An overwhelming majority of the tests were nothing more than pissing contests, intended to intimidate the Rooskies with the size of our missiles. And they did a lot of it as well.

I have to stop and think. That's really a good point. There's no need to test a new nuke, you know how the device works, and it's damn costly. 1000 nukes must've cost us a fortune. Plus, extra fallout over the USA...

I've heard these other arguments and they don't hold water for me. I'm going to toss one out there:

Maybe they were testing something else? Maybe nuclear shielding, like "can this airplane survive a trip through a mushroom cloud? How will it affect this military base?

Tsar Bomba, with a yield of 57 megatons, was set off in 1961. It was the only one built of its kind. The U.S. had the Mk.41, with a speculative yield of 25mt.

Then it's not accurate. Certainly the missile fields throughout the midwest (they ranged from North Dakota down through Texas) would be Priority One targets, along with several of the NASA/DoD weapons sites in Georgia, Alabama, Tennesee, and Texas.

Now, as far as a deterrent, I think it was a brilliant idea that was poorly executed.

The proper delivery system (not explored by the Russians) was the submarine. Not a missile. Not a plane. Just a submarine sitting somewhere off the coast. Waiting. You get the order, and you don't even have to launch. You just say a prayer and turn it on.

Heck, you don't even need the actual bomb on board. Just so long as everyone thinks (including your own men) that all your subs are carrying one, that's enough.

And yes, the SLAM is one of the most batshit things I'd ever heard of. I'd quibble with the "missile silos in the desert" thing, though. I've been to the Great Plains; I've lived there. Lots and lots and lots and lots of farmland, but no real desert there. These things were deployed all across North and South Dakota, Missouri, Montana, Wyoming, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado... the very heart of the country, the places where most of our food and meat come from.
