Quote:

CHICAGO (AP) - Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested Tuesday on charges he brazenly conspired to sell or trade President-elect Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat to the highest bidder as part of what federal prosecutors called a "political corruption crime spree."

Prosecutors did not accuse Obama himself of any wrongdoing.

Blagojevich also was charged with illegally threatening to withhold state assistance to Tribune Co., the owner of the Chicago Tribune, in an attempt to strong-arm the newspaper into firing editorial writers who had criticized him.

The 51-year-old Democrat was also accused of engaging in pay-to-play politics _ that is, doling out jobs, contracts and appointments in return for campaign contributions.

Having a hard time keeping track of all 10,000 GOP scandals? Between fired U.S. attorneys, deleted RNC e-mails, sexually harassed pages, outed CIA agents, and tortured Iraqi prisoners—not to mention the warrantless wiretapping, plum defense contracts, and golf junkets to Scotland—you could be forgiven for losing track of which congressman or Bush administration flunky did which shady thing. Renzi—now, was that the guy with the skeezy land deal? Or the woman Paul Wolfowitz promoted?

We're not saying that Democrats never do anything shady. (Cash-stuffed freezers come to mind.) But as the saying goes, with great power come great opportunities to screw up royally. And if your memory is as hazy as ours, you could probably use a handy refresher

I live in Indiana. Next door to us is the most corrupt state in the union. The stories that come out of Chicago on a regular basis are always sorid. This event comes as no shock at all.

One of the things he was holding out for was to use his apointment power to somehow leverage himself into Obama's cabinet. The FBI taped an entire conversation where he was debating how he would use the apointment to his greatest advantage. Would he appoint himself? Would he sell it to a highest bidder inside the Illinois Democratic Party? Would he work connections to get his wife extra real-estate commissions by apointing a person who could see to it that she "sold" several houses in North Chicago? Finally, would he use connections to leverage himself into Obama's cabinet. The list goes on from there.

The very fact that a potnetial for a cabinet seat existed implies Obama's culpability in some form or fashon...but it won't stick. As far as this issue goes, O is made of Teflon...this will all get pinned solely to Blagojevich.

Common logic points to O as at least being aware of the favor he could dole out. That's the way Chicago works, you see. I have no doubt that a conversation twixt the president-elect and the Illinois gov occured at some point, but the FBI has no tape of it, so O will be able to avoid this one entirely.

No, cause no pain. Politicians are a dirty bunch (See: Clinton, Bush, etc.), and it follows that any good one is gonna have to associate with many bad ones in his or her career.
EDIT: And even good ones will have at least a little smelly laundry in the hamper...

As AU might say, you have no case.

Rezko - convicted, but Obama cleared completely, months ago. Give it up already.

As for this new teapot tempest - assuming for the sake of argument that it WAS Emanuel on the other side of the argument with Blagojevich (and that is quite a large assumption) - Emanuel must have been arguing AGAINST the sale of the Senate seat. Wouldn't that make him - and Obama - the good guys ?

What do you have against that ?

And it gets even better than that - for Obama, anyway. According to the Chicago Sun Times, one of the tapes actually has The Guv talking about Obama wanting the seat to go to one of "his" people, with nothing but his thanks and appreciation in return. The Guv's take on that request? "F*&k 'em."

So by all appearances, he wasn't about to give the seat away to one of Obama's key people without getting something more for it than the thanks of a greatful President.

May he rot in prison for his sins.

The question arises, though - who gets to appoint Obama's successor now? And HOW will that seat be filled? Obviously the governor can't be trusted to make a decent pick, and you don't want Obama picking his successor (sets a bad precedent), so how do you do it? Special election? Referendum? How?

Even if he didn't play ball, if he DID know it was going on, and kept quiet, that's still a problem. But just goes to show how crooked Chicago politics is ( Rezko ) and that Obama was knee deep in it, from the get go.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Jurors in I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby's perjury trial were certain of the former vice presidential aide's guilt, but they also harbored sympathy for him as a "fall guy," one of them said Tuesday after the verdict.

Denis Collins, a Washington resident and self-described registered Democrat, said he and fellow jurors found that passing judgment on Libby was "unpleasant."

But in the final analysis, he said jurors found Libby's story just too hard to believe. (Watch juror explain their verdict )

"It was just very hard to believe how he could remember it on a Tuesday and forget it on a Thursday and then remember it two days later," Collins told reporters outside U.S. District Court. "Having said that, I will say that there was a tremendous amount of sympathy for Mr. Libby on the jury." (Your e-mails: "Libby is the fall guy")

"It was said a number of times, 'What are we doing with this guy here? Where's [Karl] Rove ... where are these other guys?'

"We're not saying we didn't think Mr. Libby was guilty of the things we found him guilty of, but it seemed like ... he was the fall guy." (Watch how Libby could stave off jail time )

Collins said the jury believed Libby was "tasked by the vice president to go and talk to reporters."

WASHINGTON - Top White House officials tried to blame vice presidential aide "Scooter" Libby for the 2003 leak of a CIA operative's identity to protect President Bush's political strategist, Karl Rove, Libby's defense attorney said Tuesday as his perjury trial began and the first witness took the stand.

To no one's surprise, you're completely bass-ackwards. Libby was CONVICTED - whch means the jury had to be unanimous.

The 'one was enough' whine works only when someone's found NOT guilty. Try again, ZIT.

I'd like to try again, but I'm not. Richard Armatage leaked Plames name, Libby got convicted of lying to the FEDS not of leaking. Timmys friend should have been removed from the jury, he was not. So instead of trying again, I'm going to have a soda and watch TV. G'night

"Libby got convicted of lying to the FEDS not of leaking."

Oh, so you agree he DID get convicted and the post about Russert's neighbor/ friend was pointless !

Hey, it takes a 2 x 4, but at least you're capable of learning.

Look at the bright side. At least it's not another Texan.

As a Texan, I s'pose I *should* be offended at that comment. But it's hard to argue with the truth... Texas does indeed have some of the slimiest scumbag politicians in existence!

Now you're starting to hate on him?
Good. Then he IS my man, after all.

Just coalescing the data, as they say.

Reminds me of Gary Hart, pleading his innocence, in much the same manner, before getting caught on the boat, Monkey Business, with Donna Rice. Too gorram funny.

What does being born elsewhere have to do with your association with political corruption ? If true, according to you, that would make Obama whiter than the driven snow. Seeing as he was born in Hawaii, or Kenya, or Indonesia - or -anywhere but Chicago.

BTW - have you figured out what your big ass assumption was ?

So, let's see - what has the right wing echo chamber - aka MSM - done to torpedo Obama before he even takes office ?

Anyone want to help me make a list ?

Paranoid much?

Hey, he might be doing it to himself. No Karl Rove, Scooter Libby hands prints needed for this!

And BTW, the MSM has little or nothing to do w/the GOP. Everyone knows that the MSM is nothing more than an extension of the DNC.
