According to Miss Sher, who is Jewish, another passenger told her to shut up and then said: "There are too many Jews on board."

In an interview with the New York Post she admitted swearing at the person and declaring "How dare you insult me!" before storming off to her room.

She said the following morning the captain came to the room and told the couple, who live in Manhattan, that they had insulted another passenger and would have to leave the ship.

The cruise line said it "fully supported" the captain's decision and was refunding the couple $839 (£530) [of their $40,000 tickets].
