I can think of other reasons;

Abums too expensive

Few artists to get excited about

No huge hit singles

MTV, VH1 and FUSE not showing enough videos to get people interested in songs, singers or groups

I'm buying mostly singles from iTunes and Amazon. Usually the whole album isn't worth it.

DRM, RIAA, Lawsuits, general jackassery.

Treat your customers as the enemy, and it becomes self-fulfilling prophecy, not to mention music itself has declined cause of the stranglehold we've placed on creativity itself by bashing it out via force and drugs in childhood.

Not to mention insanity like this.

That's the "music industry" in a nutshell, insanity as policy.
