There's a really good article about how BP is "cleaning up" (insert laugh) the oil spill, written from the first person, at http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-457639?hpt=Sbin are the people BP has hired to oversee and maintain this boom? Where are the people they hired because, as far as I could see in every direction, there were at most five boats in the entire bay. No one was working on boom so this island was going to remain unprotected the entire night with black oil already floating near the outer boom.

One resident told me he quit watching TV because of the Tony Hayward commercials. Every time he saw one he wanted to smash or throw something at the TV.

There doesn’t seem to be a strong chain of command overseeing and holding Tony Hayward accountable when it comes to the day to day clean-up. Someone should have reported the boom and it should have been changed and properly placed around the island. This is an example of how unprepared BP will be when the tides change and bring the oil back in, which is already happening. But why am I surprised? They haven’t been prepared for anything for 51 days now.

So… either Tony Hayward is a sociopathic liar and could care less about the people of the Gulf Coast, or he has deceived himself into believing people are out here working every day. I don’t know… You make the call. I am just reporting what I saw this day.
peace out America

The article is heartbreaking to read, so I only uploaded the above excerpt. Read more if you want. I wish to hell I could get down there NOW, but it would be useless without the backing of some organization or another. I'd like to strangle Hayward, but I know they've shoved him out there to be the fall guy, so I guess I'd rather take a to BP headquarters, instead.

Why can't our government take over? Yeah, they're not doing enough either, but BP is just plain faking it, and it should be possible to take over from them and then bill them later or something.

And why aren't we being allowed to help? I haven't heard back from a single organization, and I assume there are millions of us out here who want to lend a hand. Probably won't do any good, but I sent an iReport to CNN on the question:
Quote:

Why aren't we being allowed to help? America watches helplessly from outside and wants to lend a hand, yet here we sit, doing nothing but reading about the horrors.

A group of people who know my background took up a collection and came up with enough for my air trip and accommodations. I have background in both beach clean-up and oiled bird clean-up. I have registered with numerous organizations, yet heard back from none of them.

There are I have no doubt millions of other who desperately want to lend a hand. Many of us can pay our own way and would be no burden on anyone, just an extra pair of hands to do whatever job needs doing. I don't care if I'm doing laundry or cleaning cages--they need help!

The time to look to our government or BP to deal with this has passed. Most likely it won't be until the relief wells are drilled that the oil will stop flowing--if then. In the meantime, oil is drifting into our country, destroying everything in its wake, and the American people who want to help aren't being called upon.

BP lies through its teeth about everything...they have been since day one and they continue to be to this day. We can't look to them, it's obvious. They have no personal stake in this, all they want is to look good on camera and wait it out, knowing in a few years they'll be off the hook, just as Exxon is: a company now making more money than most of us can conceive, while 20 years afterward, Prince William Sound still suffers.

The government is not much better. We hear Obama talking about how many booms have been sent down to the Gulf--but the booms aren't being maintained, and are doing more harm than good in many places. How many hands are out here, willing to get in and re-anchor all those booms floating free, surrounding places like Queen Bess Island and trapping the oil inside the boom of an island which harbors the endangered Pelicans, their nests and offspring? How much training would it take to let people get out there and re-anchor those booms? They're not perfect, but they're not nothing.

The berm project has been approved. We could be out there with shovels, helping to build it, but we're not being called up. We could be cleaning beaches alongside those who live in the Gulf. We could be doing so much that the government and BP are not.

I read an iReport today from a person who had walked the beaches, saw nobody at work cleaning up, who had been taken around by boat and seen the horror, been told by a boat captain that 'I won't cry with you"--because many of them are cried out at this point. They've lost their livelihood, they've lost their land and vital wetlands, and they wait as helplessly as we do for some kind of action.

I've been saving my dogs' and rabbits' hair to send after reading how they can make booms out of both. Now I read that the Coast Guard won't use them, yet people are still sending fur and hair in the hopes they can do something to help.

They're trying to keep the media away, they're putting a good face on what's happening, but we know better--the news gets through; we see it every day, we read it all the time, in newspapers, on the internet. And it's going to get far worse, it's going to continue for a long, long time. Whatever they're doing down there, it's not working, simple things are going wrong or not being done which extra hands could do.

Why not utilize the American people who recognize that BP and the government either don't care enough or aren't organized enough to get out there and do the job? There are many of us...just waiting.

Why aren't all these organizations--and I know there are many, I've registered with them--calling up volunteers?. Why isn't the government recruiting citizens who can get their on their own, take care of themselves, and lend a hand?

The American people can help. We want to help. These are our fellow citizens suffering, and wildlife and environment we treasure too. Why aren't we being allowed to help?

I don't understand why we're not being called up to help. Just going there is futile, you have to be part of some organization in order to have the "official okey-dokey" to work. So why are none calling us up?? I'm very frustrated.

I realize they may be keeping our info in abeyance for when those already there need replacements, but it's getting worse and will get even worse...how much training would it take to be out re-anchoring booms, or building the berm, or anything else? If nothing else, there obviously aren't enough people, or enough organization on the part of those "organizing" them, to get people out to do these things.

Sorry...just venting my frustration. I feel so helpless...

Madame Geezer and I were discussing this the other day. Seems there'd be plenty of folk willing to volunteer to go to the Gulf and do non-technical cleanup - shoveling tarballs off beaches and such that takes minimal instruction and skill, just willingness to work - and who would pay their own way. This'd not only get folks involved and get some of the work done, but provide a boost for the local economies as rooms and resturants empty of vacationers would be filled with workers. We couldn't figure why no one asks.

Damned straight. Every website I went to said they're looking for voluteers and provided a web page to sign up, yet I've never heard back from a single one. It's very frustrating, to say the least. I KNOW there are many, many people out there like me just sitting around to at least hear back--if they want to keep us in reserve for when they need replacements, fine, just TELL US!

Plus I feel the same as you...I hear about how the people BP supposedly paying to clean up the beaches aren't there, how nobody's cleaning up this or that beach, and we could EASILY be doing that stuff!

Grrrr....

Liability issues, is my bet. They're not willing to put people out there in the toxic stew if there's even the slightest chance that those people can come back later with health issues, claiming that they weren't adequately trained or protected, and since they weren't trained about the real dangers of this sludge, then any waivers they might have signed would be null and void.

It sucks, to be sure. But that's the litigious society we live in. Unless you're willing to sign a 100% ironclad waiver absolving BP and/or the federal, state, local, and city governments and all their agencies of ANY responsibilities, they aren't likely to take the chance.

Yeah, Mike...sigh...I had thought of that after I posted. You're probably right, and if sp , it SUX SUX SUX, dammit! What a society we live in...!

I'm not giving up, there has to be a way. They're ASKING for volunteers, on several websites, so eventually I'll get my chance, dammit.

Just frustrated. I know I said I was prepared to wait until they need replacements, but when I see what's happening, and I see and hear about things not being done, or not being done properly like those booms...it just makes me want to and and

Oh, well, sigh...off to watch some mindless TV...anything but news of the Gulf...
