Keep the Shiny side up

Interesting that coldest winters do not disprove climate change, but warmest months do prove climate change.

As to Climategate, most of the news relating to it that I was was not about falsifying data, but about climate change supporters planning to stonewall their opponents by refusing to peer-review their papers and keeping them from being published. We discussed this here earlier this year.

Climate change isn't about Winter or Summer, it's about EXTREMES, or hadn't you heard that?

The ACTUAL joke is that climate-change deniers DID try to use the extreme Winters to say "Global warming, eh? How about THIS?!" when the extreme Winter temperatures DO relate to climate change.

And no, I'm not going to debate you, just offering information. I understand wlimate change is impossible to debate with deniers.

Actualy, We've had Vinyards in England for some time (you dont "grow Wine" Rapty, or have'nt you heard). The climate is merely tilting back to the way it was a thousand or so years ago.
That's about 750 years before the U.S. started having a "History".

Yes. Wine is made from grapes that are grown.

But the climate is doing what it normally does....going about its own business, and no legislation or energy bill will change that fact, one iota.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

Based on the Medieval Warm Period and the Little Ice Age, I observe that the world warms and cools at intervals.

I don't doubt that our transformation of the world into a suitable human habitat has an effect on climate, but I suspect it's rather like pushing a cart as it rolls downhill.

I advocate alternative, renewable, and clean energy for reasons that have everything to do with freedom and finance and good health, and nothing to do with the temperature of the planet.

I think more people should argue for change based on the immediately provable benefits of alternative, renewable, clean resources and conservation.

Whether or not global warming exists or is helped or caused by man has nothing to do with my desire to save woodlands or install solar panels on my roof.

Well, you're wrong. People are having an effect on the climate, just like we're having an effect on topsoil, on ocean pH and temperature, etc.

Deniers will continue to deny even in the face of data, but the data is there, and in time will be undeniable.

Think she misread you, Anthony.

There are a number of things that are pretty serious, and human caused.

Global warming I think is human caused and measurable within the past few decades, but historically speaking based on paleoclimate geology data, not necessarily a doomsday scenario. I think people are discrediting themselves by sensationalizing the science, most likely for political reasons (on both sides).

I think the biggest concerns associated with it will be stronger storms and potential agricultural damages due to drought. If ice is melting at the poles, it's a 20 meter rise, but it's also not going to happen all at once. Ocean thermal expansion is perhaps a bigger concern than pole melt, but that also isn't immediate.

Though I do think, on people's own time, it's probably smart in general to start switching over to sustainable, efficient, and self-sufficient technology.

Honestly, folks, talking with Rappy about this stuff is like arguing with Sarah Palin about Jesus walking with dinosaurs. Rappy's a Flat Earther, a New Earth Creationist when it comes to climate change. He actually BELIEVES Greenland was named Greenland because it was green, and doesn't get that the ice cap covering more than 80% of Greenland is hundreds of thousands of years old. That's right; the ice cap covering Greenland predates by hundreds of thousands of years the naming of Greenland. In similar shocking news, it's been discovered that New Mexico isn't really all that new.

As for "growing" wine, that's at least as dumb a statement as anything ever uttered by Sheila Jackson Lee... I hear they grow a lot of nice furniture up in the Pennsylvania Dutch Country, too. ;)

Yes, you did Anthony, and my reasons are the same as yours for wanting renewable energy. I'm on the fence about climate change being caused by humans, leaning more toward believing it is but not convinced. Given we have polluted the land, air, water and just about everything else, it's certainly possible, to me. Given we're managing to change the OCEAN, the biggest part of our little blue marble, I think our effects might well affect anything.

Either way, we're screwing this place up, have been since the dawn of man, and I don't see that changing in my lifetime, if ever.

Eh, Mike, growing wine is a misstatement, nothing more, and an unsurprising one, anyone could make that mistake. "Produce wine", "grow grapes", whatever...

But yeah, I got a kick out of it when I was a kid and a teacher said "Greenland is actually covered with ice; Iceland is actually green". I forget where the names came from; betcha one of our more educated folk will come up with it.

Oh, Greenland WAS green. It was just a few million years ago. And nobody was around to name it "Greenland" then. You don't seem to get that, because you really are just that ignorant. When Greenland was named GREENLAND, it wasn't green. It was more than 80% covered with an ice cap. You're the only one here who's dumb enough to dispute that.

Well, it kinda DOES matter if someone was around to name it, if your original point was that it was called Greenland because it was GREEN. Nobody called it that when it was green, and when it was named that, it wasn't green.

And MY point was that Greenland was never CALLED Greenland because it was green, and it was never green during the time it was CALLED Greenland. You're too stupid to figure that out. It's not that Greenland will "BE green again" - it's that Greenland will finally BE green, for the first time in recorded history.

Greenland has never been a green and temperate land in any of the time it has been called "Greenland". To say that "Greenland will be green again" is a false statement, since "GREENLAND" has never been green in any of the time it's been named GREENLAND. You can say that "Greenland will *finally* be green, and live up to the name it was falsely given all those years ago."

No, Greenland was NOT EVER green in recorded history.
Quote:

. The name Greenland comes from the early Scandinavian settlers. In the Icelandic sagas, it is said that Norwegian-born Erik the Red was exiled from Iceland for murder. He, along with his extended family and thralls, set out in ships to find a land rumoured to lie to the northwest. After settling there, he named the land Grœnland ("Greenland"), supposedly in the hope that the pleasant name would attract settlers.
It was called "greenland" as a form of advertising... false advertising, I might add. The Inuit who lived in "greenland" were whale and seal hunters, not farmers. Only the Norse attempted farming, and even then only in two settlements along the southern coast.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Greenland was also called Gruntland ("Ground-land") and Engronelant (or Engroneland) on early maps. Whether green is an erroneous transcription of grunt ("ground"), which refers to shallow bays, or vice versa, is not known. The southern portion of Greenland (not covered by glaciers) is green in the summer.

RAPPY, RALPH: The island that was (and still is) called Greenland has been for the most part covered by glaciers for hundreds of thousands of years. A SMALL part in the south is green for three months. Deniers say
Quote:

Maybe Greenland will actually be ... GREEN again ?
The implication is clear that they (Rappy) believe that Greenland was once green, and therefore to see the glaciers melt is all within "normal variation".

THWACK!

Sit up and pay attention, boys! What science says is
Quote:

The Greenland ice sheet has existed for at least 400,000 years.
"Greenland" has not been green for a long, long time. A glacier has covered 80% of "Greenland" since before the last ice age. Since before humans even existed.

Now if you have to reach back THAT far to find a comparable event; and the current event has come about very suddenly and not in an expected sequence, it would take a massive case of denial not to consider the fact that maybe man had something to do with precipitating the event.

FWIW Eric the Red is reputed to have settled Greenland after being exiled. Further he is also said to have named it GREENland in probably the biggest real-estate sales-pitch/ con-job ever.

But just as ICEland is not covered in ice (ironically it has less ice cover than GREENland), and Paradise, CA is not actually, well, PARADISE, GREENland is not very green, and hasn't been substantially green for a few hundred thousand years.

But having read that whole thread about why facts don't matter, I'm guessing that Auraptor, who appears to be of conservative bent, will hew even more closely to his fantasies for all the facts put in front of him. Which makes arguing with him worse than useless. I intend to treat him like he isn't here.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Ironically, I'm on the other side. To say "maybe Greenland will be green again" is merely a statement that something named "Greenland" may be gree again--as it was before man came along. It's a joke, it doesn't mean it was CALLED Greenland because it was green--which it obviously wasn't.

Ergo, the fact is: At one time, Greenland was green. To say "maybe it'll be green again" has nothing to do with who named it, when, or whether it was mostly ice at the time it was named. It's a play on words, nothing more.

It's interesting to see this go back and forth without that being recognized. The statement wasn't "Maybe Greenland will be green again, as it was when they called it that". It was green ONCE, maybe it will be again" is the joke. And it's valid.

It's more valid than "Paradise, CA, isn't paradise", because it never WAS paradise. Get it?

I hate that I have to agree...but coming into it long after the discussion, it's obvious to me. Dammit.

August is the hottest month of the year, and I just threw my AC away for mold infestation.

No AC and it feels GREAT! House feels like it's still ACed.

Fans are much more hygenic.
