So now it begins:

The Chicago, Illinois, City Council in a 45-0 vote approved a new gun ordinance Friday, four days after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the city's 28-year-old strict ban on handgun ownership was unconstitutional.

Among other details, the ordinance allows only one operable firearm per household, meaning all other guns would need to have gun locks or be in locked cases. It also requires owners to have a state firearms permit, to register weapons with Chicago police and to take four hours of classroom training and one hour of firing range training.

The plan also bans assault weapons and gun shops in the city.

The June 28 Supreme Court ruling overturned the city's previous handgun ban.

"Although the ruling wasn't what we had hoped for, it was what we expected," said Chicago Mayor Richard Daley. "That's why for the last several months we've been preparing the reasonable and responsible ordinance to regulate handguns in the home that the council approved today.

The fact that they chose to defy the spirit of the high courts decision is probably a good thing for gun owners in the long run. If they would have enacted reasonable restrictions it would have been much more difficult for the courts to find the new law to be effectively a ban on guns. I think this is exatly what the NRA hoped they would do.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

This new law definitely suggests that Chicago continues to disbelieve in the right of gun ownership for citizens, and wants to make it as difficult as possible.

1) No gun shops in the city - This indicates that the city is bizarrely hoping to inconvenience their citizens by making them travel distances to get firearms and ammo. There is no reasonable reason for this other than harassing them. "If we make it hard on them, maybe they won't bother to enjoy their constitutional rights?"

2) Ban on Assault Weapons - Whatever is an Assault Weapon? I'm afraid to imagine what definition Chicago has used here. Also, will law enforcement be exempted from this ban?

3) One Usable Firearm Per Household - I suppose only a husband or a wife is allowed to defend their house and family. The other must remain defenseless. There should be as many usable firearms per house allowed as there are adults, at least.

4) State Firearms Permit - I don't know what this is or what additional restrictions are imposed to obtain such a thing?

Here's one for the books, Kirk: I fully agree with you.

I'm not in favor of a total ban on guns, but I abhorred the Court being "activist" about things, and I felt this was a case of same. Nonetheless, I, too, believe more reasonable laws would not only have been more appropriate, but created less of a situation where their actions would have been necessitated.

It's the usual thing, the powers that be, federal, state or local, got this idea of how things oughta be - and when the rules get in the way of that, they got this habit of ignoring them, same old, same old...

Only this time you got two of THEM smackin heads with each OTHER over it instead of one of em smackin heads with us.

Get the popcorn.

Oh, and don't expect the police to have any respect for those rights either and especially, given Chicagos police are corrupt to a degree equalled only by New York, Los Angelos, Baltimore and Detroit... so expect shakedowns and harrassment galore.

Of course, we're workin the DPD over like a heavy bag, they're still reeling from the Liberty Massacre, and the USDOJ came down on the gang squad on top of it, which is gettin ugly in a real hurry since the gang squad not only racked up 10+ complaints a DAY, the DOJ's quiet investigation revealed that over 70% of those claims are fully justified...

That's over 2500 FELONY CRIMES, a year, COMMITTED *BY* one small section of the police force, a section that just got it's ass handed to it by being cut hard, forty pinkslips worth of hard, and having all their special privledges revoked - Evans put em back in uniform too, instead of plainclothes, WITH visible badge numbers.

Anyhows, this is gonna take a year or two, and a fuckton of lawsuits to push Chicago into ever accepting that people gotta right, and even then expect a decade more of petty harrassment of gun owners by the CPD.

Anthony: "Assault Weapons" are typically any semi-automatic rifle or carbine that is (a) black in color, and (b) disliked by the media, which usually (erroneously) calls them "machineguns". :)
