The folks on the Left who love to cry wolf and exaggerate ( and fabricate ) in order to promote their hatred for Bush should be ashamed of themselves. That is, if they even had any shame....

In a catastrophe many times over what Katrina caused Louisiana, we see the effects of an ACTUAL useless dictatorship, a military junta which goes so far beyond bureaucratic incompetence , it numbs the mind.

Myanmar junta still blocking most cyclone aid

YANGON, Myanmar: A trickle of aid shipments arrived in Myanmar on Sunday, more than a week after a massive cyclone smashed the country, but officials continued to bar major shipments to the storm's hard-hit survivors.

The junta is refusing to grant entry to foreign aid workers, who relief officials say are crucial to preventing more deaths from disease among an estimated 1.5 million victims of the May 3 storm.

In another blow to aid efforts, a ship carrying aid sank on the way from Yangon, the financial capital, to the Irrawaddy Delta, which bore the brunt of the storm.

The United Nations World Food Program said that only one visa had been approved out of 16 it had requested. The aid group World Vision said it had requested 20 visas and received two.

At Yangon's port, shipments of rice were being loaded onto two freighters bound for Malaysia and Singapore, apparently as part of an existing contract. Another ship was being loaded with rice bound for the delta.
Reuters reported Sunday that state-run Myanmar TV had said that 28,458 people had died in the cyclone and that 33,416 were missing.

Reuters also reported that the UN humanitarian agency had said in a new assessment that 1.2 million to 1.9 million people were struggling to survive in the aftermath of the storm. "The number of deaths could range from 63,290 to 101,682, and 220,000 people are reported to be missing," the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said.

Some water and electricity had been restored by Sunday in Yangon, but prices for rice and fuel had increased sharply, along with prices for candles while the power was out.

As aid shipments continued Sunday, a spokesman for the World Food Program, Paul Risley, said that they amounted to about one-tenth of what was needed and that the country also needed to start a major logistical operation to help victims of the storm.

The World Food Program said that the authorities had released 38 tons of high-energy biscuits it had confiscated Friday and that 4.4 tons of biscuits had been delivered Sunday. The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said three of its aircraft had delivered 14 tons of shelter materials.

But the group said Sunday that a ship carrying aid for up to 1,000 people sank on the way from Yangon to the delta after apparently hitting a submerged tree trunk and taking on water, The Associated Press reported. Aung Kyaw Htut, who leads the Myanmar Red Cross distribution team, called the accident "a great loss for the Myanmar Red Cross and for the people who need aid so urgently." People near the village of Myinka Gone and aid workers managed to save some of the goods and started to carry them to the nearest town for onward shipment, the Red Cross said.

The United States was preparing to send in its first aircraft with relief supplies on Monday. Reuters reported that France was to deliver 1,500 tons of rice aboard the warship Mistral, which would arrive in the middle of this week.

The European Union urged the junta to allow more relief workers into the country, The AP reported. The EU development commissioner, Louis Michel, said Sunday that he welcomed signs of improving access for relief agencies that want to help the victims, but he warned that a massive international operation was still needed to save lives.

The focus of the military junta, meanwhile, was on its referendum for a constitution that was intended to perpetuate its rule. Many residents said the vote followed a campaign of coercion and propaganda.

The military appeared to have diverted some resources from helping cyclone victims to overseeing the voting, which was held in all but the hardest hit areas. A resident of Yangon said by telephone that refugees who had sought shelter in schoolhouses had been evicted so the sites could be used as polling places.

In Datgyigone, 55 kilometers, or 35 miles, north of Yangon, a precinct captain laughed when asked if he thought most people would vote for the constitution. "Everyone will vote yes," he said. "Of course yes. Hundred percent."

He said that most voters had no idea what they were voting for and that neither he nor most people he knew had actually read the proposed constitution. "The government says vote, so we vote," he said with a shrug. He spoke openly, but, fearing retribution, asked that his name not be used.

Most villagers, when asked about their votes, said nothing. A man selling batteries, combs and flip-flops from a pushcart hurried off when he was asked about the referendum. "I cannot speak about this," he said over his shoulder. "I'm afraid."

Should be clear as day what I'm saying. Those who cried wolf and exaggerated the trials and tribulations as it pertains to the job description of President have no fucking clue what they're talking about. It has nothing to do w/ ' seeing no evil. ' blah blah blah, but everything to do w/ being honest and having a damn CLUE about the proper function of the Fed Gov't in times of crisis. In Myanmar, we have thugs literally delaying shipments of supplies, because they don't want the "citizens" , aka - slaves to the state , to hold any level of thanks, praise or admiration to anyone but those who run Myanmar.

So that's the fuck what, brother.

Don't expect logic, remember what you're talking to .

It's comparing a relatively poor country to the richest country in the world. It's full blown loony toons. "We didn't fuck it up as bad as a poor military dictatorship, that makes us great!"

Or it makes AU a chump, whatever...

Starting a thread to mentally fellate Bush, a thread that doesn't add anything but bigotry, a thread that doesn't deserve anything of any significance in it, only making replies that attack people who don't do the same, at least YOU'RE consistent. A consistently evil racist piece of shit without any mind whatsoever. They can't take that away from you, even if 'they' wanted too.

FREMDFIRMA

Given our conduct both aboveboard and behind the scenes for the last fifty years, them not trusting us or our allies is completely justified.

It's a damn fool thing to do, in my opinion, but I sure as hell understand why.

Do you REALLY think we're above misusing aid attempts to install intelligence assets and forment a revolt that would install a US-friendly puppet dictator ?

You know, like we did in Haiti repeatedly, and the last one wasn't very long ago, even if the media won't touch that with a ten foot pole, and look at the condition of that country now.

Think those folks are thankful we deposed, more or less kidnapped, the guy who finally had their country getting it's shit together and replaced him with another one of Papa Docs cronies ?

Do you think, in the midst of chaos, violence, and starvation, caused by our meddling, and the asswipe we propped up this time around, that they're very happy with us right now ?

Our aid tends to come with the unspoken "price" of sabotage, betrayal and attempts to destabilise your government and make it ripe for one of our proxy puppets to take over, we've done it so many times that everyone on the planet knows this - and the folks running things over there are WELL aware of that, not to mention some nasty SOBs in their own right.

They don't trust us, and they got every conceivable reason not to, is what it is.

Which is fine and dandy, let their own people get pissed off enough about their incompetence and opppression and do something about it for once.

And as Cit is so fond of pointing out...
"Better than a tinpot dictatorship..."
Ain't much of a yardstick to be measuring our own country by, especially when we can do so much better by removing the dolts running things HERE who've damn near reduced us to one.

It cannot be said enough, those who do not learn from history, are doomed to endlessly repeat it

Where's the bigotry, pin head? It's bigotry to point out , as reported by EVERY GORRAM news outlet, that the Myanman ( Burmese ) Government isn't allowing aid to get to its people? Just how in the FUCK is that 'bigotry' ???

Please, explain.

To answer your question Frem.... Yes. I do think it's absurd to claim we'd 'misuse' aid attempts to install intelligence personnel. We're sending a C-130 full of aid. Hard to believe anyone would confuse a C-130 for a secret agent.

That there's a bigoted statement.

Need me to tell you why? Of course you do! I mean, you needed it pointed out in the first place...

You're prescribing the same thoughts and feelings to an entire group of people, calling them all liars, and saying they're shameless (immoral too, perhaps?). That is bigoted.

You've set up a strawman at the start of the thread, framing it to allow you to make sweeping generalisations pushing your pro-Bush agenda, and setting the stage to attack anyone who doesn't agree with you, that the problems of Myanmar prove Bush is a saint.

There's nothing bigoted about that statement , what so ever. Try consulting a dictionary and read up on the word 'bigot'.

Quote:

“George Bush doesn't care about black people, ... They're saying black families are looting and white families are just looking for food...they're giving the (Army) permission to shoot us”
- Kanye West

First of all, he doesn't back up that statement. Then he goes on to talk about what THE MEDIA is reporting, and attributes that somehow to George Bush ??? At no time was the Army told to 'shoot' THEM, but they sure was hell should have.

bigot [ˈbigət] noun
a person who constantly and stubbornly holds a particular point of view etc
Example: a religious bigot

Seems to apply. Maybe you should try again .

Generally speaking, because it's a waste of time. Your sole response to me is " liar' , so what's the point ? I don't 'stubbornly' cling to anything here, because it can't be 'stubborn' if it's true, now can it ? I make the claim that folks irrationally accuse Bush for the catastrophe of Katrina, and I could give you example after example, and you'd still accuse me of being a bigot. Hell, Spike Lee made a damn movie in which he promotes the idea that the " racist " US Government blew up the levees. And you call ME stubborn? I ask you, wha'ts the damn point in even trying to discuss the matter w/ you when there's no matter at all ? It's a true, valid and honest claim on my part that folks on the left WHINE about New Orleans somehow being Bush's fault, BECAUSE THEY DO! You not liking that fact does not make me a bigot. Again, nice attempt, but try again.

Unless its true. If its true then he his merely stating a fact and simple facts can't be bigoted.

If that is the case then the debate is about the state and if it is or is not true. I note for the record that the existence of exceptions does not necessarily invalidate the rule (and the opposite is true for Auraptor...the existence of an exception does not make for a new rule).

His basic point is that Burma shows us how bad it can be...his point is correct. The failings in Burma, however, have little to do with the failings after Katrina. I would suggest that Burma and Katrina have a lot in common in that they involve disasters on a scale unprecedented.

Katrina involved the complete destruction of an American City on a scale not seen since the a hurricane a hundred years prior in Texas (which killed 9,000 folks). Despite the destruction the loss of life was low creating a massive humanitarian problem. This combined with widespread destruction of infrastructure outside of the City with devestation spanning several states, slow Federal response, and the complete breakdown of City planning prior to the event and State response after the event...all add up to problems. Perhaps the biggest broken link is the inability of the President to act without the governor's consent. Despite these challenges relief poured into the region. Within a week we had a handle on the situation in most areas and the immediate threat of large scale loss of life was over. Within two weeks the crisis was past and the issue became one of reconstruction. In that sense it became a matter of party. Where Republicans had control...things got rebuilt. Democrats had more problems...and this was with comperable money, Republicans simply did more statistically with less (not much less, but less all the same).

Burma is faced with all of those problems plus the complete inability of the international community to act without the support or permission of the military junta. After the Tsunami the US deployed 16,000 troops and 24 ships to the internation effort and with the complete cooperation of local governments. Burma is also faced with a large scale lack of infrastructure (not merely damaged...but never really existed). The events in Burma are still in flux. Many, especially liberals, advocate invasion. I agree noting Burma's large oil and rubber resources that have been less and less available since the end of WW2 (and the strategic location near China...perfect for bomber and naval bases).

Clearly the two events are similar but not really comperable in a specific sense.
