Tuesday's runoff for Georgia's Republican governor's nomination isn't just Nathan Deal vs. Karen Handel -- it's also Newt Gingrich and Mike Huckabee vs. Sarah Palin and Mitt Romney.

Handel, Georgia's former secretary of state, was endorsed by Palin before the July 20 primary against former U.S. Rep. Nathan Deal, who is supported by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Arkansas governor and current TV talk show host Mike Huckabee.

Deal resigned his House seat to run for governor. Incumbent GOP Gov. Sonny Perdue is prohibited from running for a third consecutive term.

The winner will face former Gov. Roy Barnes, who lost to Perdue in 2002, and who easily won the Democratic primary.

Nathan Gonzales, political editor of the nonpartisan Rothenberg Political Report, said that the endorsements by GOP heavyweights, like Palin and Gingrich, are likely part of an effort to also lobby to be seen as the face of the Republican Party.

"The more people you help get elected, the larger influence you will have within a party," he said. "I think that's part of the reason why you see Palin endorsing candidates; [Sen. Jim] DeMint endorsing; Mitt Romney and [Minnesota Gov.] Tim Pawlenty contributing to and endorsing candidates."

Handel vaulted into the lead in polls after Palin endorsed her just before the July primary and captured 34 percent of the vote while Deal finished second with 23 percent. Since neither won 50 percent, the two were forced into Tuesday's runoff.

After the primary, former Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney also endorsed Handel.

On Monday, Palin stumped in Atlanta, Georgia, for Handel, telling the crowd that it's time to end the "good ole boy network that really gets in the way of just doing the things that the people who want to hire a good governor are expecting from their government."

You betcha!

Does that last sentence make sense to you? Seems strange to me...

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I think it's like saying that poor people want work, or thirsty people want water, or any of the other things politicians say. In this case, citizens want governments that represent them. The rule of thumb is to say something that will get your audience thinking 'yes' as much as possible, and agreeing with you. It's the same technique for salesmen.

"Don't you hate it when X breaks down on you?" "Yes, I do." "Don't you wish you could have a more reliable Y?" "Yes, I do." "It's so hard to afford a Z in this economic climate, though." "Yes, it is." "But if I could show you a way you could have a Z, within your budget, and with a guarantee that it'll work reliably, wouldn't you want it?" "Yes, I would!" "Well, let me show you the new model X-2000 right over here..."

Obama did the same sorts of things using more intellectual language. They all do.

Hello,

LOL! Love the picture.

I had the grave misfortune of working for Radio Shack when I was in High School. It was my very first job, and the only job I had in the years before I got hired by the Police Department. Their philosophy was that if a customer came in to buy a resistor or fuse, you should be able to sell them a new appliance. Their training videos still ring in the back of my brain.

"Get the customer to say Yes, Yes to anything, and soon they'll say Yes to what you're selling. Just get them in the Yes mood. Yes, Yes, Yes, all the way to the checkout line."

I still remember the moment when I realized the correlation between politics and sales. I felt suddenly dirty. I still feel like my brain is left with an oily residue whenever I hear a political speech. I think that's one of the reasons Ron Paul appealed to me. He was a HORRIBLE public speaker.

God Bless the old man. He just said stuff he believed in, without much pizzazz. Like me, he'd have been a terrible salesman. Probably a better dispatcher than I was, though.

Maybe you just weren't selling the cops on responding to the calls! Gotta get them to "Yes!" before you can get them to the scene!

Actually around here that screwhead DeVos is "supporting" certain Democrat candidates cause he KNOWS how bitterly Michigan hates him (and his wife, and Blackwater, and all the other scummy crap they're into..) and trying to sabotage their campaigns that way - while Sarah isn't bright enough to try that stunt, dumb as she is, she prolly really thinks it'd help em, her handlers surely are.

Man, given just how much the GOP seems to be deliberately trying to piss off the population, I am startin to wonder if investing in some asphalt companies (for the tar) and pillow manufacturers (for the feathers) might be a worthwhile thing to do.
