshal, and Constable for a city.

Santa Clara, CA also elects their Police Chief.
King County, WA had an appointed Sheriff from the 70's until the 90's.
