I posted this elsewhere, but I think it is deserving of it's own thread. Many of us hold mistaken beliefs about the Islamic religion, so I'd like to offer just a few actual facts about it. It would be wonderful if those of you who believe otherwise would take the time to read this.

"Islam" means literally "submission to God."

It is
Quote:

a monotheistic faith and the world's second-largest religion. Followers of Islam, known as Muslims, believe that God (or, in Arabic, Allāh) revealed His Will to Muhammad (c. 570–632) and other prophets, including Adam, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. However, that which was revealed to Muhammad was considered to be the final and ultimate revelation, and corrective of Jewish and Christian traditions.

In Arabic, Islām means "submission" and is described as a Dīn, meaning "way of life" and/or "religion." Etymologically, it is derived from the same root as, for example, Salām meaning "peace" (also a common salutation). The word Muslim is also related to the word Islām and means "one who surrenders" or "submits" to God, or a "vassal" of God.

Muslims hold that it is essentially the same belief as that of all the messengers sent by God to mankind since Adam, with the Qur'ān (the one definitive text of the Muslim faith) codifying the final revelation of God. Islam sees Judaism and Christianity as derivations of the teachings of certain of these prophets - notably Abraham - and therefore see them as fellow Abrahamic religions, and People of the Book. Unlike Christianity, Islam has not undergone any period of reformation; however, that is essentially the goal of various liberal movements within Islam. Islam has two primary branches of belief, based largely on a historical disagreement over the succession of authority after Muhammad's death; these are known as Sunnite and Shi'ite.

The basis of Muslim belief is found in the shahādatan ("two statements"): lā ilāhā illā-llāhu; muhammadur-rasūlu-llāhi — "There is no god but God; Muhammad is the messenger of God." One needs to recite and believe these statements in order to become a Muslim. All Muslims agree to this, although Sunnis further regard this as one of the five pillars of Islam.

The Muslim creed, and one of their prayers, is
Quote:

I believe in God; and in His Angels; and in His Scriptures; and in His Messengers; and in The Final Day; and in Fate, that Good and Evil are from God, and Resurrection after death be Truth. I testify that there is nothing worthy of worship but God; and I testify that Muhammad is His Messenger.
How different is that from the devote Christian believes, and in sometimes prays?

The more we learn about the REALITIES of things, the more we try to educate ourselves about things upon which we are ignorant, the better people we become. As long as we give in to ignorance and a desire NOT to understand others, we are the worse for it.

And if you try to say yes, that's how it began, but now it's been taken over by extremists, you can't deny that Christianity has lately been taken over by extremists...INCLUDING THOSE WHO KILLED FOR THEIR BELIEFS. Which is NOT to equate terrorists with anything or anyONE other than other terrorists. Just to say it's wrong to equate terrorists with all Muslims or the Islamic faith.

ANTHONYT

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I think all religions benefit when religious interpreters/leaders/teachers are prepared to focus on the positive aspects of a religion and leave the murder/death/kill shit behind.

There are such wise leaders in every religion, including Islam. There are also those who relish the parts about Hellfire and Killing unbelievers, etc. Winding people up with fear and hatred and pointing them in a desired direction of destruction.

It all depends on the agenda of the teacher. Both the wise and the unwise use the same texts.

Yes, it's a truly sad human failing, isn't it?

EVERY religion, as well as buddhism (which is actually a philosophy and not a religion) teaches tolerance and love. Within every organized "religion", there are those who utilize the texts and twist them to their own advantage.

Fear is a great motivator; it is also a great way to get people to ignore their better nature and give in to their baser one. as well as a way to get them to subjugate themselves to those the view as "preaching" the tenants of the religion.

To me, over time and by observation, it has always seemed that those in "authority" within every organized religion utilized their ability to twist and misinterpret the tenants of their religion in order to solidify and/or increase their power over those who look up to them. That's one of the main reasons I abhor organized religion. It puts too much power in the hands of fallible and/or power-hungry humans to interpret and use.

Every religion teaches peace, love and tolerance. The fact that there are MANY of those in power within those religions who turn that to violence, hate and intolerance speaks to those people, not to the religion itself or what it was created to foster. It's a shame, but as I say too often, we're "a strange little species".

I'm a Christian and I testify that Muhammad was not His Messenger. Personally I think he was just a poor fella with a lot of time on his hands and who really disliked Jews and women.

Islam essentially says 'Jews and Christians are wrong, here's our book instead and if you don't like it...JIHAD!' There's also a chapter on blowing yourself up in the name of good sex.

Christianity is all 'take it or leave it' about faith. Either you believe in Christ and the salvation of your soul, or you don't and your screwed.

Jews...I admit I don't know the details beyond lots of begating and no pork and the funny hat. I kinda just view them as Christians minus the Christ part...'Ians I guess. And I'm pretty sure they all arrived on the Battlestar Galactica...
