HOW CAN I MANAGE COMPULSIVE SHOPPING and SPENDING ADDICTION
(SHOPOHOLISM)

What is compulsive shopping and spending?
People who "shop 'till they drop" and run their credit cards up to the limit often have a shopping addiction. They believe that if they shop they will feel better. Compulsive shopping and spending generally makes a person feel worse. It is similar to other addictive behaviors and has some of the same characteristics as as problem drinking (alcoholism), gambling and overeating addictions.

Compulsive shopping or spending can be a seasonal balm for the depression, anxiety and loneliness during the December holiday season. It also can occur when a person feels depressed, lonely and angry. Shopping and spending will not assure more love, bolster self-esteem, or heal the hurts, regrets, stress, and the problems of daily living. It generally makes these feelings worse because of the increased financial debt the person has obtained from compulsive shopping.

How can you tell if you are a compulsive shopper?
Shopoholics, when they are feeling "out of sorts, shop for a " pick-me-up." They go out and buy, to get a high, or get a "rush" just like a drug or alcohol addict. Shopping addiction tends to affect more women than men. They often buy things they do not need. Holiday seasons can trigger shopping binges among those who are not compulsive the rest of the year. Many shopping addicts go on binges all year long and may be compulisve about buying certain items, such as shoes, kitchen items or clothing; some will buy anything.

Women with this compulsive disorder often have racks of clothes and possessions with the price tags still attached which have never been used. They will go to a shopping mall with the intention of buying one or two items and come home with bags and bags of purchases. In some cases shopololics have an emotional "black out" and do not remember even buying the articles. If their family or friends begin to complain about their purchases, they will often hide the things they buy. They are often in denial about the problem. Because they can not pay their bills their credit rating suffers, they have collection agencies attempting to get what is owed, may have legal, social and relationship problems. They sometimes attempt to hide their problem by taking on an extra job to pay for bills.

How do you control and treat this condition?
It is recommended that spending addicts seek professional counseling or a self-help group to deal with this problem. Addictive behaviors tend to come in clusters, so if you have an eating disorder, a problem with drugs or alcohol, or gambling, you may be a candidate for shopping addiction. Many communities have credit counseling centers that will also help with shopoholism.

How do I prevent shopping binges?

* Pay for purchases by cash, check, debit card.
* Make a shopping list and only buy what is on the list.
* Destroy all credit cards except one to be used for emergency only.
* Avoid discount warehouses. Allocate only a certain amount of cash to be spent if you do visit one.
* "Window shop" only after stores have closed. If you do "look" during the day, leave your wallet at home.
* Avoid phoning in catalog orders and don't watch TV shopping channels.
* If you're traveling to visit friends or reltives, have your gifts wrapped and call the project finished; people tend to make more extraneous purchases when they shop outside their own communities.
* Take a walk or exercise when the urge to shop comes on.
* If you feel out of control, you probably are. Seek counseling or a support group such as Debtors Anonymous.

Likely 75+% of the Browncoats who post here. For the record, I did not. But I do not think anything would be any better if John McCain was Prez. In fact, things could likely be much worse.

It's not really fair to blame the many messes that exist now on Obama. Bush didn't exactly leave with things under control. Reid & Pelosi have conducted themselves in a most depicable way. Instead of rising up to Obama's vision of open Govt., transparency, elimination of wasteful pork, and fiscal restraint, they have plowed full steam ahead with expensive radical agendas that most Americans clearly don't want. They've taken our debt to record levels, around $13 Trillion, and they are still hell-bent on more Govt spending. Their bribery of Senators using tax dollars to get their vote on issues is a vile example of the culture of corruption that Obama never wanted. Whatever happened to Pelosi's "draining of the swamp?" Christ...she is the fucking SWAMP! So Obama is being dragged down the tubes by those two clowns, and I also feel his inner circle has surrounded Obama with un-qualified ideologues who continue to embarrass Obama at every turn. Gibbs, Geithner, Napalitano, etc etc....where'd they ever dig up these tax cheats and retards from? Obama is smart, everyone says that, right? How long is he going to tolerate blind ideology that is sending moderates and independents running to Tea Parties and the GOP? I think he is going to re-group, ask for lots of resignations, and start fresh in a few weeks. The Dems are in free-fall of chaos and public condemnation. But Republicans have no money, no leadership, and plenty of ugly baggage of their own. I love the pundits on TV predicting GOP victories in November. Ha! I'll believe it when I see it.

Jongsie, you and I agree on just about nothing in this crazy old world, but when you're right, you're right. I have to agree with just about everything you just said.

There's never been a better time to push for the Democrats to oust Harry Reid, and I hope it happens. (But I've got my own nefarious reasons for hoping so.)

Thanks Kwik. I tried all last year to be fair with Obama. I often find myself defending him to others...how weird is that? Ideology aside, I just like the guy. I believe he can make a big comeback if he acts decisively and quickly. I really do not want the first Black Prez to fail.

I just can't see how he can address the economic issues unless he cuts spending somewhere

Defense Spending has been out of control for so long it is an establishment unto itself. Untangling the US from dubious foreign commitments ( like Columbia ) and closing down some foreign bases the host country doesn't want ( like Japan ) could be great places to start.

Healthcare... with no public option I have trouble seeing where all the consultation and townhalls were worth having. Either do it right, or you are tossing money away here as well, because in another 5 or 10 years this debate will need to be done again.

Foreign Aid, not legit disaster aid like Haiti, but money paid to countries like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Israel, etc.

Some decisive action here could save Billions

I'd amend that, and say that I really don't want ANY American President to fail.

You're defending Obama, and I'm rapidly losing any faith in him, and the tentacles of The Machine wrap themselves ever tighter around him and pull him under. I think he HAD a chance to make sweeping changes for the better, and he listened to the wrong people who are pushing the wrong agenda, and he became just another corrupt politician.

I'd love to be proved wrong on that.

Interestingly, I saw some graphs last night. One was unemployment under Bush at the end and Obama since. It went straight up under Bush, peaked, and then has gone steadily down since Obama took office. It's still real bad, but the graph was educational.

The other was the DOW, and it was exactly the same...it went dramatically down under Bush, and has been steadily (albeit verrrry slowly) going back up under Obama. The only way I can find it is on the Maddow show itself, and it's about a quarter of the way in on the video, but check it out for yourself: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/#34833567

It also goes on to talk about other things Obama has done, but that's up to you if you want to follow; the point I'm addressing is the "Bikini" graphs, as they call them. The other things are pretty iluminating, too, in my opinion. I think it's pretty telling for a Prez who can come in under the weight of the mess Dumbya left us with.

Beyond that, yes, I'm getting pissed off too.

Don't count him out. It's understandable that you'd be feeling this way due to the incredibly high hopes and expectations that he brought with his election. I said "Black Prez" because it is significant that he is that. That's what the media has banged into our heads, everything with him being all historic and such. Others before have tried to challenge & change DC, but none have. It is what it is, it seems. He needs new people in the Cabinet, and he needs new Congressional leadership. He needs to throw away the teleprompter speeches, and get back to communicating to people in an honest way, like he did on the campaign trail. Only the most twisted and hard-core ideologues (like Rush) are rooting for his failure. American citizens are not. He has 3 more years at least. Let's give him another year to see if he is indeed so smart.

It's been one year, could he just quit screwing around and do something above average? Doesn't have to be great, just something that doesn't smack of "I'm in over my head... I have no real power... I do what they let me do."

I have no idea how to read economic graphs. Is this lost jobs per month? So the total amount of lost jobs is still increasing.

I found this too.

http://www.cnbc.com/id/34857820

I'm hearing some optimism, though, that the slowing rate of job loss may be indicating a turn around soon. Mostly from the administration, so I guess we'll believe that when we see it.

Budget cuts would be nice though, if/when we get on stable ground.

There is this document called the United States Constitution. If you read it, and study it some, the way California Public Schools made me do 3 times, it emphasizes that the Founding Fathers left the real power in the hands of Congress and even more so in the hands of the State Legislatures.
Seems they had just fought a war against one man rule by a fella known as King George III of England, so they had a considerable distrust of giving any one guy enough power to just wave his arms and say, "Make it so." The President was conceived as an Executive who would Execute the Will of Congress. Over 200 + years, some of the balance has shifted a little, especially away from the States, but the Pres still is not Elected King for 4 years. There are still checks and balances, that's how it works. Except as Commander in Chief, and Spokesman from the Bully Pulpit, the President doesn't automatically get his own way. He may pretend that he does-- certain party politicians may believe that he does, but unless Congress can be motivated or scared into going along, 'taint so.

Yup, Byte, for all my searching, you found it! If anyone wants to listen to the video, after the "bikini graphs" as they're calling them, she goes on to describe some of the things he HAS accomplished.

You know, I didn't have the high expectations we are so credited with having...mostly I had hope, and breathed a sigh of relief that more horrid things wouldn't be happening. Given the obstacles, I'm not willing to trash the guy, and I still have hope.

And thank you muchly Newold, that's a point I keep trying to make but which seemd to be ignore by some in blaming Obama for not accomplishing more.

The main problem, if you want to look it in the eye, is that the Dems "big tent" netted some people who aren't really Democrats, which makes getting Dems to agree like "herding cats", as the saying goes. I'm firmly convinced that if Dumbya had wanted to do the things Obama does and had 60 seats, the Repubs would have lined up wagging their tails and accomplished virtually everything.

Obama is hampered by the money of various lobbies having bought and paid for some Dems, with Senators being quite happy to forget the good of the people in order to blackmail favors to vote this way or that, and with the Repubs being fanatically determined to be the Party of No.

It's something to keep in mind when people go to blame Obama: just how much power he DOESN'T have. Yes, I'm still pissed, but I'm not willing to give up. If next year brings less than a 60-seat majority, he's pretty screwed in getting much accomplished, 'cuz the fact is Congress DOES have the majorty of the power.

Which means we can pretty well blame Dumbya for everything HE did, because Congress (including some Dems) trotted along happily, but we can't blame Obama for not accomplishing what he wants, because the Repubs won't give a single vote to about anything. THAT's the truth.

Mind you, some of the things he's been able to do as Prez without Congress, I don't agree with, either, but the blame for the big things that haven't happen which are in their power can be laid at the feet of Congress...which means the Republicans and some so-called "moderate" Dems in the Senate, period.

Sorry Niki but those sound like excuses, like the truth might be too painful so let's just look at things a little sideways.

I voted for him, I had/have high expectations, but Afghanistan and health care have left me totally, utterly disappointed. Those should have been where he EXCELLED! It's like 9 years of George Bush.

No, it's not HIS Congress. It belongs to the Congressmen. It does have a Democrat majority, but the Demo party ain't never been real strong on party unity-- ( unlike another American political organization.)-- it's a coalition, an Alliance, if you will, of differing groups with different points of view and different objectives, some in direct opposition to others. Just like there are RINO Republicans, there are a LOT of DINO Democrats. And he ain't even the Party Chairman-- nor leader of ANY Congressional party group.
Not to say he hasn't been disappointing, and that sometimes his leadership has been limited to making impressive speeches, but no President is John-Luc Piccard.

Nope, Piz, there's no "excuse" about it. It's just a fact, as Newold says below; Presidential power only goes so far, that's a simple fact. In things such as healthcare reform, energy reform and many of the things that make the news, Congress has the power, lobbiests have power over Congress, the President doesn't. Period. There's only so much he can do.

As I said, I make NO excuses for a number of the things he's done over which he DOES have power, but I refuse to blame him for everything, carte blanche. I will judge him on all three realities:

The power of the Prez v. the power of Congress;
The mess Bush left us in;
What he's able to do with his own power.

So far, coming up short. But shared blame. That's no excuse.

I give Obama all the credit in the world for that. TARP 1 & 2 helped out the banks and insurers. All the rest of the outrageous spending came after:
Stimulus
Omnibus
Auto Cos. bailout
AMA buyoff
Pharma buyoff
Senator's vote buyoff
proposed Stimulus 2
proposed Cap & Tax
proposed mandatory h/c

Americans are at the brink now. So's the debt. No mas!
